EYEGLASS DRIVE Today, and on the first Sunday of every month, "The Respectacle Project, an eyeglass recycling program, is accepting donations of quality used eyeglasses. Please place donations in the baskets near the sanctuary at the side aisles. Thank you! RECTOR S COLUMN November 4, 2018 Last November the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis inaugurated Grateful and Generous: Serving God and Neighbor. The goal of this stewardship appeal was to increase the offertory collection, something the parish had not requested of parishioners for a few years. The response to our appeal last fall was most heartening. A year into that appeal, we can report that the Sunday offertory since last November has increased by 20%. This weekend marks the beginning of the second year of this appeal and again we are seeking an increase in the offertory donation, a major component of parish revenues. Each year the parish experiences the impact of cost of living increases and seeks to address those increased costs through revenues supplied by parishioners. As November, the month of Thanksgiving, begins, the Parish Finance Council asks parishioners to increase their weekly, monthly or annual gift to the Cathedral Basilica. Next weekend, November 10-11, we will conduct an in-pew sign-up campaign for increased offertory donations. Each family and donor will receive a commitment card in the U.S. mail this week. Please bring that card to Mass next weekend. During Mass, I will ask you to renew your sacrificial gift intention to the parish. This Sunday s scripture readings summarize the bond that exists between God and his people. The words of the First Commandment guide us to God. Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The Second Commandment is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. All that we do at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis stems from these Two Commandments. Our goals are to worship God and to serve our neighbor. Your presence and support help the priests and staff in fulfilling our parish mission of being Grateful and Generous: Serving God and Neighbor. Monsignor Joseph Simon 3

4 Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis NOVEMBER'S PRAYER On All Saints Day, the Church acknowledged the whole company of heaven, our brothers and sisters of every age who have negotiated life in this world and successfully embraced the life of heaven with God. On All Souls Day, the Church prayed for all our brothers and sisters who have died. They are on the way to heaven but first must pass through the purgative and purifying demand of absolute love, which is called purgatory." To this end, a Book of The Dead has been placed in the All Souls Chapel, located in the rear of the church, and will remain there throughout the month of November. All are invited to inscribe the names of family, friends, and loved ones who have died and require our prayer. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MEMBERSHIP Members of the Cathedral St. Vincent de Paul Society meet in the Rectory every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Members are committed to aiding fellow parishioners and neighbors with necessities such as food, clothing, utilities, and rent all in the context of the Christian imperative. If interested in becoming a member or in learning more about the Society and our Conference, please leave a message on the SVDP HotLine at DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS Today we hear the great Shema that our Jewish brothers and sisters hold so dearly. It is the message that God alone is the Lord and that we are to worship, love, and serve Him with all that we are. It is beautiful in this reading from Deuteronomy how Moses teaches so clearly that obeying the commandments and statues of the Lord is what keeps us free and enables us to live long lives (if not long here on earth, at least long and prosperous in heaven). Placing God at the center of our existence in all things is what gives us true freedom and joy, two experiences that can never be found apart from one another. People who are enslaved to sin are not joyful; those who are joyful are joyful because they have found their freedom in Jesus Christ. This week, let us prayerfully consider if we are truly free and joyful and what is preventing us from those experiences. How can we love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength? For more on this and other topics, please visit archstl.org/dynamic. WEEKLY THOUGHTS ON GIVING And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. Mk 12:33 Of all the gifts that God gives us the one He wants the most is our heart. He wants us to share out of love, not out of obligation. Using our talent in parish ministry and contributing money to support our parish mission is important, but it s more important to spend time in prayer with God daily and discern how He is calling us to be generous with all of our gifts. Not just the visible ones, but the invisible ones like love, mercy and forgiveness. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SUNDAY The St. Louis Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society celebrates their Fourth Annual St. Vincent de Paul Sunday this weekend. The Cathedral Basilica Conference is participating by collecting contributions of personal hygiene items (e.g., shampoo, toothpaste, and toothbrushes) as well as cleaning supplies (e.g., paper towels, soap, and detergent). These are essential items not covered by food stamps, and our clients often can t afford to buy them. All items collected will be distributed to the poor in the Archdiocese. Vincentians are stationed in the vestibule at all Masses this weekend to receive your donations. Your ongoing support and generosity remain vital to their mission of reaching out in Christian charity to those in need. ST. PATRICK CASSEROLE PROGRAM Casseroles and other offerings collected by volunteers of the St. Patrick Casserole Program provides one week of dinners for the Women s Shelter, and one night of dinners for the Men s Alumni Club. The next collection will be Thursday, November 8, at Boland Hall, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information, please call Skip or Nicky Batchelor at or the rectory office at SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM... Any adult wishing to volunteer in parish activities or ministries that include children, or who plan to volunteer at an Archdiocesan school in the fall, must be fully compliant with the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Program. For more information, please contact Mary Ann Fox at Page 4

EARLY ALERT FOR THANKSGIVING MASS On Thursday, November 22, our nation observes a day of Thanksgiving. On this day, all are encouraged to mark with gratefulness our rich heritage of material blessings and national freedoms. Christians the world over recognize that the supreme thanksgiving is perfectly expressed for us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in His Redemptive Sacrifice through the Eucharist, the sacrifice which makes the Church. In gratefulness for all blessings bestowed upon us as a people of faith, please join us for our special Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 22. This will be the only Mass offered at the Cathedral Basilica on Thanksgiving Day. YOU CAN HELP CARRY THE BURDEN Our Parish is blessed with significant demographic diversity. While many of us live comfortably, a significant number within our Parish boundaries are not nearly so fortunate. The Poor Box, located near the main aisle in the rear of the church, is the primary source of funding for the assistance provided by the Cathedral Chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. A LASTING GIFT Looking for a special gift to memorialize a loved one or celebrate a wedding or anniversary? Consider a commemorative brick in the Garden!
