FROM THE RECTOR by Tony Buquor Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, In-Gathering Sunday Sunday, November 2 is a very important day. It is All Saints Sunday the day we remember those friends and family members who have been so important in our lives but are with us no longer. But it s important for another reason as well. It s our In- Gathering Sunday when we bring our pledges to the church to be blessed. If you cannot be in church that day, please mail your pledge, or you can pledge online at our website: concord.org. Hover over the Announcements tab, find Stewardship Pledge Form and click on it. Every pledge is important no matter the amount. Remember, over 90% of the funding for the ministries and operation of our church comes from your pledges. Mark Your Calendar The institution of the Rev. Regina Walton, PhD, as rector of Grace Church, Newton 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22 at Grace Church. The institution of the Rev. Nick Morris-Kliment as rector of Christ Church, Needham 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12 at Christ Church. Bishop Alan Gates will preside at both services. I hope many of you can attend to celebrate these new ministries of our former staff members. As we enter this season of thanksgiving may we be mindful of all the good things God has provided in our lives and in the life of our parish. God s peace, Tony Page 3

FROM THE assistant by Becky Gettel Family Nights 2014 Don't Miss our last two Family Nights of the year!!! Saturday November 1st, 2014 from 5:30 to 8pm Children may wear their Halloween costumes and come to play in the nursery (or, if they are older, help out in the nursery) while parents enjoy an All Saints Day dinner, in the Undercroft. Bring some food, wine, or dessert to share. Maybe you will bring something that reminds you of a saint in your life. In memory of her beloved grandmother, Becky may just forget the dinner rolls in the oven until dessert time. RSVP to Becky at becky gettel at gmail dot com or x14. Saturday December 20th, 2014, 5:30 to 8pm Family night in the Undercroft, will follow immediately on the tails of the 4 pm Christmas Pageant Dress Rehearsal. Come at 5:30 pm or stay after rehearsal. If you can bring a salad or dessert, please do, but we will provide the main course and coming empty handed in the middle of Christmas preparations is completely acceptable! We will eat with our kids and then let them do a project with some helpers while we socialize. We will end with Compline (a short evening prayer) and dessert. RSVP to: beckygettel at gmail dot com or x14. Page 4

Caring connection by Anne Lynch As we begin to think about Thanksgiving this month, may we be mindful of what we have to be thankful for. Sometimes it might be somewhat difficult to do that, when the stock market has taken a tumble, and the price of food has skyrocketed. But perhaps if we look at things differently, and focus on what we do have, rather than on what we don t, we might see how blessed we really are. A few years ago I began a tradition that has helped me immensely in doing this. I got the idea from the book, Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach. She introduced me to the practice of using a daily gratitude journal. I can honestly say this has changed my life. No longer do I look at the glass half-empty, but I now see it as half-full. I offer you the suggestion of trying it yourself. Every night before you go to bed write down in a beautiful blank book, five things (no matter how small they are) for which you re grateful. Most of the time my things were simple joys. A couple of times they were just being grateful that the day was over, or I had a nice bed to get into. As writing my list became a habit, I found myself stopping throughout the day to acknowledge something, and telling myself I d write that in my journal. I have become more appreciative of life as I am aware of my abundance. May you, too, not focus on what you don t have, but be grateful for what you do. Happy Givingthanks! I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual... HENRY DAVID THOREAU Page 5

Music notes by Robert Barney Prelude Recital and Choral Evensong All Saints Sunday, November 2 at 5:00 PM Gabriel Fauré ( ) was one of the foremost French composers of his generation and he profoundly influenced music late into the 20 th century. His Requiem, from 1893, is often cited as having been composed for his mother but he claimed that it was not written for any one specific. Unlike many other Requiem Mass settings, it is serene and peaceful, and portrays a vision of God s mercy and the promise of eternal rest. Our Parish Choir, accompanied by Organist Jim Barkovic, will sing this inspirational work as the prelude to a service of Choral Evensong on Sunday, November 2 at 5:00 PM. The soloists are members of the choir. Kisha James will sing the Pie Jesu and her brother Kuk will sing Hostias and Libera Me. After the recital, our Parish Choir will sing the traditional Anglican service of Choral Evensong with musical settings by composers Charles Wood, Philip Radcliff, C. V. Stanford and others, including the anthem And I saw a new Heaven and a new earth by Edgar Bainton. Mark your calendars, spread the word and please invite your friends! Page 8

