Maybe you've showed up at School in your pajamas, or you went to a formal party in sweatpants, It's a common enough dream, based on the fear of sticking out in the crowd or not belonging. 10:00 a.m. (Rosary precedes each Liturgy by one half hour) WEEKDAY SERVICES (Tue-Fri) 8:30 a.m. Rosary followed by Liturgy CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS The parable in today's Gospel reading can speak to us about this fear in our spiritual lives. We can sometimes wonder, "Am I going to have a place-in God's kingdom? Am I good enough?" But this parable reminds us that we are welcomed into God's feast because he has freely invited us, not because of what we have done. "Bad and good alike, we have all been gathered up and invited to the banquet hall (Matthew 22:10). This has some big implications for us. First, it means we have no pride of place in God s kingdom. Even as we can sometimes doubt our own worth, we can just as quickly doubt other people s worth, especially if they are younger or newer followers of God. But Jesus tells us we are all equal in his kingdom. We belong only because of his gracious invitation. Our host knows where we are coming from, and he is ready to supply us with the proper wedding garments at his expense. But we need to wear these garments. We need to choose to clothe ourselves in Jesus Christ by adopting his way of

2 life. It can be tempting to stick with our own "clothing" by choosing self-reliance over faith. But that would be like showing up to a posh dinner dressed in blue jeans and a wrinkled T-shirt! Think for a minute about the magnitude of this invitation that you have received. Don't allow the busyness of life to distract you, as it did the invited guests in the Parable. Tell God that you want to accept his gracious invitation, and ask him to build anticipation in your heart for his banquet Then put on Jesus Christ as your wedding garment, and prepare to celebrate the wedding feast of the Lamb! "Lord, clothe me in your wedding garment, and bring me to the feast! PEACE BE WITH YOU 'Peace' is a word which looms large in the Christian vocabulary. People desire many things power, pleasure, wealth, but whether they realise it or not, they long for peace. As is the case with many of the words and phrases with which we are most familiar through constant use, it is quite possible for us to go on uttering this word 'peace', day in, day out, without ever pausing to reflect on what it actually means! Of course, the dictionary definition of peace is simple enough: 'quiet; tranquility; mental calm; serenity; freedom from disturbance...' - but how exactly does this apply in the context of our faith in the risen Christ? 'Peace be with you' is the greeting that Jesus gives to his disciples when he comes and stands among them and he repeats the phrase as the disciples rejoice when they recognise him on that first Easter Sunday evening. He uses an identical greeting when he comes to them again eight days later. Earlier, in the course of his farewell address to his closest friends before his passion and death, Jesus had told them not to let their hearts be troubled at his going away: 'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you'; but he added 'not as the world gives do I give to you'(jn. 14:27). Again, he says to them, 'I have said this to you so that you may have peace.'(jn. 16:33) Perhaps you find peace in a quiet location in the country somewhere, or in solitude, or staring into the mesmerizing flames of a log fire, or listening to the rhythmic breathing of waves at the seaside, maybe through meditation, or simply in a good night s sleep. The greatest peace of all is the peace that everyone longs for but it passes all human understanding. It s this peace that Jesus gave to his followers just after he had risen from the grave. The disciples needed God's peace; they had locked themselves away because they were frightened that the Jewish authorities were coming to get them. Let s remind ourselves of how they got there.

