2 Pastor s Corner For many of us who live in New England, the summer months provide cherished opportunities for recreation and relaxation. That is also true for the parish s dedicated staff members. Although they will be taking some time for themselves at different times, the parish office hours remain unchanged through the summer. I am very grateful to Fr. Fador for his generous offer to give me some time for personal renewal. I also wish to thank all those who were generous to me on the occasion of my fortieth anniversary of ordination. I am especially grateful and humbled by the gift of a beautiful chalice and the extra time and effort put forth by some of our musicians and singers to make the fortieth anniversary Mass so beautiful and memorable. Thank you, thank you, Welcome to our new Director of Music & Liturgy Catechesis of the Good Shepard is coming to our parish! Catechesis of the Good Shepard is a Montessori approach to FAITH FORMATION FOR CHILDREN ages 3 to 6. It is a wonderful way for children to experience and participate in the stories of scripture and our liturgy through hands on learning. Don Smith and two parishioners, Janet Dehetre and Bonnie Stone, will be completing an extensive training in August to be able to be certified to teach this program we are launching this school year. All the materials used in the program are hand made so we need some help! We need people who are able to sew, do woodwork, and make clay models. If you are skilled in any of these areas and can help we would welcome your participation! Leon Griesbach comes to Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish after five years as the Director of Music at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. In this capacity he has directed choirs at liturgies and concerts throughout the City of Rome and in Vatican City, including the Holy Father s historic visit to the Pontifical North American College in Mr. Griesbach studied music at the Catholic University of America where he met his wife Cassandra. He has served as the Director of Music at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Director of Music for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, and the Artistic Director of the Boy Singers of Maine. He has also performed throughout Maine as a Baritone soloist. When he isn t working, Mr. Griesbach enjoys spending time with his family and friends (especially if he can cook for them), and reading. July 22 is the feast of Mary Magdalene. Who was she and is it true that she was a prostitute who followed Jesus around in his ministry? Recent biblical scholarship has been trying for a long time to correct Mary Magdalene's misconstrued reputation as a prostitute. Biblical information reveals her as one of the most important disciples of Jesus, following and financially supporting him during his ministry. She is also a faithful witness both to the Crucifixion and the first to see the risen Jesus. Further, in John's Gospel, she is commissioned by the risen Jesus to announce the good news to his disciples. Thus, she becomes the first evangelizer and proclaimer of the risen Lord. Her reputation as a prostitute arose from the misunderstandings of certain texts in Luke. Luke 8:2 reports Mary as being a follower of Jesus "from whom seven demons had gone out." This passage follows Luke's story of the sinful woman, a prostitute, who bathed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. Since that woman is not named, there came to be an association of that woman with Mary Magdalene, "from whom seven demons had gone out." Thus Mary became known as a prostitute. The readings and prayers for her feast day make no mention of her reputation as a sinner. Rather, they emphasize and highlight her role as the first witness to the risen Lord, and the first one commissioned by Jesus to tell of the good news to the disciples. Let us continue to be Mary Magdalene to the world.

Golden Age Club and New Auburn Seniors are sponsoring a trip to Mohegan Sun Casino on Wednesday, October 3, Cost of the trip is $45.00 per person. This includes a $15.00 meal voucher and a $15.00 free play. Pick up will be at 1243 Lisbon St., Lewiston, ME (across from the old MacDonald s, where these used to be a motel). IHM Golden Age Club (50+) Our next Meeting is August 14, We will meet at Oxford Casino s Pub. Lunch is from the menu with separate checks. We will gather at the Casino between 11:30 and 12:00. We look forward to seeing you all. New members and guests are always welcome. Altar servers from around the state and their families are invited to gather with Bishop Robert P. Deeley and area priests for the Altar Server Festival on Sunday, August 19, from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The festival will once again be held inside and outside St. Mary of the Assumption Church on 41 Western Avenue in Augusta. The event will begin with a special Mass, celebrated by Bishop Deeley and concelebrated by area priests. The Mass will be followed by server games, a fun competition where servers from parishes compete in various games that test their server prowess. The games include Server Jeopardy, Sanctuary Hopscotch, Vesting, Candle Lighting Relay, and the Reverent Ring. A family barbecue featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, and other treats will cap off the day at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per family to help cover the cost of the dinner. All servers are invited, with permission from their altar server coordinators, to bring a server robe or cassock and surplice from their parish to wear for Mass. Servers who plan to wear a robe or cassock and surplice at Mass must arrive by 1:30 p.m. Servers should bring a change of clothes for the games after Mass. If you have gently used children s books that you are no longer using, we will gladly take them for donating to Catholic Charities Maine Day Care Centers and families who visit community food pantries. Please drop off your children s books in the plastic container conveniently located in the and St. Philip church entrances.
