1 2004 January 2013 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Please be sure to join us for our January 15th meeting. The January meeting will truly be a highlight for the new year as we welcome our National President, Eileen Guenther. Together with Valerie Carter, Adjunct Instructor in Sociology at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, they will lead a discussion on how to achieve better participation in our chapter and its programs. The basis of much of the discussion will be the excellent return response to our recent Richmond Chapter survey taken this past fall. Dr. Carter, with her written report as a handout to all who attend, will examine the results of the survey and share with us her interpretation as we look to our future in becoming a more involved chapter in our city. Both Drs. Guenther and Carter will offer their creative ideas as we adapt the work of the chapter to the needs of the membership. Dr. Eileen Guenther National AGO President Dr. Valerie Carter Adjunct Instructor in Sociology J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Your host, Bill Brown Location: Ginter Park Baptist Church 1200 Wilmington Avenue, Richmond, VA Richmond, VA Schedule: 6:00 PM Gathering ~ 6:30 PM Dinner ($10) ~ 7:00 PM Meeting ~ 7:30 PM Program Menu: Pork Tenderloin, Roasted Red Potatoes, Steamed Broccoli, Tossed Salad, Roll, Assorted Cakes Dinner cost $10. 2 DEAN S MESSAGE Do You Know???? Many of us know someone who does not attend AGO Guild meetings or is not a member, and we should each really try to change that. Do you know someone who may think his or her ability and training is small and insignificant, who feels uncomfortable with some of our professional talk, or thinks that a person has to hold a degree or an AGO Certification Certificate in order to be worthy of membership in the AGO? Do you know someone who would enjoy professional contacts and discussion of mutual problems in music ministry? Do you know someone who does not like to or is unable to drive at night (could you offer them a ride?) Perhaps you know someone you could invite to attend an AGO meeting and even offer to pay for their first AGO guild dinner. A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!! Remember to play with hands and feet in such a manner that God is praised, and the soul s of all inspired to worship. Steve Henley THE DEAN S LUNCH Our next lunch date is Thursday, January 17, at 12:15 P.M. at Brio Tuscan Grille, 9210 Stony Point Parkway. See you then. EDUCATIONAL CONCERNS I was looking at possible music for Epiphany and realized I already had a piece I could use. It is the tune PUER NOBIS NASCITUR by Gerald Near. It is the tune for hymn # 124 What star is this with beams so bright from Hymnal 1982 used in the Episcopal Church. It also happens to be a selection for the Group C of the Repertoire section of the CAGO Exam. If you learned this piece, you would already have 1/3 of the repertoire learned for that exam. A selection from Group A and Group B would round out the Repertoire section nicely. I hope one of us would consider taking the CAGO or the SPC Exam this year. Mary Elizabeth Campbell, Educational Concerns WELCOME BACK We welcome the return of the following members: H. Edwin Godshall Doug Brown (Ginter Park Presbyterian Church) CD RELEASES The set of DVDs, CDs, and a book about Cavaillé-Coll organs as produced by Fugue State Films in England is expected to be shipped to the U.S. subscription takers, OHS and Raven, on or about December 14. Allow a few extra days to clear U. S. Customs, after which the sets will be sent by OHS and Raven to about 550 subscribers on our continent. Both Raven ( and OHS ( are still taking orders at the last pre-production subscription prices, and the set is also available for pre-production order through Amazon and E-Bay. After the sets are received, the price is expected to increase markedly as the finished product includes much more material than previously expected and announced by Fugue State Films. As now being manufactured, the set includes three DVDs, two CDs, and an 80-page booklet almost eight hours of filmed material plus almost three hours of CD recordings. The booklet contains photos and detailed specifications of the organs and full information about the contents of the CDs and DVDs. The two CDs contain performances on 16 Cavaillé-Coll organs. The organs are listed in chronological order and the CDs feature compositions from the same period as each organ or music closely associated with a specific organ. Visit the Churches Of Richmond and Central Virginia For organ specifications and virtual tours of the churches of Richmond and Central Virginia, please visit the Churches of Virginia web site at:

6 American Guild of Organists, Richmond Chapter John G. DeMajo, Editor 6001 Statute Street Chesterfield, VA R ETURN SERVICE R EQUESTED We re on the Web! DID YOU KNOW? This month s feature organ is not an extraordinary installation in an historic home or museum. It is simply a home organ that was acquired and installed by an organ student in Buffalo, New York. The significance is in the owner s own story about why he undertook the mission of placing this organ in his home. Owner Doug Peters relates that he first purchased the little Schlicker from the estate of his first organ teacher. It s one of a number of small Schlickers ranging between two and fifteen ranks, that had been built according to a specification laid out by the late E. Power Biggs. What Peters considers special about the installation is that he performed the work himself with the assistance of friends who were also organ students at the time. He credits this experience as being an important part of his music education. According to Doug, far too many organists today complete their training with little or no exposure to the fine points of organ construction and maintenance. He believes that a musician can have a better understanding and sense of creativity with the organ if he or she has had hands-on time working with the various behind-the-facade components that go to make up the total organ. The very successful move and reinstallation of this Schlicker has benefited not only Peters, but also the other students who assisted him in the project. Doug s sentiment is shared by many including those teachers and students involved with the American Organ Institute of the University of Oklahoma. The school is one of the first in the nation to make hands-on organ building an integral part of the curriculum for organ students. Perhaps this new direction in training will prompt a greater understanding for the workings of the instrument, as well as the possibility that more true pipe organs will be constructed and restored in the future.
