3 What is Advent? The word Advent' is from the Latin Adventus,' which means coming.' Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year, and encompasses the span of time from the fourth Sunday before Christmas, until the Nativity of Our Lord is celebrated. The first Sunday of Advent is the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (which is November 30 th ), and so it will always fall somewhere between November 27 th at the earliest and December 3 rd at the latest. The liturgical color for this season is purple (Usually a deep purple as opposed to the lighter, red-violet shade of purple associated with Lent). Like Lent, Advent is a preparatory season. It has significance because it is a season of looking forward and waiting for something greater; both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ's birth, and for the time when Christ will come again. As noted in the New Catholic Encyclopedia, during Advent, the faithful are asked: to prepare themselves worthily to celebrate the anniversary of the Lord's coming into the world as the incarnate God of love, thus to make their souls fitting abodes for the Redeemer coming in Holy Communion and through grace, and thereby to make themselves ready for His final coming as judge, at death and at the end of the world. Advent Traditions Advent celebration and traditions can vary from place to place, influenced by culture. However, some traditions have come to be common throughout the Catholic Church. The Advent wreath is likely the most popular tradition, and wreaths are typically present in both the parish church and in the home. It is a more recent tradition, with the modern Advent wreath emerging in Germany and spreading throughout Europe and beyond in the 1930's. It is often circular, representing God's eternity, and it includes 4 candles one for each Sunday of Advent. Many families have a wreath in the home, and will light the candles each Sunday and say Advent prayers together. The Jesse Tree is also a popular Advent tradition. A Jesse Tree, named for the father of David, is a tree that is decorated gradually throughout Advent with symbols or pictures of biblical persons associated with the gradual coming of the Messiah, Christ. This includes, among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Joseph and Mary. The Jesse Tree tradition provides a wonderful teaching opportunity; it is a perfect way to teach and remind children about the preparatory nature of Advent. Advent calendars are another popular tradition, although they most often follow the calendar month of December, not the four Sundays which can begin in November. St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Children Gift Cards We are purchasing gift cards from Kohl s for each child age 0 17 of the families we serve. The gift cards permit the parents/guardians to purchase a needed or wanted item for the child. If you would like to assist in covering the cost of these cards, please indicate gift card in the memo section of your check and mail to: St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, St. Columba Church, P.O. Box 428, Hopewell Junction, NY Thank you for your generosity!! COLD & FLU SEASON Cold and flu season is upon us. If you have the flu, please stay home and get better! If you have a cold or are afraid of catching a cold: It is not necessary to shake hands at the Sign of Peace. A simple wave will do. Same as shaking hands with the priest or deacon after Mass. The clergy will be delighted not to catch your cold! At Daily Mass, please do not partake of Holy Communion from the Cup. Remember that Jesus is completely Present even when you only receive the Host. A good idea is to carry with you a small bottle of hand sanitizer. RITE OF ACCEPTANCE We have at eleven adults who are interested in becoming Catholic or completing their Initiation in the Church. They have been participating in our RCIA process by attending classes on Tuesdays, and Father Michael has interviewed each candidate. On Saturday, December 1st, at the 5:30 p.m. Mass, we celebrated the Rite of Acceptance with them. Please pray for them! Our friends from Bethlehem will be here at St. Columba THIS WEEKEND. They will display their beautiful olive wood crafts in the school cafeteria. They make excellent Christmas gifts! Your purchase will support their families back in the Holy Land, ensuring a continuing Christian presence.

4 Immaculate Conception Holy Day of Obligation Saturday, December 8th December 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady. Gifts or gift cards should be returned the weekend of December 15th/16th, For additional information, please call Astor at POLISH WIGILIA (OPLATEK) The Christmas Eve Wigilia Supper forms the focal point of the Polish Yuletide customs. Wigilia, which means vigil, commemorates the birth of Jesus. For Polish families, the meal starts when the eastern star appears through the parlor window to serve as a guide to the Birth of Jesus in the same manner as the star of Bethlehem was a guide to the Magi! The meal begins with the ancient tradition of breaking oplatek, a thin wafer, or bread of love. It is passed to the various members of the family who put it to their lips and wish each other Blessings for the upcoming year. These wafers are now available in the Rectory!
