ALTAR SERVERS Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. John 12:26 The Altar Server Ministry is an important part of something awesome. You will learn a great deal about the Mass, our Parish and our Catholic faith by serving at Sunday, Funeral and Wedding Masses and partaking in special liturgical ceremonies. The primary role of the server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy. The server helps prepare for the Mass and is a role model for the congregation. By actively participating in the Mass you will be part of the Church in a special way. We ask that you think about becoming part of the St. Mary Parish Altar Servers program by praying and talking to your family. We are looking to increase our present small core of servers and open it up to parishioners from 4th grade to high school. The programs is open to all registered boys and girls of St. Mary Church who have received the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, attend Mass on a regular basis, and be at least the age of 10. All members must be willing to attend an Altar Server Orientation and training sessions, as well as meetings throughout the year. For more information or to sign up, please call Deacon Dave Murnane at or Deacon Frank Crosson Your commitment to the altar is not only a duty, but a great honor and a genuine holy service St. Pope John Paul II DIOCESE OF CAMDEN 14TH ANNUAL BLUE MASS Tuesday, September 29th, 10:30 AM the Diocese of Camden, in conjunction with law enforcement service agencies from throughout the region, will host the 14th Annual Blue Mass Celebration of Law Enforcement and First Responders. 4 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN This fall s 40 Days for Life Campaign (Prayer and Fasting for an end to abortion) will begin on Wednesday, September 23rd and continues through Sunday, November 1st. It is hoped that there would be a least 2 people praying outside the Cherry Hill Woman s Center continuously for 12 hrs. from 7 am to 7 pm, 7 days a week. The abortion clinic is located at 502 Kings Hwy. Prayers are offered for an end to abortion and specifically for those who have scheduled an abortion at this facility, as well as those who work there. As Pope Francis said recently in a letter for the upcoming year of Mercy, that many women who, despite thinking abortion is wrong, feel they have no other choice. He has met many who bear in their hearts the scar of this agonizing and painful decision. By being physically present and praying peacefully at this clinic we are visible signs of God s love. We are the last sign of hope for those going in and the first sign of God s Mercy for those leaving. If you can offer an hour at anytime during this campaign or have any questions, please call Claire Marie at The organizers of the 40 Days for Life Campaign have joined with The Helpers of God s Precious Infants a group of people committed to maintaining a loving and prayerful presence outside the abortion mills. They reach out to the pregnant women going into the clinic and promise her support and assistance if she should change her mind, and prayers for her healing and conversion if she should proceed with the killing of her child. They are at the clinic all year, beyond the 40 Day Campaign. For more information visit SUPERMARKET GIFT CARDS Gifts cards for ShopRite and Acme are being sold as a fundraiser for the Church. The Church receives 5% of every purchase of the gift cards. The gift cards can be used for your personal shopping or they make great gifts for family and friends. They can be purchased after all of the weekend Masses (at Atlantic St. door), at the rectory during the week from 9 am to 3 pm and at Sunshine Flower Shop during business hours. Thank you for supporting St. Mary s Church. LEGION OF MARY The Legion of Mary will continue every Saturday as long as weather permits. We will be leaving from Church after the 9 am Mass. Bring a clip board to record census material. We will be inviting Catholic people to return to the Church. These home visits will be our gift, our Spiritual Bouquet from the parishioners of St. Mary to Pope Francis for making his pilgrimage to us. 5 NEW PROCEDURES FOR ANNULMENT On the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis promulgated a letter entitled The Lord Jesus, Gentle Judge, which revised the canonical procedures for Catholics seeking a declaration of nullity (annulment) for a marriage. The Holy Father made it clear that the Church s law and pastoral life are ordered to the practice of charity and mercy and ultimately the salvation of souls. In fact, Pope Francis made it clear that he is not promoting the nullity of marriage, but the quickness of the processes, as well as a correct simplicity of annulment procedures. These changes have resulted from the world-wide consultation for last year s Extraordinary Synod and the recommendations of a commission of canonists impaneled by the Holy Father to review annulment procedures and the Church s law. In the coming months new procedures and policies will be developed. I have asked the Diocesan Tribunal to prepare presentations for priests, deacons and the faithful before the beginning of December. In this way the Diocese of Camden will be ready on December 8th to implement the changes made by the Motu Proprio. On that day, we. Together with the Church throughout the world, will joyfully commence the Jubilee of Mercy. Dennis Sullivan, Bishop of Diocese of Camden. LIFE CHAIN You are invited to join this annual peaceful and prayerful demonstration for God s innocent unborn babies. The Lord is asking us to spend one hour with Him witnessing for this important cause so please don t let him down...come join us Sunday, October 4th, 2-3 pm, Broad St. & Red Bank Ave., Woodbury (near the Underwood Hospital. For additional information please call Jim Dougherty Readings for the Week of September 27, 2015 Sunday: Nm 11:25-29/Jas 5:1-6/Mk 9:38-43, 45, Monday: Zec 8:1-8/Lk 9:46-50 Tuesday: Dn 7:9-10, or Rv 12:7-12ab/Jn 1:47-51 Wednesday: Neh 2:1-8/Lk 9:57-62 Thursday: Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12/Lk 10:1-12 Friday: Bar 1:15-22/Mt 18:1-5, 10 Saturday: Bar 4:5-12, 27-29/Lk 10:17-24 Next Sunday: Gn 2:18-24/Heb 2:9-11/Mk 10:2-16 or 10:212 SEPTEMBER 27, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna." Jesus' listeners would have recognized this reference. Gehenna was in fact a deep ravine located outside of Jerusalem that had a sordid past. It had been the site of pagan rituals in which children were forced to walk through fire. Thus the spot had become known as a symbol for the fires of hell. In today's Gospel, Jesus is making a dramatic contrast between "life" (heaven) and Gehenna (hell). He emphasizes that no sacrifice is too great to keep oneself out of the miseries of hell. His images are shocking. Cutting off hands and feet? Plucking out eyes? Ouch! Is hell really so bad that we'd rather go to heaven maimed than go to hell in one piece? Apparently so. Some interpreters suggest that Jesus was using hyperbole to make his point. Perhaps. But whether it was literal or figurative, the point remains clear: we need to do whatever it takes to avoid sin and ultimately to avoid hell. The catechism defines this state of eternal misery as "definitive self-exclusion from communion with God" ( 1033). Yes, self-exclusion. God doesn't "send" anyone to hell. Rather, someone chooses hell when he or she freely chooses something over God and won't repent. The choice is ours: cut out the source of the sin--painful though it may be--or stubbornly march with our beloved sins straight into Gehenna. Realistically, what we choose "over" God are not so much our physical body parts as things like a high-paying job that isn't ethical, a favorite pastime that isn't morally upright, or a relationship that isn't chaste. Jesus tells us clearly today, whatever it is that "causes you to sin, cut it off." Period.

6 CATHOLIC CHARITIES 40 DAYS OF FRANCIS Pope Francis quote of the week : Poverty calls us to sow hope...poverty is the flesh of the poor Jesus, in that child who is hungry, in the one who is sick, in those unjust social structures.! Knot of the week: 19% of children living in the Diocese of Camden live below the federal poverty line. 12% of the Diocese s total population lives in poverty. The Pope has arrived in Philadelphia! We joyfully conclude 40 Days of Francis in the Diocese of Camden by welcoming the Holy Father and his message of love and service to the poor to our neighboring city. Let us continue to sow hope throughout the Diocese of Camden as we respond to the cry of the poor. Information on how you can continue to stay connected to Catholic Charities will be available at: CatholicCharitiesCamden.org40Days.
