Please join us for refreshments and fellowship today! RECTOR S COLUMN October 21, 2018 Today s gospel passage offers a good example of what Jesus encountered as he prepared the apostles for their role in the early Church. On the journey to Jerusalem, James and his brother John approach the Lord with a suggestion that will advance their personal agenda. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. Jesus agrees to hear them out. Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left, to which Jesus raises an objection and his own question to them, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized? James and John affirm with a resounding We can. Indeed, they will. St. John Chrysostom reflected on their response and says that Jesus goes on to associate his followers with his own destiny: The Lord s way of asking questions is a lure to his listeners, and an exhortation. He does not ask them: Are you prepared to suffer death? or Are you prepared to spill your blood? His question is: Are you able to drink the cup?, and to encourage them, he adds: the cup that I drink. The thought that they are to drink the same cup as he will drink inspires a more generous response. He refers to his Passion as a baptism to show that all his sufferings will be a purification on behalf of the whole world. They answer: We are able. The zeal of his spirit provokes this response and though they do not realize what they are promising, they hope that by their answer their desire will be fulfilled. The Lord teaches us that he came to serve and that those who follow him are to do the same. The other ten Apostles overheard the exchange between Jesus, James and John, and became indignant at the brothers, prompting Jesus to instruct the Twelve on the meaning of discipleship. Service is the hallmark of those who follow the Lord. The disciple of Jesus is called to live a life of selfsacrifice. Do we? Monsignor Joseph Simon CATHEDRAL TOURS Tours of our beautiful church are offered following the noon Mass on Sunday, and at various times during the week (pending other events). 4 Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis WEEKLY THOUGHTS ON GIVING For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mk 10:45 If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from I want more to thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MEMBERSHIP Members of the Cathedral St. Vincent de Paul Society meet in the Rectory every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Members are committed to aiding fellow parishioners and neighbors with necessities such as food, clothing, utilities, and rent all in the context of the Christian imperative. 5 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 21, 2018 THE ROSARY MONTH October has long been time within the Church s life when the holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been prayed with special concentration and intention. The devotion of the Rosary has been a strength of Catholic Faith for centuries. It is the prayer of the little ones as well as the powerful. It is an open invitation to holiness by immersing oneself in the mysteries of Christ using the eyes and heart of His mother. Everyone is encouraged to pray the Rosary daily. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! TESTED IN EVERY WAY How blessed we are as Catholics to have such an extraordinary example of love and service in the person of Jesus Christ! The readings for this Sunday remind us just how selfless and loving our God is. Jesus was afflicted in every way, yet without sinning. He suffered the death of a criminal and bore all of our offenses and guilt. During His time on earth, He reminded us as disciples that we too would be tested and tried throughout our earthly pilgrimage and that we too would have to take up our cross daily to follow Him. A good question to ask ourselves this week is Where are we seeking to be the greatest in our own lives? Are we seeking self-aggrandizement in our work, our personal life, or our family life? Or are we instead embracing the cross of self-denial and willingly suffering afflictions so that others might experience authentic love and service? Acts of selfless love and uniting our sufferings to the cross of Christ are excellent ways of evangelizing others and showing them the essence of the Christian faith. For more on this and other topics, please visit archstl.org/dynamic. COME PRAY LECTIO DIVINA Lectio Divina is a reflective reading and meditation on specific Scripture passages. This centuries-old practice of prayer relies on the Holy Spirit to guide the heart to the deeper meaning that God wants to convey though his Word. A person reads a passage, pauses, and shares what word or thought touched their heart during the reading with others. As a group, we often read Scripture passages from the upcoming Sunday liturgy, greatly enhancing the Sunday Mass experience. Group meets Tuesdays, from 7-8:00 p.m. at the rectory. Contact Deacon John Stoverink at JohnStoverink@archstl.org for more info. PRAYING FOR THE SICK... It is our responsibility in the Lord to remember the sick, who are especially close to the Redeemer in their suffering. Domingo Yvanez Atok William H. Bachmann Julia Bailey Eric Berke Carmen Blumer Kathy Dodd Stephanie Gordon King McElroy Lenore Molloy Dorothy Quinn Sr. Patricia Sevik Carlton Smith Rose Teran Henry Thompson Richelle Weisbrod Susan Wells-Souza Dr. Carr Worland HELPERS OF GOD'S PRECIOUS INFANTS Remember to join us at the Cathedral Basilica on the third Saturday of each month for a pro-life Mass at 8:00 a.m., followed with a rosary procession to Planned Parenthood at Boyle and Forest Park. The next Mass is scheduled for Saturday, November DAYS FOR LIFE ADORATION The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity invite all to Our Lady of Guadalupe Convent, 4311 Forest Park Ave, each Monday during the month of October for Mass at 7:00 a.m., followed by Adoration until 11:30. All are welcome to join the Sisters in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament for an end to abortion. A THOUGHT ON THE SANCTITY OF LIFE Pray daily for the end to abortion, that all mothers and children experience the loving support of the Church community, and that all who suffer after abortion find healing and peace. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, Another Look at Abortion INFANT BAPTISM According to the mind of the Church, parents are obliged to see that infants are baptized within the first weeks after birth. As soon as possible after the birth, or even before it, parents should request the sacrament for their child and are to be properly instructed in preparation for it. Godparents are also encouraged to attend baptismal preparation before the child is born. If you are a registered parishioner who is or is about to become a parent or godparent, contact Laura Voegelie at to schedule a baptism or to register for our next baptismal preparation class on Tuesday, October 23. 5
