1 The St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference in Wausau, comprised of 20 active and 40 associate volunteer members from the parishes of St. Michael, Resurrection, Holy Name, St. Anne, and St. Mary's in Marathon, will receive the "In my Name Award" in February from Catholic Charities for the work they have done helping the poor and suffering in the Wausau area. Ken Tokarz SVdP President According to Ken Tokarz, a member of St. Michael Parish and President of St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference in Wausau, "The group is exceptionally pleased to be a recipient of the honor. Last year we provided roughly $34,000 in emergency services to the poor in the area. This money comes from the generous donation of our parishioners, fund raisers conducted by our conference, and grants from local foundations, including the BA and Esther Greenheck Foundation, The Dudley Foundation, and the Thomas A. Jacobs Foundation." St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference in Wausau is part of a worldwide Catholic organization with over 600,000 active members in 132 countries. According to Tokarz, "We may be more commonly known for our stores, but our primary purpose is person-to-person service to the poor and suffering as well as the spiritual growth of our members." He added that in the Wausau area they work mainly with Catholic Charities and the United Way 211 Help Line to ease the needs of those requesting help. "St. Vincent depaul provides temporary emergency assistance along with a human connection and spiritual support to those who, in many cases, have exhausted all other resources," Tokarz said. "Our unique contribution, in addition to the financial assistance, is the one-to-one connection we make with those in need. When we receive a call for help, we schedule a home visit. Through the home visit process, we assess their situation, provide referral information, and give them the encouragement and moral support to get their lives back on track." Since May, 2008, St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference has served over 700 individuals and households in the Wausau area, Tokarz said. St. Vincent depaul is in the process of choosing where to operate their store. "We will attempt to choose a location that it is on the bus line, has plenty of parking, and is generally a clean looking facility." "The store is a proven path to acquiring the funding that we need to grow our ministry in the Wausau area, as well as provide clothing and household goods to those who cannot afford them," Tokarz said. "Finally, the store will give Catholics a visible means of contributing themselves to the important work of charity that we are called to do." Both of these events are a part of the Year of Faith series sponsored by our deanery. Catholicism Series Fr. We will cover a variety of topics including The Mystery of God and The Eucharist. Please join us the evenings of February 28, March 7 and March 12 at 6:30 pm in the Gathering Space of St. Michael s to explore these areas of our Church's teaching. Refreshments will be provided. 4 4 HEART WORKS CELEBRATING THE EASTSIDE PARISHES STEWARD OF THE PARISHES - JEAN SAHR, SACRISTAN While attending Mass at either Church of the Resurrection or St. Michael Parish, have you ever asked yourself who takes care of the plants, decorates the altar, or prepares the church for each and every Mass? Jean Sahr Sacristan These jobs and numerous others at both churches are attended to by Jean Sahr, the sacristan for the Eastside Parishes and life-long member of Church of St. Michael. According to Sahr, "The role of a sacristan is doing everything that is needed to prepare the Church for a Mass." Some additional jobs of the sacristan include setting out the vessels and books for the priest, deacon, and readers; making sure there are candles, wine, and hosts ready for each Mass; getting the priest's vestments ready for Mass. Sahr completes these jobs at both churches every Saturday and Sunday and on weekdays, holy days, and for funerals and weddings. "I do the same thing anytime there is a Mass scheduled because the church must be ready," she said. A typical week for Sahr begins on Sunday when she goes to Resurrection about 7:00 am to prepare the church for the 8:00 am Mass. Then she goes to St. Michael's for the 8:30 am Mass, then back to Resurrection for the 10:00 am Mass, and then back to St. Michael's for the 10:30 am Mass. She is done around noon. On weekdays she prepares whichever Church will be having Mass and on Saturday Sahr begins to prepare both churches for the weekend Masses. "It is a big help for me having Deacon Peter Burek at Church of the Resurrection because he helps me out with the jobs that need to be done," she said. Sahr said the number of hours worked at the two churches is "unknown." She has been working as a sacristan at St. Michael's for about 20 years and at Church of the Resurrection for several years. "Father Bill asked me to be the sacristan, and the rest of my job just evolved," she said. In addition to her work as a sacristan, Sahr is employed for 30 hours a week at Blossoms and Bows. She is also chair of the Environment Committee and a member of the Sacred Worship Committee. As chair of the Environment Committee, Sahr and the committees she heads at each parish are respons ible for decorating the churches for the major liturgical seasons. "It's a good feeling when the church looks festive for holidays, everything goes smoothly, and the Liturgy is enhanced for the parish community," she said. "I enjoy decorating both Church of the Resurrection and St. Michael's because they are both so different in their architectural styles and the challenges in decorating they both provide to the Environment Committee." In spite of the many hours Sahr puts in as the sacristan of the two parishes, she has no intention of quitting. "I see myself continuing my job at Church of the Resurrection and St. Michael Parishes because I enjoy it," she said. If you see Jean Sahr at church, be sure to say hello and Thank You!!!

