Anthony, the early Christian desert father once said, I saw all the snares that the enemy spreads out over the world, and I said groaning, What can get me through such snares? Then I heard a voice saying to me, Humility. The modern Church often loses sight of this most basic of Christian virtues. Even worse, from time to time humility is used to justify the subjugation of one group by another. For us as Christian seekers, laboring to keep in the way of Christ, humility is our built-in compass. Our lives are a gift, and our lives in Christ are even more so. The first step in offering back to God a portion of what we have been given is in our behavior toward our brothers and sisters. Humility is the beginning of love, because it keeps us ever mindful that each human creature is equal in value as a beloved child of God. We are therefore charged to honor and respect all persons even if they wait too long to make a left turn, or dawdle when the light turns green. Observing how we treat each other on the roadways indicates to me that too many people get behind the wheel of an automobile and suddenly become the center of their universe. This is a small example, yet it is often in the small places that we can begin to make deliberate changes in how we interact with each other. Look carefully for situations in which you treat others as if you are more important than they are, and you will have found opportunities to cultivate humility. Ask God for the grace that this blessed virtue might flourish within you, and you might even find that it can become contagious! Eden House Eden House, a ministry which rescues women from sex trafficking, is in need of household goods and furniture. 4 Organ Maintenance During the first couple weeks in May, Adrian Cook, our very talented organ technician, will remove 44 of the largest pipes and restore them to proper working order. Thirty two of these pipes came from the organ, originally built for the Louisiana State Fair of 1884 by Pilcher & Sons. That organ was then moved to Immaculate Conception ( Jesuit) Church on Baronne Street. When that organ was dismantled, we became the proud owners of these very large, valuable pipes. As far as we can tell, these pipes have never been fully restored and have given over 130 years of reliable service. Mr. Cook has quite a task on his hands; these pipes vary in length - the largest 2 pipes are 16 feet tall and buried deep inside the pipe chamber. Just getting to them requires quite a bit of agility. (The picture on the right displays the smallest pipe, measuring just 4 feet.) And, since they are reed pipes, they have moving parts. Adrian had new brass tuning rods hand-crafted in England. He will be replacing worn parts and thoroughly cleaning each piece, removing 130 years of dirt and corrosion. Post-Easter Study Program: One God, Shared Stories and Three Faiths Wednesdays, April 26, May 10, May 24, May 31 and June 7 at 1:30 PM (note: No class on May 3 and 17) and a Saturday session on May 27 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM with lunch. All sessions will be held in the Martin Room at the Cathedral. Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the belief in the same one God and are all religions of the Book (Old Testament- Tanak, New Testament and Quran), but nonetheless they have been competitive with each other sometime violently. In this program we will look at what Judaism, Christianity and Judaism share, areas in which they compete and why they don t get along better than they do (and have for centuries). Most of us have Bibles containing the Old and New Testaments; many of us don t have a Quran. I suggest ordering the Oxford World Classics Quran. On Amazon Prime it is currently listed at $6.47. For the more adventurous, I recommend The Study Quran: A New Translation and Commentary, which is excellent, long (nearly 2,000 pages) and expensive (about $50). Also valuable for an understanding of Islam is the Hadith, or the sayings of the prophet. Note that the Quran is what Allah dictated to the Prophet Mohammed, not the inspirations of the prophet that are found in the Hadith. There are a number of editions of the Hadith available from Amazon. Most of us know quite a lot (some, a little) about Judaism and Christianity and little about Islam; I will recommend several books that seek to tell more about the inter-relations between and among the religions from their inceptions to the present time. The most accessible is Jon Levinson s, Inheriting Abraham: The Legacy of the Patriarch in Judaism, Christianity & Islam. More expansive and expensive are Robert Gregg s, Shared Stories, Rival Tellings: Early Encounters of Jews, Christians and Muslims (Oxford University Press) and F. E. Peters, The Monotheists: Jews, Christians and Muslims in Conflict and Competition (Princeton University Press, 2 volumes). Both are long, somewhat difficult and expensive. The more, the merrier so don t be shy to invite your friends to join us!

8 Lift your gaze - Lift your heart YOGA IN THE CATHEDRAL Cathedrals evolved to become spaces which invite the eyes and the heart to lift toward the heavens. The arches point the way for eyes to lift; the stained light from windows high above entice the vision higher; and the lofty vaulted ceilings complete the illusion. Yoga teaches that the heart follows the eyes. This yoga practice will focus on opening the heart to loving kindness, accepting the human-ness of our selves and others and creating a lightness in the heart. But you gotta move to teach your heart to open. All Levels of Experience are Welcome Every Monday and Tuesday 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Baptism Pentecost, on All Saints Day or the Sunday after All Saints Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a Bishop is present. (BCP, page 312).
