1 October, 2014 The Canticle From The Dean... It has been very exciting to return to day-to-day life at the Cathedral following my summer away. It is immediately clear that both the staff and lay leadership really stepped up to the plate during my absence. Far more than keeping things running, they made some thoughtful changes and innovations. This is a tribute to the dedication and skill of our volunteer and professional leadership, and I am sure that the presence of my esteemed predecessor, Dean David Lowry served as a catalyst to this process. More than any other time in my tenure, I experience this community to be vibrant, energetic and brimming with creativity. Fundamentally the Church seeks to know Christ and to make Him known, and we do this best when there are many people who feel empowered to create and lead ministries. In the current Cathedral environment, being the Dean is more akin to conducting a symphony of talented musicians than being a single performer on center stage, and this is very satisfying. I have said before that Church membership is a nebulous creature in our time. Suffice it to say that if you are reading these words and you consider yourself part of the Cathedral Community, I am grateful to have you, and hopeful that you will both participate in and financially support our common life to the extent that you are able. Everything that we do depends upon the gracious generosity of the people of God, and in Him the possibilities are endless. The Episcopal Church All Saints Day All Faithful Departed & All Saints Sunday All Saints Day is Saturday, November 1. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 AM in the Chapel. We will collect names beginning October 12 on sheets in the back of the cathedral and chapel for the annual reading of the necrology during the All Faithful Departed or All Souls Day Eucharist at 12:15 PM on Monday, November 3, in the chapel. All Saints Sunday is November 2 and is an opportunity for Holy Baptism at the 10 o clock Eucharist. Welcomes You

3 Annual Thrift Sale The Annual CCC Thrift Sale Is Only Weeks Away! NOW is the time to clean out your closets, cabinets and cubbies!! The CCC Annual Thrift Sale will be held on Saturday, October 12, and we will start the much anticipated weekday merchandise collection beginning Tuesday, September 2. We also continue to accept items on Sunday mornings, before/after the 10:00 AM service. (Please remember that on Sundays there is no staff available to assist.) Beginning September 3, the weekday drop off schedule is: Monday 2:00 PM 4:00 PM Tuesday - Friday 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM until 4:30 PM Please make note of these times. We appreciate your cooperation in respecting the lunch hour exclusion. If you will need help unloading, please call ahead ( ) to make an appointment so someone will be readily available to assist you. (Sometimes the appropriate staff members are tied up in a project, and we don t want you to have to wait for an extended period of time.) We store items behind the tall red screens in the back of Stuart Hall, so please be prepared to pull up to the Sixth Street door or the back parking lot for easy off-loading. It will expedite things if you call ahead so staff can unlock either the back gate or the Sixth Street door for you. If you only have a few things and don t mind carrying them back to the Hall, then just come on in the front during drop off hours. Not sure if your treasures are right for the CCC Thrift Sale??? We can use pretty much any items you have that are in good shape. ( But we can t sell used underwear, used computer parts or mattresses.) Housewares, appliances, books, jewelry, videos, DVDs, children s items, bric a brac, musical instruments, silver, gold, china, toys, working electronics, linens, blankets, clean clothing, belts, ties, handbags, luggage, artwork, tools, pool & patio items, holiday items, Mardi Gras beads, furniture, etc. Receipts for tax deductions will be available. PICK-UP SERVICE AVAILABLE Alice and Frank Hopkins have a small truck and have volunteered to help with your larger items (in the metro N.O. area.) We have limited storage space, so we ll begin accepting large and furniture items after Labor Day. Frank can only pick up by appointment (he does have another, paying job!), so please call Alice at to make arrangements. Many thanks to Alice & Frank for providing this much-requested assistance! If you have other questions, call Diane Piret at ( dapiret@aol.com) or Alice Hopkins at ( grits736@hotmail.com) While bags are certainly welcome, if you have boxes to pack your treasures in (or put bags into a box) that would be helpful since boxes are easier for us to stack. If not, that s OK we reuse the bags at the sale too! This is a Green event that recycles all your stuff! If you have a little time, we sure can use your help the week before the sale for set up. We very much need volunteers during the set-up week (October 6 10). Even if you only have one afternoon or a few hours some mornings, we ll be glad to have you join us. Can t do lifting? That s OK we have lots of sit down jobs. Can only help during retail hours? We need sales associates and cashiers Friday 4-6 and Saturday 8-12! Just let Diane or Alice know that you d like to participate, and we ll remind you as the time approaches. Please remember this event isn t just a fundraiser, but helps our neighbors acquire things they need at a fraction of the cost of new in the stores. (And YOU benefit by having tidy closets, a tax deduction and perhaps some new friends!) As has become our Thrift Sale Team tradition, the Sale helps fund Christ Church Cathedral needs and, at the Dean s request, we will continue to underwrite the Cathedral s costs of our important Sunday coffee hour hospitality ministry. (While our parishioners generously furnish the food, other items the coffee, sugar, napkins, etc. are not covered by donations.) A portion of the proceeds will also go to the New Orleans Mission. Rummage isn t your thing? Monetary donations towards our goals are very welcome. Make check out to CCC and designate Thrift Sale in the memo section.) Whether donating merchandise and/or volunteering your time and talent, this event can t happen without you. Thanks for all your support!!!

5 Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative Since 2010, Christ Church Cathedral has collaborated with its neighbors in Faubourg Delassize to carry out the GREAT PUMPKIN PARADE. Prior to this partnership, many families would travel into the Garden District on Halloween to Trick-or-Treat. The Faubourg Delassize community was dealing with a crime epidemic and many residents did not feel comfortable walking the streets of their own neighborhood at night. The Faubourg Delassize Neighborhood Association came up the idea of doing a safe route for trick-or-treating and having an ending celebration at a trusted location...which became Christ Church Cathedral! The Cathedral had already become home to numerous community meetings and Cathedral parishioners also donated candy and their time to help make the first event a success. And a success it was! This summer, Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative hosted the a six session Cooking Matters course! Thanks to a generous donation from Second Harvest Food Bank, this course is totally free to all participants. Cooking Matters aims to teach participants to cook tasty and healthy meals on a budget. Each class features one recipe, and at the end participants receive all of the ingredients to replicate the meal at home! The first class made healthy mini-pizzas with English muffins, veggies, and fresh basil from the Faubourg Delassize Community Garden! Participants also had great and informative discussions about making healthy lifestyle choices a dialogue that continued throughout the entire course. We experienced high attendance throughout the session and ended with one last cooking class and a ceremony where participants were awarded certificates of completion. Thank you so much to Christ Church Cathedral for providing kitchen and meeting space! What a difference it makes having great facilities being offered by a generous congregation! Be on the lookout for the next round of classes!!!

You can help us keep up our reputation for great hospitality by volunteering to host Coffee Hour one Sunday. Drinks are provided by the cathedral and volunteers provide their choice of food. Host with a friend or two. If you have no time to shop and prepare food, donations are always gladly accepted. For additional information or to volunteer, contact Kathy Boy, or kboydaj@yahoo. com. Recent hosts: Christian Education Committee, Sarah and Liam Whalen, Lynn Gladney, Verna Barrett, Barbara Richmond, Sue Blankingship. The Gardening Group meets every third Saturday of the month from 8am to 10am in an attempt to beautify and maintain the gardens. The next gathering is scheduled for October 18. Everyone is invited. Your help is appreciated. Baptism Many thanks to all! Calling All Gardeners! is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints Day or the Sunday after All Saints Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a Bishop is present. (BCP, page 312). Our next opportunity for baptism is November 2.
