Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, We just celebrated another joyous Easter Day! It is always a glorious service thanks to the enormous amount of work on the part of so many that make it possible. In addition, there were all those who contributed so significantly to our Lenten and Holy Week observances. It is a huge undertaking by many different people and organizations of the Church. I am very thankful for your faithfulness and the wonderful way you contribute to the Lenten and Easter seasons. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do! As we get closer to my last Sunday, I thought it would be helpful to explain the details concerning my retirement. In consultation with the Vestry, we decided that May 22 nd, Trinity Sunday, would be my last Sunday. We decided that for two reasons. First, my institution as rector was Trinity Sunday Ending my pastoral ministry on Trinity Sunday seemed very fitting. In addition, we know when we get into June more people tend to be away on the weekends. Those are the reasons we settled on May 22 nd. I will have 20 years of ordained ministry on June 30 th. So although my pastoral ministry will end on May 22 nd, I am actually retiring on June 30 th. I will be completing some necessary work between May 22 nd and the end of June. My primary focus will be preparing for transition to the Interim Rector. I will be working with the Wardens on that, but I will not be continuing pastoral relationships or participation on Sunday mornings. During that period, I will also take some prorated vacation time which I have not been able to take so far this year. After May 22 nd, Jay Luby, our Senior Warden will be responsible for the overall operation of the parish in the absence of a rector. He will have this responsibility during the tenure of the Interim Rector as well. Dayto-day supervision of the staff will be the Rev. Becky Gettel s responsibility until an Interim Rector is called. If you have questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact me or one of the Wardens. Clarity around all of this is very important to the Vestry and me. Our hope is to make the transition to the Interim Rector a smooth one. May this Eastertide be a time of great blessing for all of you, Tony Page 3
FROM THE associate by Becky Gettel Dear Community, Happy Easter!!! April 3 rd : New Website Launch! From Sunday the 3 rd on, go to trinityconcord.org to check out our new website! The site was designed by Melody Stanford and then filled in and tweaked over the course of the Winter and Spring by Emily Moss, John Woodward, Tim Blancke, Marc Ubaldino, and myself. We hope you will visit our new site often to keep up with our many ministries! A huge thank you goes to the team, especially John Woodward who, for many years has been our webmaster (giving countless hours and updating the site within minutes of any request from the staff), and all-round tech guy for our phone system, internet connections, and computer needs. John has saved Trinity thousands of dollars and has been more skilled, knowledgeable, and available than any hired tech help could ever be. As he steps down as our webmaster, we want to make sure he knows how very grateful we are. April 6 th to 12 th : I will be away at CREDO CREDO is a clergy refreshment conference where a team of professionals work intensively with clergy on our health, finances, vocations, and spirituality. Tony and I agreed some months ago that this would be a good time for me to have a CREDO experience as we approach our interim time as a community. April 30 th : Deanery Confirmation While our youth confirmation group will not be confirmed on the 30 th, a handful of adults will be either confirmed or received here at Trinity. Please keep Jeff Clements, Craig della Penna, and Peter McNicholas in your prayers as we approach this sacred event in their lives. Yours in Christ, ~Becky Page 4
Spring Brunch on Sunday, May 1 Trinity s Welcome Committee invites newcomers and your families to a Spring brunch following the 10 oclock service. Join clergy, vestry, staff, and parishioners for fellowship, conversation and a delicious meal, while you learn about Trinity and its many offerings. Children of all ages are welcome. Please join us at the home of Lucy and Brian Rosborough, 56 Elm Street, Concord (diagonally across from Trinity). RSVP by April 27: lucy.concord at gmail dot com or alynch at trinity concord dot org. This is our last brunch with Rev. Tony! Page 5
CARING CONNECTION by Anne Lynch Attitude There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "Hmm, " she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today." So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "Today I'm going to wear my hair in a ponytail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head... "YEAH!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!" Author Unknown Our attitude is essential to how we view our lives. And the wonderful news is we have a choice as to what that will be. We can see the good in life, or the downside; we can be positive or negative. Why not appreciate what you have that way every day will be a good hair day! Anne Lynch Page 6
