1 June/July, 2014 From Advent House... Alleluia! I love being an Episcopalian and realizing that Easter lasts for The Great Fifty Days (and I can wear my Easter socks that long!). I want to thank the many folks who donated to Advent House s Lenten Ask letter. We simply cannot do it without you and I am grateful so grateful for this ministry and your connection to it. Remember that, although the focus of this ministry is to provide spiritual direction for clergy and clergy spouses and partners, it is open to all. All you need is an openness to look at what God is doing in your life. Call if you are interested. I am working on some new programs for Advent House and letting go of some that seemed not to be speaking to people. We will no longer do a formal Thursday Quiet Morning at Advent House. I am looking into having a prayer group begin and also doing some workshops on things like Centering Prayer, Body Image, and a Faith and Reason series. It would help if people would let me know what you might be interested in and what time. They will probably be during the day, but I am open to evenings as well. The Canticle The Episcopal Church I have already done two retreat days, one in Advent and one in Lent, and am always open to people who are interested in something like that. I design them to meet the needs of those who come. Book Club is reading Mary Deeley s wonderful book, Mother s, Lovers, Priests, Prophets and Kings: What the Old Testament Tells Us About God and Ourselves. It is an experiential way of going through some of our most beloved Hebrew Scripture stories and seeing how they speak to our own lives. You are most welcome to join us it is an easy read. We will do a novel next time and we meet Mondays from 1-2:30. Here s one of the prayers from it and the assignment that follows: THE WOMAN WHO LAUGHED AT GOD My Dear God, when I was young, you surprised me with the love of my life and then told us we had to move to find another home. When I was more than a few years married you surprised me with an inability to have children and strengthened our love for each other. When I was old, you surprised me with the promise of another life and gently scolded when I laughed at all your surprises. Keep surprising me, Lord, for your surprises and my laughter keep me young and full of life and full of love and full of the knowledge in my deep heart that, impossible as it might seem, where you are is home for me. Bill Forman is seeking additional members for the Education for Ministry Group to continue in September at Christ Church Cathedral. The group is open to all denominations. EFM is a four-year study program sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and The University of the South School of Theology. EFM provides an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of Christian Theology from the Old Testament to the present. The program also gives one a perspective to consider the possibilities of various ministries. EFM is thirty-nine years old and has thousands of graduates worldwide. Holy Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints Day or the Sunday after All Saints Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a Bishop is present. (BCP, page 312). Our next opportunity for baptism is in August, date tbd.
