1 EPISTLE October 2010 ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, GREENVILLE OH Dear Members of St. Paul s, Just a few things to bring you up to date on what s happening at St. Paul s. We recently received the funds from Jean Louise Thieme s bequest to St. Paul s. The $100,000 has been deposited into the bank, awaiting decision on how best to use her generous gift. On behalf of the whole congregation, I want to express my thanks and gratitude again for Jean Louise s life-long devotion to St. Paul s. As many of you know, the vestry contracted with Mote & Associates to draw up some preliminary plans for possible updates to the kitchen/undercroft area. We have received the plans, but have not gone any further as we want input from the congregation as a whole before taking any further steps. Many of you attended (and worked at) the annual Hog Roast. It was a great success once again, and many thanks are extended to the organizers and cooks. I hesitate to name names, because I know I will leave someone out, but everyone s help was appreciated. Everything was delicious! The ministry team has been meeting with John Paddock and Rosalie for several months now, and it seems to me that it is going well. Thanks to Phyllis Nichols, Bruce Bohlander and Gary Benesh for serving on that committee. Paul Rhynard recently completed an application to the diocese for ECCF funds to help defray the cost of the meals we will be preparing at the Grace Resurrection Center. If anyone is interested in helping prepare and serve the meals, please let Paul know. Peg and Bill Riegle, long-time members of St. Paul s, are planning to celebrate their 50th anniversary on October 24 by renewing their wedding vows during the 5:00 service. They are having an open house reception prior to the service, from 3:00-4:30, and would be pleased to have all of us as guests. There is usually a supper after the evening service, but for this special occasion we will have cake and finger food before-hand. We look forward to celebrating with Peg and Bill. Going once, going twice... - St. Paul s enjoyed having the Russian children s artwork on display in he lounge for 3 weeks in September. The artwork was colorful and imaginative. Our thanks to Bee Tanner and her son for setting up the display. The children thank you for your bids and hope you are successful. Bill and Peggy Riegel will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with us Sunday, October 24th. They will reaffirm their vows at the 5:00 pm service. 4 MISSIONARY UPDATE ANITA & MICHAEL DOHN are physicians serving as South American Missionary Society missionaries with La Iglesia Episcopal Dominicana at the diocesan Clínica Esperanza y Caridad. They live along the southern coast in San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic. WEBSITE: DohnFamily@sams-usa.org Hurricanes and Wisdom We prayed about hurricanes this morning. In the final prayer at the Wednesday morning devotional time at the Clinic, the leader asked for protection from tormentas which would include hurricanes as well as any forceful tropical storms. The tropical storms this time of year can cause a lot of problems. Particularly for people living in simple shacks with walls of wooden clapboard or corrugated metal and tin roofs, the rain and wind can be really destructive. Even without the wind, the steady rain from a slow-moving tropical wave will eventually dampen everything inside. There are some things simply out of our control that we have to turn over to the Lord to handle. She added several other uncontrollable elements to the prayer list as well, including power blackouts, the government, and general strikes (general strikes? I started to wonder if perhaps I should have been reading the daily newspaper more closely recently). A lot of things are out of our control here. One of our frequent prayers, usually attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr, is often called the serenity prayer. God, grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference. We are approaching the end of a three-year cycle and will be checking results of the health promoter program. So far, it looks as though there were things we did change and some that we did not. At the least, we will enter the next three years a bit wiser. Keep praying, Michael Dohn PAGE 4

Every 5th Wednesday St. Paul s will take care of the soup kitchen including preparing the meal, serving, and clean-up. The kitchen serves about 60 meals every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. St. Paul s next soup kitchen day is Wednesday, December 29th. More volunteers are needed. Please see Paul Rhynard or Gail Benesh if you can help with this important community outreach effort. Thank you. OFFICE ANGELS NEEDED - A sign-up sheet will be posted downstairs if you would be available to answer the phone, take messages, bring the mail in and answer the door one or more days while the secretary will be away. We couldn t have done it without you! SERVE DARKE COUNTY - Youth for Christ thanks St. Paul s for putting together a team of workers for this fundraiser event. Not only was YFC blessed by the pledges of donations, but the community was blessed by the completion of various work projects.
