For information about upcoming weekends call Lisa & Tom Castaldo at STATEN ISLAND, NY The Sacrament of the Sick Quarterly Communal Celebrations at Holy Child The Sacrament of the Sick is administered quarterly during the 9 o clock Saturday Mass on the last Saturday of March, June, September and December. The next administration of the Sacrament will be on Saturday, 17 th September 2016 This Sacrament is intended for those with serious or chronic illness, those who have been diagnosed with or who are undergoing treatment for grave disease, and for those who are bearing the burden of advanced years. The Lord Jesus is operative with his graces of spiritual comfort and psychological consolation if not out right physical healing (always a possibility) in the divine gift of this Sacrament. HOLY CHILD YOUTH GROUP MEETING Our first meeting of the season is tonight September 11, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rectory Large Conference Room. 4 TWENTY FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MUSIC DEPARTMENT New members are always welcome (and encouraged!) to join any of the choirs/ensemble. You can even come to a few rehearsals to see what we do. For more information on any of these groups, please contact Sandra at or at holychildmusic@yahoo.com. All choirs will resume rehearsals on Tuesday, September 20 th in the church except for the Youth Choir. The Youth Choir will resume rehearsals on Tuesday, September 27 th. Note - There is no fee to join any of the choirs. Youth Choir (Grades 3+) (beginning 9/27) Tuesday: 3:30 p.m.- 4:45 p.m. The Youth Choir participates twice a month at the Children s Masses throughout the school year. They also perform in a special Christmas Eve concert before Mass. Teen Choir (Grades 7+) (beginning 9/20) Tuesday: 3:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. The Teen Choir participates twice a month at the Children s Masses throughout the school year along with the Youth Choir. This new choir will work on more challenging music. They also perform in a special Christmas Eve concert before Mass. Youth Ensemble (students proficient on all instruments) Tuesday: 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. This ensemble of young musicians participates at the two monthly Children s Masses, Christmas and Easter Masses. New and returning members should contact Sandra prior to the first rehearsal. Handbell Choir (children and adults) (beginning 9/20) Tuesday: 5:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. The Choir meets from mid-september through the Feast of Corpus Christi in the spring. The Choir rings twice a month at Sunday Mass and for special Feasts and parish celebrations. They also perform for the community several times a year, including at Christmas in Richmondtown and Scalia Tree-Lighting Ceremonies. Neither experience nor ability to read music is required to join the group. The Choir (beginning 9/20) Tuesday: 7:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. This group, open to high school students and adults, sings at the 11:00 a.m. Mass from September through the Feast of Corpus Christi in the spring. Music reading ability is helpful, but not required. The choir sings different styles of music, including traditional and contemporary. Cantors Youth (grades 6+); Young Adult (grades 9+); Adult If you are interested in becoming a cantor at any of the Masses, please contact Sandra for information regarding training. Note - you do not need to commit to being a cantor every week. Holy Child s Fourth Family Fun Fair Saturday 24, September In preparation Holy Child Parish SUPER 50/50 SWEEPSTAKES Drawing Held at 4 th Annual Family Fun Fair September 24, Ticket for $ Tickets for $20.00 WINNER NEED NOT BE PRESENT You can purchase tickets after all masses on the weekend of September 17/18, as well as in the Rectory office during the week. Plans are underway for our Fourth Annual Family Fun Fair. Between now and then we are enlisting the aid of those who would care to pitch in to make it happen. Anyone interested in being involved in one of the aspects of this event may inquire by calling the Rectory at or by ing the Preschool at holychildprek@gmail.com. If you have new items, gift cards, or lottery tickets you wish to donate for raffles, please drop them off at the Rectory. We are in need of cases of bottled water and soda (cans diet and regular). All donations of water and soda can be brought to the Parish office. Discounted Family Fun Fair wristbands will be pre-sold after all Masses on 9/17 & 9/18. 5 SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 RISE AND SHINE! As told before, there is a regular group of 12 who gather punctually at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday in church availing themselves of Morning Prayer, or Lauds, from The Liturgy of the Hours, official prayer of the Church. The joy of that liturgy here is that it is executed as every liturgy should be. Everyone is in place on time to respond to the Invitatory or call to prayer. Thence, everyone recites together with synchronized voices the appointed psalms and canticles of the day capping each one with a full throated declaration of the Doxology i.e. the Glory be The responses to the declarations and petitions are done by all in unison in response to the leader. Voices are at rest as all lend attentive ears to the brief selection from Sacred Scripture. Those at this liturgical event are never late and never leave early and actively and attentively participate all the way through. All are invited to praise the Lord with the Liturgy of the Hours Monday through Saturday in our church. Prayer is always beneficial and the mode and manner of this particular prayer form at Holy Child Church is an optimal worship experience now exercised and enjoyed by the twelve but not exclusively.