"We hope to draw upon the Wausau community for donations and plan a pick-up service to make donating large and bulky items easier," he said. Tokarz became involved in St. Vincent depaul because of Father Bill Grevatch. "He was a big influence in encouraging us to step out in faith to get the project going," Tokarz said. "Father Bill attends almost every St. Vincent depaul meeting and has been a strong inspirational leader and supporter from the beginning." The most rewarding aspect of working for St. Vincent depaul for Tokarz is "seeing the face of Christ in the poor, and the development of a strong, small faith community within the Cabrini Conference," he said. "Also, the personal spiritual growth, and seeing the lives of those we serve changed, or at least impacted in a positive way, by a Christian witness of our members." 7 7 LENT 2013 YOUTH MINISTRY BY : LEEANN LELLA Care Packages We have been busy in youth ministry this fall and winter. On December 5, our middle school students once again made and sent care packages to our college students. They baked cookies, made trail mix, Chex Mix, Rice Krispy bars and much more and then packed them all and sent them off in time for exam week about 20 packages total. The college students were very grateful here is what one had to say Thank you for the box of treats. It really made my week. It was so good to know that I was being prayed for during exams. Thank you. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Spare Time with Fr. Tim We had a youth ministry bowling event at Coral Lanes in December. It was a fun afternoon of pizza, bowling and friends. Fr. Tim is an excellent bowler, so teens tried to beat him gift cards were awarded. It was a great event. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Giving Tree Youth Ministry again sponsored the Giving Tree at both parishes this year. Thank you for your generous response! We were able to provide over 200 gifts for children at the Neighbor's Place, many included snow pants, coats, boots and toys. Through your generous support of the gift cards we were able to help numerous families within our own parishes. We also had a penny challenge through Faith Formation and the children and teens raised an additional $ for the Giving Tree. Your generosity is so appreciated! Thank you for helping others have a special Christmas. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Year of Faith: 3-1/2 Stories of Christmas On December 4, we had our family event to mark the Year of Faith. Families from around our area filled the church at St. Anne for this creative retelling of the Christmas Story. Some of our children were angels for this event. FAITH FORMATION BY : LEEANN LELLA Year of Faith We continue to celebrate the Year of Faith, the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. There have been wonderful speakers on the topics of Church, John XXIII, and the council itself. The presentations have been throughout the deanery with about 300 individuals in attendance. Some wonderful presenters are still coming up February 21, St. Mary in Marathon: Diann Wimmer, retired director of sacred worship for the Diocese of Green Bay, will speak on the transformative power of the liturgy. March 21, at St. Mark Parish in Rothschild: Sr. Diane Bergant, well known scripture scholar, will speak about how we view Scripture differently in the light of Vatican II. There are also presentations in April and next fall. Please visit the website to listen to previous talks and for upcoming events Operation Christmas Child Each year the Faith Formation students support the ministry known as Operation Christmas Child. This ministry brings Christmas to children in poor, oppressed and war-torn parts of our world. Children here pack a shoe box with items such as soap, toothbrushes, coloring books, small toys, etc. These are then sent to children around the world. This year our Faith Formation families sent 65 shoe boxes. Great work! Check out the website for more information. 8 Eastside Parishes 621 Second Street Wausau, Wisconsin NON-PROFIT ORG. US POSTAGE PAID Wausau, WI Permit #534 Recently I heard a great mission statement for our Eastside Parishes: Reaching out and welcoming others ---all in Jesus name. It s captures what we are about. I believe we have been reaching out in Jesus name in two very important ways. The first way is through our St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference Ministry. Through it we are reaching out in Jesus name to the poor and needy. It is an awesome ministry thanks to the Cabrini Conference volunteers and your generous support. This ministry is also looking into the possibility of opening a St. Vincent depaul Store. The store will help meet the needs of the people they serve. Pray that this store project will be successful. The other outreach ministry we are doing in Jesus name is the Warming Center at St. Paul UCC Community Center. Many of our parishioners have been very involved in getting the Warming Center opened on February 1 and have volunteered to help out at the center - thanks to the leadership of Dr. David Barr. I believe these two ministries, as well some others, have brought excitement and enthusiasm to our parishes. They have helped us be more welcoming and hospitable as we are called to be. It is a sign that our parishes are alive and well. Thank you for Reaching out and welcoming others --- all in Jesus name. God Bless you and I am proud to be your pastor. P.S. Our St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference will be honored at a luncheon at St. Michael s on February 20th. They will be receiving the Catholic Charities In My Name Award from Bishop Callahan for their great work. The proceeds from the luncheon will go to the Warming Center at St. Paul s. It will be a wonderful way of showing our appreciation for our St. Vincent depaul Cabrini Conference Ministry.