3 They were all young men. They'd given up their careers to follow a man called Jesus. He was a charismatic leader and had a view of the world that was new and different. While they had been with him they had seen and done some extraordinary things healings, even bringing people back from the dead. They had become convinced that Jesus was the Messiah the person God had promised who would make the Jews right with their God. Some of the teaching they had received had been difficult for them to understand so they hadn't really taken it in. They had been preparing to go into Jerusalem for the Passover festival. There were always huge crowds at the festival. Jesus had chosen to ride into the city on a donkey. The crowd realised that He was fulfilling a prophecy. Here comes the Messiah! They all knew it every one of them! There was cheering and praising God. The next day Jesus went into the temple and threw out all the traders who were ripping off the people. It was the first time the disciples had seen him really angry. They shared a Passover meal together, and what Jesus had done there had seemed very odd. After the meal Jesus was in a strange mood, and kept insisting they stay awake. Then soldiers arrived with the chief priests and Judas. Jesus was arrested. The disciples had followed him at a distance, but kept quiet about who they were because they thought they would be next. Then Jesus was crucified like some common thief and the disciples had fled. The disciples had experienced grief at the death of their Lord, and we know it was no easy death to witness. They were also racked with guilt for abandoning their master when the going got tough. What s more their lives were now in danger, and that s why they were hiding away behind closed doors. But Jesus never was predictable and after the Sabbath the day of rest when no work is permitted they had reports that He was alive. His body was certainly missing from the tomb. They quickly got together and carefully locked the door. No doubt they were already under suspicion of stealing His body. They were expecting to be arrested and face the same fate as their former leader. What are we going to do now? [How would you answer that question?] Then a voice said Peace be with you. Not just any voice Jesus' voice. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. (John 20:19) What kind of greeting is this? It s good news. It s pure gospel. It s absolution. The first thing the risen Lord Jesus does is to forgive their sins and declare to them that all is well. He steps into that nervous, barricaded room and banishes any fear of death, any fear of condemnation. Here is the fulfilment of the Christmas annunciation of peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased. Peace was the one thing they most certainly didn't have. You can't have peace when you think that someone is about to arrest you and crucify you!

4 Or can you? What does peace look like? Picture yourself as a lit candle. Think of a fan as representing outside events that you have no control over. A shield between the fan and the candle is like the peace of God protecting you from the effect not from the events themselves. What does God s peace look like? Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Phil 4:5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Phil 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. Phil 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. What peace is not? According to Paul the peace of God is deeper than we are capable of understanding, but that does not mean we cannot get closer to understanding it. Sometimes it is easier for us to understand what something is by looking at the opposites. Here are some things that the peace of God is not: Fear Anxiety Worry In-action Resting Sleeping

5 Let's have a look at another reason why the disciples needed God's peace. Jesus said Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. So their immediate problems of being caught by the Jews were not so important. They are to take over Jesus' job. Then he breathed on them and said Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. That's the job Jesus expects his disciples to do they are to pronounce the forgiveness of sins. They are to decide who to forgive and who not to forgive. It is about the hardest thing that you could possibly be asked to do. If you forgive them, they too can have eternal life. If you don't forgive them they are condemned. Jesus said on the Cross Father forgive them they don't know what they're doing. It is no easy thing to forgive when you have been wronged. That's the reason we have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us the powers of discernment so that we can see things from God's point of view, and have the power to forgive. What makes the peace of the Lord supreme? How is it so unique? Why will I never find this kind of peace sipping a tall cool one at a beach café, reading the morning paper with the gentle cries of seagulls and the lazy lapping of water in the background? How is it superior to self-realisation and meditation techniques that try to find peace from within oneself? The peace of Christ is more than an emotion. It s the result of God s gracious presence with us through his Son. Our Lord s words, peace be with you, are more than just a greeting. These words impart divine peace because they come from the one who has defeated all that threatens us, and who now stands in the presence of his people. Now this doesn t mean that your work will suddenly cease to be stressful at times. It s no guarantee that all your relationships will be smoothed out, or that your neighbourhood will be free of crime, or that your country will never go to war. But in the midst of life s turmoil, the presence of the risen Savior creates a peace that passes all human understanding, a deep-seated peace that holds fast even when the world around is giving way. While various forms of meditation teach a retreat from physical reality, the peace of Christ means entering into the fullness of life with God in Christ. God s peace is not attained by a process of emptying but of filling. His is an alien peace, as it comes to us from outside ourselves. God s peace is not just a theory or an idea, but a concrete reality. Jesus entered that room in person. The disciples, including the doubting Thomas 8 days later, were able to touch him and to eat with him. He was no figment of their imagination. But so that you may also know this peace, our Lord has established concrete means through which he

