1 The Uniting Church in Australia 26 th June, 2016 WELCOME TO THIS NEWS-SHEET OF EVENTS AND GENERAL INFORMATION from LEOPOLD UNITING CHURCH Who is My Neighbour? by Brian Lee Russian Jack Halls Creek WA Russian Jack was the gold miner who pushed a gravely ill fellow miner 300 kilometres in his wheelbarrow. His determination to get him to the nearest medical facility in Wyndham made him a hero amongst his fellow miners during the 1885 gold rush. This momentous feat demonstrates the endurance levels of the pioneers of the region. (Monument to Russian Jack at Halls Creek, WA) When my family migrated to Australia in 1989, we were welcomed with open arms by the Australian community. The horror of the Tiananmen Square Massacre was fresh in the memories of many Chinese migrants. Those of us who fled the terror of the tanks were very grateful for the opportunity to start a new life in a new country. Fast forward to the present, and we have seen a gradual erosion of this country s generous spirit. People on boats are turned away. Aid to overseas communities is slashed. For me, the principle of love thy neighbour is the most important message in the bible. That naturally raises the question of who is my neighbour? Jesus gives the answer in the parable of the Good Samaritan. It was the humble Samaritan, not the priest or the Levite, who came to the help of the injured traveller. What is the message for us today? Perhaps we need to consider how we respond to people who are experiencing hardship, whether they are living in poverty or escaping from persecution. Will we turn our backs on them, like the priest and Levite? Or will we be like the Samaritan and offer them a helping hand? Reflection: Everyone on this planet is our neighbour. It doesn t matter if they have different religious beliefs or live on the other side of the world. Every human life is precious. Brian Lee
