THE LECTIONARY STUDY for April 4, 2010, Luke 24, 1 12, Easter, Year C. Some Gut Trip Analysis is provided as a sermon starter. The Color is WHITE OR GOLD for Easter Sunday. The season of Easter: Easter is a period of 50 days to prepare us for the birthday of The Church at Pentecost. During this time the emphasis is on the resurrected life; also, this is known as living the sanctified life. Gut Trip Analysis prefers to name it the AWAKENED LIFE. In Gut Trip Analysis the emphasis is on the experience of new birth and new life. What does it mean to be Awakened except to be re-born, renewed, re-formed? THE GOSPEL OF LUKE: The purpose of Luke s gospel is to affirm that the message and the messenger are the same. When we speak of Jesus the man, we are looking at a living demonstration of the Good News at work. When we hear Jesus speak, we are hearing the revelation, the epiphany, and the announcement that God does not abandon us ever, and this is the Good News. Interestingly, all of the other Eastertide lection references will be from John s Gospel. Something to think about: A Gut Trip treatment of the image: the stone is rolled away There is evidence that most people want to live transformed lives. The question is why do we continue to act as if the stone is still in place? It is possible to ground this situation (condition?) in several ways. What comes to my mind is the statement, I ve been abused! While there is no denying the reality of the pain this causes, what happens is that some people continue to live out of this story. Abuse has kept the stone of pain in place. The Easter Story is that the stone is rolled away! Jesus demonstrates for all of us that we can die to allowing our story to define us as victims rather than as victors. Does this make the reality go away? No way! What Easter does is to bury this story, and to note the possibility of our resurrection to a new story. A Gut Trip treatment of the image: the empty tomb--- There is evidence that most people want to live in the light of wonder and human possibility rather than darkness of despair. The question becomes, why do we continue to act as if the darkness is not overcome? It is possible to ground this situation (condition) in several ways. For instance, take the statement, I m living with a troubled youth. A troubled family has kept the tomb filled with death. The Easter Story is that the tomb is empty! Jesus demonstrates for all of us that we can die to allowing our story to define as victims rather than as victors. Does this solve the family problems? No Way? What Easter does is to bury this story and to note the possibility of our resurrection to the Jesus Story. The Story of Our Lives (Faith History vs. Actual History) One of the great misconceptions among men and women of faith is that much of the Old Testament can be coordinated with actual events in history. What is actual history about the New Testament is the physical evidence of the established church. Something profound was going on that changed the paradigm so completely that history does name the old paradigm as BC (now: BCE before the Common Era) and AD (now: CE the Common Era). Christians named this time, The Jesus Christ Event. Concerning the OT, while there may be a few tempting hints there is not much to claim as fact. Does this make the Bible untrue? Not at all. This book is so true because I can pull my life through it, and when I do I find meaning and a great deal

of satisfaction. What happens is that the Biblical story becomes my story. Once I was lost, but now I m found; once I was asleep and now I m awake; once I lived independent of God, now I live dependent on God for everything. THE GOSPEL OF LUKE. The Gospel of Luke has as its purpose to prove that the man Jesus and the message of Jesus are of one piece, you hear the message and you see the meaning of the life and death of the man Jesus. You look at Jesus and you hear the meaning of the message of Jesus. About today s scripture. I wish those who developed the modern lectionary did not do such things to us as offer two lections, such as one using John 20: 1 18 and the other using Luke 24: Why this choice? I m certain there is a scholarly answer somewhere. The purpose of Luke s Gospel AFFIRMING THE LIFE, MESSAGE AND DEMONSTRATION OF JESUS MESSAGE Affirming The Transparent Christ The Fulfillment of the Message Transparent Events in The Death of Jesus as the Christ Luke 21: 1 24: 50 Easter Sunday The Fulfillment Luke 24: 1 50 GUT TRIP ANALSYIS RECOMMENDS THAT YOU MEMORIZE THE FOLLOWING: Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Ps. 51: The Key to this sermon is to ground the following before you begin writing. This means to define the word, describe your experience of it, and then illustrate it. Getting this grounded in your own experience and illustrated will change your sermons from ho-hum to a real message of victory and hope. Along the way, I ve shared a thought or two to inspire your efforts. Old Code Words/Phrases Vs. 1A, The first day of the week Vs. 1B, Very early in the morning Definition Experience Illust./Film Clip John is more specific: It still is dark (John 20 1B)

