4 Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary In both East and West, the months of May and October are set aside on her honour. In the West, this tradition stems from the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. The feast commemorates the Battle of Lepanto which took place in October The Battle was the climax of a war against invading Muslims. As the situation became more and more desperate, Pope Pius V called Catholics throughout Europe to pray the rosary asking Mary to intercede for a Christian victory. A decisive naval battle took place on the first Sunday of October The far-outnumbered Christian fleet met the invading Muslims off the coast of Greece in the Gulf of Lepanto. By the end of the day, almost all the enemy had been driven to shore or drowned. Europe was saved. Soon afterwards Pope Pius successor, Gregory XIII, decreed that the first Sunday in October would be the feast of the Holy Rosary. In the East, October 1 is one of the most beloved of all feast days, the Protection of the Mother of God. This feast pays honour to a miraculous intervention. According to the ancient chronicles of Nestor, the inhabitants of Constantinople prayed that the Mother of God would protect them from an attack by a large Rus (the early Slavic nation) army at a time when Rus was still pagan. Nestor suggests this took place sometime in the ninth century. Tradition recalls the story of how Mary the Theotokos appeared to St. Andrew the Fool for Christ inside Blachernae church in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). Early in the morning of Sunday, October 1, St. Andrew saw the dome of the church open and Mary enter, floating in the air above him, surrounded by angels and saints. St. Andrew saw Mary kneel and pray for all faithful Christians throughout the world. She also asked her Son, Jesus, to accept the prayers of all those who turned to Him for protection through her intercession. After, Mary rose and spread her veil over all the people in the church as a sign of her protection. 4

5 St Andrew turned to his disciple, St. Epiphanius, who was standing near him, and asked, Do you see, brother, the Holy Theotokos, praying for all the world? Epiphanius answered, Yes, holy father, I see it and am amazed! Following the appearance of the Mother of God, the invading enemy was thwarted and the city spared disaster. The name of the feast Protection is a translation of the Ukrainian word, pokrov. However, protection does not convey the full significance of pokrov, which has several meanings. First, of all, it refers to a cloak or shroud; it also means protection or intercession. For this reason, the name of the feast is also translated as the Veil of Our Lady, the Protecting Veil of the Theotokos, or the Intercession of the Theotokos. Indeed, it would take a rather long English language sentence to express the full meaning. We are given the mental image of a caring and loving mother, spreading her cloak to shelter her children from harm. It is an image to which any child can relate. 6 St. Basil the Great Parish Project 2018 Fundraiser will be held Saturday November 3rd, 2018 Ticket prices are $60.00 each for the dinner and draw, or you may purchase a draw ticket only for $ The dinner and draw ticket is inclusive of a dinner (meal), all drinks, entertainment and elimination draw with prizes totaling $2000. This is a wonderful evening of fellowship, you might be lucky and win a prize, and the price is still a bargain compared to other parishes and organizations. Tickets will be made available at the entrance of the church, on Sundays, during the month of October, based on ticket availability. Please identify when purchasing group tickets (minimum 8) whether you would like a table reserved. Tickets are also available at the parish office, (204) Note, tickets were sold out over the last few years so buy early and don t be disappointed. Brother Knights/St. Basil parishioners, A big thanks to our brother Knights John Solomon, John Bazarkewich, Alex Zimrose, Gerry Skochyles, Andy Labay and UCWLC member Dorothy Prychitko for your invaluable assistance in helping to prepare and serve a hot meal on Thursday, September 20, 2018 for the community and live-in members at The Welcome Home located at 188 Euclid Avnue. The Welcome Home continues to provide a variety of programs to serves both single adults and families of the North Point Douglas neighborhood in Winnipeg's inner -city. Thursday's program is time for conversation and fellowship for the adults and time for kids to play before the Vesper service. After the service, the hot meal is served family style and all are asked to help with setup and cleanup. The evening meal is conducted under the capable and dedicated leadership of key volunteers Carolyn and Linda. Vesper service was conducted by Father John Sianchuk with Father Larry Kondra in attendance. During the service, Father John spoke at great length about the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Your kind and continued support of the various fundraising events in our St. Basil's parish held by the Knights of Columbus Council #11021 and our Ukrainian Catholic Women's League helps us raise funds to support community programs such as the meals we continue to provide at The Welcome Home. We welcome volunteers to assist our St. Basil's parish organizations with these events. There is a great need for volunteer outreach and service in our city. 8 KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS Thank you to all of the parishioners, Brother Knights and Brother Knights from Saint Anne s, Bishop Ladyka, Fr. Filipow, Father Shyshkowich and Holy Family Council, who attended the 25th Anniversary Charter Dinner, thank you to Holy Family council for presenting Saint Basil Council with a honorary plaque commemorating 25 years as a council. Thank you to the planning committee for their hard work, Crystal and Richard Hryniuk for providing the entertainment, and to Severyn Shved for taking of the commemorative photos. Congratulations to all of the Knights who received their 25 year pins, and to Dan Labay and Mervin Cherewyk who received their 50 year pin as a Knights of Columbus. The question you hear often asked what is that the Knights do with the money they raised? that question was answered in part by the presentation put on by Tony Sklar and Martin Nechwediuk, which showed that the Knights contributed $35, to the rectory/house projects, some of the major items were Windows and Furnace replacement, Air Conditioning, Roof replacement, Basement Bathroom addition, Stove, Oven etc. $81, was donated to the parish, major items donated to will be listed in subsequent bulletins. That is why the Knights need the support from our parishioners, in the various events put on by the Knights, like the upcoming Fall Harvest Dance on October 20th, we need and require the support of our parishioners if we are to continue working as a Family in Christ in our parish.