6 comes to you: through His powerful Word; through the action of water and word in Holy Baptism; through the regular reception of the Lord s Body and Blood in the Eucharist. You don t have to be super-spiritual to know God s peace. You don t have to be a guru. Little children can know it. The same peace that filled the occupants of that upper room in Jerusalem fills our church when we gather for worship. God grants us this peace here in worship, and we possess it, despite what is going on outside the church. The peace of the Lord runs like a golden thread throughout our worship and extends into our daily lives! Even as we prepare to worship, we confess our sins to God, and receive that longed-for forgiveness. Until this happens we are restless. We are like the disciples, hiding away from ourselves and from others. But then with great relief we hear those words spoken as from Christ himself: I forgive you your sins peace be with you. And so we enter into our worship saying, in peace let us pray to the Lord. Then we arrive at the Eucharist. What better way is there to receive ongoing peace than through the sacrament where we receive Christ s Body and Blood, given and shed for the forgiveness of sins, for the restoration and preservation of both body and soul? After this we truly can go in peace. You would be amazed at how receiving the Eucharist more than once a week increases the feeling of peace within. It changes you. The final blessing aptly closes with the words Let us go forth in peace. And that s not where it ends. The peace of forgiveness is not exclusively the domain of the pastor. You exercise it in your homes, in your congregation, your workplaces, in your extended families. You are the true peacekeeping force in the world. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you, said our Lord, just before entrusting his church with the ministry of peaceful reconciliation. God s peace is abundant and free. What would keep anyone from receiving it? Well we saw how Thomas resisted the news of the risen Lord. Unless I see, I will not believe Unless I touch him, I will not believe. I will not How sad when people willfully shun Christ. O what peace they often forfeit by abstaining from the presence of Christ. He is available to you in the Eucharist six days a week. Divine forgiveness is God s gift to the world. It brings us into the presence of God. It destroys death and guilt. It dispels fear and gloom. Through it, the risen Lord brings peace to sooth all grief and woe. True peace consists in knowing and being totally in harmony with God through the presence of the risen Lord Jesus. Fear, violence and sin vanish in the face of this divine peace. It is the elusive peace for which humanity searches frantically. Since Jesus rose from the grave, peace is available and free to all who receive the Lord in faith. It makes its

7 way out of closed doors into the world through his church, through us, who have been commissioned to continue His mission of reconciliation. THE KISS OF PEACE At the exchange of the kiss of peace, we are not actually attempting to directly give divine peace to those around us. Rather, we are expressing our sincere desire that God will give them that gift. By saying, peace be with you, we are, in essence, offering a prayer on behalf of the people around us. It is to acknowledge the peace Christ had won for us by his blood shed on the cross, by which we are reconciled to God and to each other in the Person of Christ, in the Church which is his body. This element of the Mass is better understood when we consider its context. The exchange of peace takes place in the context of preparation for approaching the altar to offer ourselves to God and to receive Holy Communion. In St. Matthew s Gospel, Jesus gives us a strong warning about that particular moment of worship: Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:23-24). This is an application of Jesus admonition that the second greatest commandment (to love our neighbor as ourselves) is linked directly to the first greatest commandment (to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength). St. John the Evangelist made this connection very clear in his First Letter: If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen (1 John 4:20). So we are not supposed to approach the altar unless we are living in basic charity with our neighbor. If we are holding something against or refusing reconciliation with another person, it s as if we were doing the same thing towards God himself, that person s creator and redeemer. And so it would be a contradiction to come to receive Holy Communion, which is an expression of our

