CHRISTMAS 2010 All good Scouts deserve this book as a Christmas Pressie!
The funeral of a renowned COMTOS, Colonel Pat Ive, took place on August 26 at Poole Cemetery. Here is a report from Hugh Nicklin, who, along with Ron Wildman and George Hendley, represented the TOS Association on this sad occasion There were six of us from the TOS amongst a congregation of about 100. The crematorium was certainly packed. Mike Curtis, Graham Barnett, John Pitt, Ron Wildman, George Hendley and myself. It was an emotional and moving service celebrating a life well lived, with a mixture of family, friends and military colleagues attending. Graham read a great tribute which hit exactly the right note both in tone and content. Pat's son Peter's tribute showed him to be a doting family man and dearly loved by all. Pat was over 90 and had been very active all his life. Peter related an incident when Pat was 70, teaching his grandchildren how to wheelies on a bike! Unfortunately he fell off and needed a few stitches. However he was not deterred but got back on the bike again as soon as he was able. Men like Colonel Pat are rare these days, a true hero and a gentleman -- we should remember him with pride and appreciation of having known him. Hugh (Neddy) Nicklin TRUCIAL OMAN SCOUTS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE PROJECT: This important project is still very much alive and will eventually progress to the point where interviews with veterans 2
will take place, submitted films and photographs copied in modern formats and donated memorabilia catalogued. As far as funding for association activities are concerned, look again at the wording regarding that subject in the project leaflet that I sent you. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT YET DONE SO, RETURN THEIR COMPLETED QUESTIONNAIRES TO Dr JAMES ONLEY AT EXETER UNIVERSITY, as soon as possible. ***** AN IDEAL CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU! A message from the authors of Arabian Days Gentlemen with the approach of Christmas we have decided to keep the special TOS discount on the book until 20 th December 2010 ( 15 including P & P - UK only). Do not delay remember the Christmas postal rush, and stocks of signed copies are moving fast. Available from Michael Curtis, Gastons, Kilmeston, nr. Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 0NL. Terry says: Have a word in the shell-like of a loved one, and you will be able to unwrap your own copy of this colourful book on Christmas morning! **** MAY 14 TH TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION 3
This special event, arranged to celebrate the formation of the Trucial Oman Levies/Scouts, is going to be a unique occasion. Everything possible will be done to help members who may need help with finance, transport or overnight accommodation, in order to attend the lunch and enjoy the afternoon at The Royal Overseas League, in Park Place, St. James, London. Please put your name down NOW! No need for payment until next year. **** Recent items about the George Cross medal winner, Ali Batti has reminded association member, John Davey (REME) about the day he saved him from serious injury, or worse. On the morning of the incident I'd just got back from a tea break and was walking across the workshop yard when I heard the sound of someone trying to start a vehicle. It turned out to be two Arab apprentices trying to start a Land Rover and another(ali Batti) was under the vehicle. One of them was operating the starter and the other was pouring petrol into the carburettor. I shouted and started to run towards them the engine back fired. The lad pouring the petrol dropped the tin he was using to pour the petrol onto the engine and then the petrol caught fire and was dripping down onto Ali's face. I dragged him out by his feet and managed to put the flames out on his face and clothing. I think I almost smothered him as well as the flames. He finished up with just a small scar on his face and was back at work next day. Whilst all this was going on a couple of the other mechanics put the fire out. It was all over in a very short time with very little damage. 4
**** From member, John Lloyd: GK Beaulah & Co supply TOS car badges. Their address is: Heritage House, Park Street, Kingston upon Hull, E Yorks. HU2 8RU. Tel info@beaulah.co.uk **** REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY PARADE AND LUNCHEON Those who took part in the parade, apart from myself, were: TONY FORD, who came over from Germany, BRIAN JONES, from Ireland, MIKE CARNE, from Holland, BOBBY CAMERON, from Scotland, :HUGH NICKLIN, from Cornwall, SID FALLA and GEORGE HENDLEY, from Dorset; while, from various parts of the country, BRUCE NORMAN, TREVOR HARDING, GORDON LOVELL, TUG WILSON, PHIL YORKE and ALAN HARNEY, who lives in London and very kindly provided Phil with overnight accommodation; all attended. For which much thanks. Association members, JOE HUGHES and LOU LYDDON attended the lunch at the Civil Service Club; as did ANGELIKA FORD and EILEEN NORMAN. My own personal disappointment was that despite my best efforts, due to mobility problems, I was obliged to Fall out from the parade as it made its way back to Horseguards. I was not best pleased with myself. 5
When I eventually managed to make it to the club for lunch, I was heartened to receive a little billet doux, signed by most of those present. It consisted of an illustration of an army cook (For those that don t know it, I was ACC) with one of the more printable insults we grew used to receiving, written upon it; RATION ASSASSIN! I shall keep it always. I have to say that the meal served this year was somewhat like the famous curate s egg it was good in parts. Treasurer, PHIL YORKE, has done a magnificent job again this year; as illustrated by the annual accounts. Thank you, Phil. I had a few things to say in answer to various queries from members. Briefly: The friendship and loyalty shown towards me by so many members during my recent difficulties was so heartening, I could not bring myself to joke about it. I send my thanks to one and all. As far as I m concerned, animosity no longer exists between the secretary of The TOS Officers Association and me What s in a name? I now declare that we are certainly NOT the TOS Other Ranks Association and we are NOT the All Ranks Association; but we are still the original (and best!) Trucial Oman Scouts Association and, as such, welcome TOS veterans whatever their rank. 6
Tug Wilson proposed that, when a member dies, all members with addresses should be informed immediately. This being a little unfair on the 60-70% of members who do not have this facility, I maintained that, if one is an intimate friend of a member, he will be informed of the death by the family. Currently, if I am given sufficient notice, the TOS association is represented at funerals by members living nearest the locality. Tug also proposed that individuals could raise money to aid members in need to attend the 60 th Anniversary Reunion, by offering up TOS memorabilia for sale on the internet. Apparently, these items are making good prices. Please do so, if you wish; but may I suggest at this stage, everyone who can afford to do so, PAY THEIR 12 ANNUAL SUBS, ASAP. If you have not already done so, please send your cheque to DP Yorke, 26, Spencer Road, South Wootton, Kings Lynn. PE 30 5DW If you have any points to raise please contact me at 44, Weller Avenue, Rochester. Kent. ME1 2LG. Tel tjward@jackanapes.co.uk In answer to queries about the burial place of COMTOS, Colonel Stewart Carter: The grave of this great man can be found in the churchyard at the village of Avening, near Stroud, Gloucestershire. A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS 7
