1 May, 2016 The Canticle The Episcopal Church From The Dean... In 2016 we are commemorating the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative. It is so rewarding to have reached this milestone having built over 33 affordable houses for low-income families in Central City as well as a community garden, fruit orchard and three neighborhood organizations. Our initial financial investment came from Episcopal Relief and Development. Over the years we have also been funded by Federal, State and City housing grants as well as the National Episcopal Church women, Trinity Church women and the Bishop s annual Community Mission appeal among many others. In addition, we have a number of individuals in the City and around the country that make regular contributions. In 2015, we were officially designated a CHDO (Community Housing Development Organization) by both the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana, and subsequently were chosen to enter into in a New Market Tax Credit project with First NBC Bank. The project is centered around the construction of 10 single family homes in our Central City neighborhood be sold to low-to-moderate income families. This is a huge accomplishment, but it brings a new set of challenges. There is usually a gap of around $50,000 between the below-market-rate-purchase-price and what a family between eighty percent and one-hundred-twenty percent of the Area Median Income is able to borrow. This necessitates the addition of a soft second mortgage to make up the difference. It is called soft because if the homeowner stays in the home for a period of 15 years, the debt is incrementally forgiven. For several years, funds for these mortgages were available from the City out of post Katrina Road Home dollars, but as these funds have dried up, it has been necessary for Jericho Road to self fund these soft second mortgages. So even though the construction of our next 10 houses is funded by the tax credit program, soft second mortgage funding will require that we raise an additional $500,000 in the coming years so that we can fulfill our obligation to sell them to people in the necessary income bracket. One important fund raising vehicle for us takes place on Tuesday May 3, which is GiveNOLA Day. This is the community s one-day, online giving event to inspire people to give generously to the nonprofit organizations that are making our region stronger, creating a thriving community for all. Every hour a donation is made from midnight to midnight on May 3rd makes Jericho Road eligible for an additional lagniappe award provided by the Greater New Orleans Foundation and other GiveNOLA Day sponsors. To participate on GiveNOLA Day individuals can make online donations at org/. The minimum donation is $10. All donations made on May 3rd and designated for us, give Jericho Road the opportunity to earn lagniappe awards and hourly prizes. We also benefit from the number of contributions, so if your time and patience allows, 5 $10 gifts given over the course of the day is even better than a one time gift of $50. As a completely self-sufficient ministry, the fees collected from those attending events at the Center fall short of covering the overall costs associated with its operations, and donations and gifts go a long way toward ensuring that we can continue to faithfully serve those who value retreats and conferences at our Center.