8 desire for union with God and a means to achieve that union, while at the same time refusing to work for reconciliation and union with our neighbor. Through the rite of exchanging the peace of Christ, we give concrete expression to our sincere desire to love our neighbor. How could we be hating our neighbor if we are wishing them divine peace? And so, this exchange of peace becomes a beautiful expression of supernatural love for one another, which opens our hearts to receive more worthily and fruitfully the grace of God. It is a fitting preparation for our approach to the altar and to Holy Communion. By expressing our sincere desire that those around us might receive the fullness of God s blessings, we open our hearts to be better able to receive that fullness ourselves. And by asking God to grant it to us before we approach the altar to receive Holy Communion, we humbly admit our absolute need for God s grace in order to experience the happiness we long for. St Paul (Ephesians 2:14-16) again is crucial for this understanding of the Kiss of Peace: For he [Christ] is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. The emphasis now is not on some gesture of goodwill towards another, but on mutual recognition that the blood of Christ, about to be received in Communion, has put us at peace with God and also in each other by uniting us into his body, the Church, where together we receive his body, the Eucharist. The profound communion we have in Christ and the peace for which we pray should not be understood in a shallow way. Peace here is not the shallow meaning of the world but the richer Hebraic understanding of shalom which is a wish for all possible prosperity, the state of a person who lives in complete harmony with nature, self, God and others. Christ is the source of all peace. Our greeting of one another at this moment of the mass should not be construed as a mere have a nice day or How ya doin?' Given our membership in the Body of Christ, what He has just accomplished on the altar, and the communion we are about to receive, we both wish and experience shalom. The greeting we extend is no mere human greeting, it is the greeting of Christ: May the peace of the Lord be always with you.

9 The church asks for peace and unity for herself and the whole world. The faithful express to each other ecclesial communion and mutual charity before receiving Holy Communion. One should share the sign of peace only with those nearest to them. Hence, the leaving of one s pew is generally not appropriate. The sign of peace is not a meet and greet but rather it symbolizes the communion and peace of the whole Church in Christ. Because we are one in Christ and all members of the Body of Christ, to exchange the sign of peace with a few is to exchange it with all. The Sign of Peace is a rite within the Mass, and so involves a ritual, not a free-for-all. The Sign of Peace is a preparation for Communion so our focus should remain on Christ. The sign is of Christ s peace, not our own general goodwill to others, or worse, to only our friends and family. It is an acknowledgement that we are in fact united in the Body of Christ who is our peace. If it is to be offered, surely it should be offered to those we do not know, the stranger in our midst, the fellow Christian with whom we are at peace in Christ despite our not knowing him or her. When offered only to friends and family it becomes a vehicle of exclusion of others (so inappropriate when about to receive the Lord s Body and Blood); when offered carelessly or hypocritically, or worse when it is refused, it causes scandal to others and can ruin their preparation for Communion. To offer a sign of Christ s peace that unites us in a way that is facetious or insincere is to risk both sacrilege as well as scandal to our neighbour, and so is no fit preparation for Communion. Remember that the words in the Kiss of Peace are the words of the Risen Lord when he appeared to the disciples: Peace be with you (John 20: 19, 21). When Jesus initially told his friends that he was leaving peace with them, when he promised them his peace, he wished to comfort them as he was about to depart, to undergo his passion and death. He left them with the assurance that ultimately, after his resurrection, he would return and draw them even closer to himself in a deep communion of life with him and the Father and the Holy Spirit - that Spirit of Truth who 'dwells with you and will be in you'(jn. 14:17). The key to this new life which springs from the indwelling of the Holy Trinity is Love - an active love which flowers in the keeping of Christ's commandments: 'Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them' (Jn. 14:23); and again: 'If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love.'(jn. 15:10) The peace of Christ, therefore, as He himself tells us, is not just peace as the world gives or understands it. Certainly, it should bring us serenity, mental calm, and an imperturbable tranquility - but it is something vastly greater than all that. To rest in a 'peace' which consisted simply of freedom from disturbance would be at best but a doubtful blessing - it sounds more like a recipe for boredom than bliss! No, the peace of Christ is something

10 alive and active, something liberating and dynamic. It is life and love and joy. Paradoxically, it is a gift which both calms and challenges us - it does not grant us an immunity to pain and suffering, or even death, rather it enables us to face all these painful realities and triumph over them in union with the victory of Christ himself. Just as Jesus came to the disciples on that first Easter Sunday evening, while they were hiding in fear behind closed doors, so too he comes today and shows himself to us, bringing us his peace, and enabling us like them to rejoice in the knowledge that he is risen indeed. He invites us to share in his resurrection and in his life of glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit. But to us also he shows his hands and his side, bearing the marks that remind us that his victory and peace was attained through his passion and death. He beckons us to join him in freely offering up to the Father whatever pain or suffering we may experience in our lives, so that dying with him we may also rise with him and share in that peace which the world cannot give.
