Setting: Ivor Algernon Atkins The Second Lesson ~ Philippians 3:4b 14 If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. The Gospel ~ John 12:1 8 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor? (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ. All children are invited to participate in our Children s Service of the Word. Children who are guests and parents are always welcome just follow the procession and the adult leaders into the Chapel after the Gospel reading. The Nicene Creed Prayer Book, Page 326 The Prayers of the People Let us pray for the whole state of Christ s Church and the world. Almighty and ever living God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers especially Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Katharine, our Presiding Bishop; Morris, our bishop; Charles and James, our retired bishops ; David, Steven, Gedge, Travers and Priscilla who serve in this place; (those diocesan clergy who celebrate their ordination anniversaries this week, ;) that they may both, by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively word and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present: that with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land, especially Barack, our president; Bobby, our Governor; Mitch, our Mayor; and the congress and courts of the United States that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. We pray that we may have the resources to maintain our buildings and continue our ministries which build up the Body of Christ.

4 And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor ( and) all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. We pray for all nations and peoples ravaged by war, violence or natural disaster; remembering ( ). Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. We commend to Thy gracious care and keeping the men and women of our armed forces and their families, (remembering especially ), that they may have an abiding sense of Thy presence wherever they may be. We offer thanksgiving for those celebrating birthdays and wedding anniversaries. We give thanks for the many ministries that grow out of our common life. We pray today for. We also pray for community ministries of and all whom they serve. We also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, (especially ) beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with thy spirit. 6 Please join in saying Prayer of Humble Access Prayer Book, Page 337 We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Invitation to and Distribution of Holy Communion All persons are welcome at the Lord s table; to receive Holy Communion or a Blessing. Baptized Christians of all ages and denomination may receive the elements. To receive a blessing rather than the elements, cross your arms over your chest as you come forward. To receive communion please hold out your crossed hands, open palms up, for the bread, and then help guide the chalice to your lips to receive the wine; cross your arms over your chest if you do not wish to receive the wine. Please blot lipstick before drinking from the chalice. You may also allow the chalice minister to dip the bread into the wine and place it on your tongue and it is permissible to receive only the bread if you like. To receive an individual prayer of healing with anointing (Unction), go to the chapel after you receive Communion. Kneel as you are able at the altar rail in the chapel leaving some space between you and the next person for privacy. Return to the cathedral after the priest has prayed with you. 7 Announcements... Coffee Hour Class Lenten series, Holy Land Reflections, resumes today. Various participants from the 2012 Holy Land tour will offer personal reflections and insights. Today Claiborne Beary - Deepening of Faith and Claire Beary - Israel through eyes of an 11 year old. Class meets at 11:30 am in the Martin Room. Daughters of the King will meet today at 12 noon at Advent House. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday (March 24) ~ The 10 o clock service will begin in the cloister garden, weather permitting, for the Blessing of the Palms. Holy Week Services begin with the Palm Sunday liturgy next Sunday, March 24. There is a Real Presence style service at 6 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The Maundy Thursday service on March 28 is also at 6 PM. The Good Friday Liturgy is from 12 noon to 3 PM on March 29. The Great Vigil of Easter for the Uptown Deanery is at 7 PM on Holy Saturday, March 30, at St. George s Episcopal Church. No 12:15 PM chapel services during the week and no 9:30 AM Saturday service on Holy Saturday. To Help You Observe A Holy Lent: Is your mite box getting full? Special Easter Sunday Activities: Flowering the Cross, Reception & Easter Egg Hunt On Easter Sunday all children are invited to take part in the traditional Flowering of the Cross immediately before the 10 AM service. Plan to bring some cut flowers of any color or kind to place on the wooden cross. After the service we will have a reception in Stuart Hall and Easter Egg Hunt for the children in the Bishop s Garden. If you can help provide finger foods for the reception, plastic eggs filled with toys or wrapped candy for the hunt, or flowers for visiting children to place on the cross, please sign up on the sheets provided in the back of the church, chapel and on the main bulletin board.