Choral Evensong sung by Parish Choir Men Advent 2, December 7 at 5:00 PM in the Chapel Choral Evensong sung in the Chapel for Advent is beautiful and meditative and very popular. In past years our Youth Choir has sung this, but our present Youth Choir is young, and needs more time to learn this Liturgy. This year, men of the Parish Choir will sing this service including unison Settings of the Responses that I wrote. The officiant for the service will be our Assistant Rector Becky Gettel. Come, and invite your friends for a brief diversion from the rush of holiday commotion and spend 45 minutes in the presence of God with sung prayer. ASK THE MUSIC DIRECTOR If you have any questions about the choirs or music program in general, please do not hesitate to ask me. I can be reached at ( ext. 20) or barney at trinityconcord dot org. 10 WORD WORSHIP WONDER WORK WORLD WITNESS Adult forums A Feast for the Soul What is the relationship between art and The Holy? This program year s non-contiguous series focuses on The Arts in several forms: poetry and prose, painting and illustration, sculpture and ceramics, music and theater. In addition, the forums will continue to feature speakers and topics of faith from near and far, including Orchard House in Concord and Cotopaxi in the land of eternal Equinox: Ecuador. Join us at the weekly adult forums and bring your creative inquiring self. The forums meet from 9:00 to 9:45 am on most Sundays, in the Undercroft. Professional childcare in the nursery. November 2 (Wonder): Monoprints Lonnie Harvey has been creating monoprints for more than 20 years. She grew up in rural Wisconsin, and studied art at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Wisconsin Madison. After moving to the Boston area in 1990, she took classes at the DeCordova Museum School, where monoprints became her primary focus. She lives with her family in Carlisle, and has her printmaking studio at the Umbrella Community Arts Center in Concord. Her work is inspired by nature: landscapes, still-lifes, and organic forms that are simple, yet contain complexities of color and texture much like those often overlooked in the natural world. She is inspired by places she has lived and visited, not only by their raw natural beauty, but also by the emotional responses they elicit. Lonnie approaches each work as if putting together a jigsaw puzzle; different components are fitted together to produce a final result that is exciting and not always predictable. Page 10

November 9 TBD November 16 (Witness): Diocesan Convention Come hear about the presentations, discussions, and actions of the 229th Convention of the Diocese of Massachusetts, held at St. Stephen's Memorial Church in Lynn on November 8. Trinity Clergy and Parish delegates will offer their impressions. November 23 (Wonder): Ceramic Art Finding one's own voice is opening one's self up to new ideas for expanding self-awareness and growth. That light goes on moment of an idea can be life-altering. It is the creative process, the inner voice, a muse. It is what feeds the soul and is preciously sought after for an artist. Forum presenter, Ronnie Gould, has found that enabling creativity is a mindful practice. She will talk about her work as a sculptor of ceramic art. Sharing methods and discoveries along her journey from finding clay as her art medium to expressing her deep connection with animals. Ronnie is a local artist whose animal sculptures have been exhibited by galleries and museums in the US and Europe. Her work is shown right here in Concord at the Lacoste Gallery on Main Street. November 30 and December 7 (Word) Word of the Lord: the Musical "Word of the Lord" the Musical. Well, not exactly. It is amazing, however, how much of scripture has been set to music. In two sessions, Trinity parishioner Jim Wood, will examine some of these musical settings of Holy Writ. The first session will focus on the obvious suspects Handel and Bach, with some assistance of Haydn. The second session will look at some more modern, and unusual, settings by Jean Francaix, Franz Schmidt, and, if time permits, Benjamin Britten and Igor Stravinsky. Page 11

Social ministry 3rd Annual Cooking Demonstration/Tasting For Maranyundo Scholarships This year s Cooking Demonstration and Tasting will be a fall event on Friday, November 7 th at 7PM at Barbara Peters and Ted Benzer s house, at 35 River Street, Concord. Sarah O Keefe, Trinity s in-house chef, is once again presenting an evening that will delight your palate and wow your senses. It is an instructed cooking demonstration that she helps to demystify gourmet cooking by talking her way through all the courses. She gives away all her tips and secrets on each of three courses and pairs wine with each course. Recipes and tips included so that you can impress your family and friends. We are delighted that our neighbors, Barbara and Ted (Dean Hall s old house) are inviting us into their newly renovated kitchen and home. Their house was on the Kitchen Tour and we are so very thankful they are willing to help us out for a second event for Trinity s outreach. Barbara told us she wants to be good neighbors and is intrigued with all that Trinity does. She said it looks like Trinity is a very busy place. Sign up in the Narthex on the poster near the center front door. Get there early to reserve your spot, there is a 50 person limit at $30/person. Page 12