Vs. 1C, The women.. went to the tomb Vs. 2, Found the stone rolled away Vs. 3, When they entered they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus Vs. 4A, While they were wondering about this... Vs. 4B, Two men in clothing that gleamed like lightening stood beside them Vs. 5A, (The women) in fright, bowed down Vs. 5B, (Angels?) Why are you looking for the living among the dead?) Vs. 6A, He is not here, he is risen! Vs. 6B, Remember how he told you while still in Galilee, the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, 3 rd day raised again Vs. 8, They remembered his words Vs. 9, Back from the tomb, the women told these things to all the others Vs. 10, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and others.. told the Disciples

Vs. 11, But they did not believe words seemed like nonsense Vs. 12A, Peter, got up, ran to the tomb, bent low, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves Vs. 12B, He (Peter) went away, wondering to himself what had happened The Sermon Title: Vs. 1B, Early in the morning The Theological Focus: Christology as an awakening event THE ONE THING to get said: The empty tomb defines us! THE EXISTENTIAL AIM: Live an empty tomb life THE CAPITAL VERSE to be used responsively: Vs. 6, He is not here. The ITCH: How is this the story of my life? The Souvenir: Distribute colored pictures of a sunrise. Make this a project for the children s SS classes on Passion/Palm Sunday. AN OUTLINE BASED ON THE SCRIPTURE ** The Lowery Loop Pre-ITCH: (Establishing the Ambiguity) Establish the difference between actual history and faith history. (I m using a conversation with my wife about this difference.) Actual history is based on historical evidence, while faith history is the story of my life. The ITCH: (Driving home the Ambiguity) Ground the experience of Faith History 1. Pick your time and characters. Note how the experience of these ancients still informs our experience now. (I m using Abram/Sarai who answered the call to obedience and got new names; Jacob and Esau as contending brothers; the Prophets who interpreted their times; how God struggled to awaken the People of God for 2,000 years.) 2. Jesus demonstration Quickly ground your understanding of Jesus ministry and message (I m using: Because we humans live in spiritual darkness, Jesus: Awakens, Enlightens and Illuminates the darkness)

The UGH!: (Pushing the Ambiguity to the deeps) Note how Hollywood examines our spiritual darkness 1. Film Clip? (Use something not too frightening. This is Easter Sunday!) 2. Hollywood s use of the Horror genre Jaws, the Chainsaw Massacre, Frankenstein, etc. The AHA: (The Gospel s unusual solution) Note how the Bible explores our spiritual darkness 1. Luke offers us help Vs. 1, Very early in the morning John add, It was still dark. Share the theme that Jesus was born, crucified and resurrected while in the dark! Vs. 2, It is the women who found the Stone rolled away! Note the ways in which we chose to live in closed up tombs Ground 2. Vs. 9, More darkness? The women ran to tell the men Share your understanding of their response 3. Vs. 6, Share the significance of the angel s message The GOOD NEWS: (Be sure it s Good News) The empty tomb makes sense of the darkness 1. What difference does this make to the story of our lives? Share your insights! Whee! (Nailing down the point) Vs. 4 the question remains with the angels, What story can we tell? Why do we continue looking for the living among the dead. HE IS RISEN! SEND OUT: On this Easter Sunday morning, you are sent out to live the story of your life. CHRIST IS RISEN! HAPPY EASTER! This sermonic progression is described in more detail in the following resource: Lowry, Eugene L., The Homilectical Plot: The Sermon as Narrative Art Form, Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2001.