Music notes by Robert Barney Seraphim Singers on April 10 at 4 pm This critically acclaimed, Boston-based group under Director Jennifer Lester, returns to Trinity for a concert of music. The ensemble, dedicated to sensitive and probing performances of sacred music, will present Renew the Face of the Earth : Celebrations of the Beauty of Creation including works by Patricia Van Ness, Gustav Holst, Gwyneth Walker, Abbie Betinis, and a world premiere by Polina Nazaykinskaya. The concert will be repeated on April 17 at the Mission Church in Boston. Tickets are $ Visit for tickets and info. Choral Evensong on May 1 at 5 pm Choirs in Anglican Parishes throughout the world have been singing this Liturgy, offering prayers on behalf of their parishes, for hundreds of years. For this service our Parish Choir will sing settings by Herbert Sumsion ( , Gloucester, England) and Gerre Hancock ( , St. Thomas, NYC). As a prelude to this service, Linda Hossfeld, soprano, will offer works by J. S. Bach and R. Vaughan Williams on the theme of God s Love. Invite friends to this experience of music in the context of prayer. Choir Opportunities Spring is now upon us; a great time to think about programs for the fall, especially if you are a parent of young children. This year s 1st and 2nd graders are invited to join the Junior Choir and no previous musical experience is necessary, or expected. Singers learn how to sing and read music, and how to follow our sometimes-complex Liturgy. Parents have commented over the years how much their children have gained from the program, as both a musical education and Christian Formation opportunity. Rehearsals are Thursdays 4 to 5 pm. There are also openings in Youth Choir (Thursdays 5:15 to 6:15 pm) and Parish Choir (Thursdays 7:45 to 9:45 pm) I encourage you to ask questions about the various music programs. Page 7
Undercroft blessings by Carol Brady Announcing First Sunday Coffee Hours Hosted by Church School Parents! Starting April 3 rd, church school parents are helping to lighten the burden of the vestry by taking over the First Sunday Coffees. If you have a child in church school, (or you used to have one!) sign up to help with one or more of these coffees. Our dates during spring and summer are: May 1, June 5, July 3, August 7, and September 4. Contact Bee Loprete at r.loprete at gmail dot com or let Becky Gettel or Carol Brady know when you can help. Come, Experience the Stations of Eastertide Children and their families can explore the stories of our risen Lord through his Ascension followed by the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. They pick up where the Stations of Holy Week left off at the empty tomb. Starting April 2 through the end of spring vacation week, accompany your children through the stations in the Undercroft at your own pace and at a time convenient for you. For those coming to Family Night Supper on Saturday, April 2 from 5:30 7 pm, Carol Brady and Jenna McNicholas will lead your children through these new stations after a potluck dinner is shared by all. Barbara C. Harris Camp Not Just for Kids! They offer a special Family Weekend (Friday, July 15 Sunday, July 17). Located on a beautiful spot beside Otter Lake in Greenfield, NH, the Camp is a wonderful place to have family fun in the context of a loving Christian community. It s a great way to introduce your young children to the Camp. There are still openings, as well, for children entering grade 4 & up to enjoy a week of summer camp, available from June 26 July 29. Register online at bchcenter.org/camp-programs. Page 8
Church School Lessons for April Classes will focus on the Holy Eucharist and worship. The April 3 rd lesson offers a very simple presentation of a core Christian concept: just as sheep are drawn to the Good Shepherd, so are God s people drawn to the Eucharistic Feast because the Good Shepherd s presence is in the consecrated bread and wine. April 10 th lesson explores the outgrowth of Christian worship from our Judaic roots as we physically transform a synagogue into a church. Children s Chapel is on Sunday, April 17 th at 10 am in the chapel for children of all ages. After spring break, the Godly Play classes learn about Paul s Discoveries. The 4 th 6 th grade class will take a journey through the Book of Acts and along the way walk with Stephen, Paul, Peter & Dorcas. The class will discuss how these early followers lived out their belief in the risen Christ and shared God s love with those around them. How can their faith stories help us be faithful followers of Jesus today? Page 9
Spring happenings Women's Walking Group Join us on Thursday mornings at 11 am. We celebrate the changing seasons by walking through nature and enjoying each other's company. Traverse the trails at Walden Pond, North Bridge, and Fairyland, with no special gear needed. Women of all ages and children are welcome. Contact Regina Nowselski at reginasekkes at yahoo dot com. Monthly Ladies Night Out We meet on the 3 rd Thursday of each month at 7 pm at the Colonial Inn in Concord. Contact Regina Nowselski at regina sekkes at yahoo dot com. Holocaust Remembrance Join us for Concord s annual Holocaust Remembrance at Concord s Town House in Monument Square on May 1 from 7 to 8 pm. This year s speaker is Helen Epstein, veteran journalist and author. Born in Prague in 1947, Helen grew up in the Czech community of New York City, becoming an instant published journalist in 1968 while a 20-year-old college student caught in the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia. Kitchen Tour There is a lot to do before this great event on October 1! We'll soon start visiting houses to choose the kitchens, and can always use people with a good eye who love to see other people's homes. Can you write a dynamic article for local papers and online house-tour sites? We can use you now. We would like to showcase the new Parish Hall in this year's tour. Have any thoughts about how best to do that? If you have a few hours to help on this fun event that helps support Trinity's outreach to local food pantries, come join us. We'll find just the spot for your talents! Contact Sandy Folk at srfolk at comcast dot net or Barbara Morse at bamorsefaep at comcast dot net. Page 10
