HANAMATSURI April is the time of Hanamatsuri, a time we annually celebrate and observe the birthday of Siddhartha Gautama. The baby Buddha statue with its right hand pointing to the heavens and the left hand pointing to the earth proclaims in a resounding way, Above the earth and below the heavens, I alone am honored! This moment of joyful proclamation with sweet rain and heavenly flowers showering him affirms the realization of Siddhartha s Buddhahood, not only for himself, but also affirms the fundamental Buddhahood of all beings. It is the shout of absolute spiritual freedom and liberation for himself and for all of humanity in past, present, and future. It is the joyous birth cry in the enlightenment of all living beings. This, in my estimation, is the spiritual gift of danaparamita, the perfection of selflessness, the Buddha endows to all living beings. This shout continues to resound even today as we seek a deeper meaning and fulfillment in a world fraught with the three toxins of anger, greed, and ignorance. This spiritually imbued life journey is often fortuitous and complex. It expresses the unique karmic struggles and challenges of each person. Our spiritual life, while simple and graceful when lived wholly, does not emerge readily or easily. The journey engages our whole being intellectually, emotionally, and volitionally. So too was Shinran Shonin s spiritual journey for meaning in 12 th Century Japan. Over 1500 years had passed from the time of Gautama life and ministry in 600 BCE. But Gautama s dharma teachings of Amida Buddha as the pure workings of Eternal Light (Wisdom) and Eternal Life (Compassion) deeply awakened Shinran to the unconditional faith embodied in Amida Buddha s Name Namu-Amida-Butsu. This awakening triggered Shinran s joyful birth cry in Namu-Amida-Butsu. He wholly embraced and was embraced by the enlightened workings of Amida Buddha s wisdom and compassion. Namu-Amida-Butsu was Shinran s joyful birth cry connecting him directly to Gautama s joy of birth. Our constraints of time and space does not impede this birth cry in this absolute moment of receiving Amida Buddha Eternal Light and Life. And, in the gratitude born of this awakening the clarity and purpose of our life-direction into the world of Pure Land, Nirvana, settles into our heart as unconditional faith. Hanamatsuri. The spiritual celebration of a newly awakened life within the workings of Amida s eternal light of wisdom and eternal life of compassion resonates with unbounded joy and gratitude, freedom and liberation. Namu-Amida-Butsu. Metta, Rev. Will Masuda April,

Shigemi Okamoto Memorial Lecture March 4 5, 2017 Wailuku Hongwanji Mission Guest Speaker: Bishop Tatsuya Aoki, Bishop of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada & Resident Minister of Vancouver Buddhist Temple SUMMARY NOTES BY SHARON HIGUCHI Previous to his lecture, Bishop Aoki was given some ques ons to respond to by the Wailuku Sangha. He said he prepared his answers through research and by talking to people. He prepared a PowerPoint presenta on inser ng a lot of personal anecdotes and cuts from movies to highlight his lecture. The combina on of his warm personality, intellect, computer skills and open sharing of his journey on the Buddhist path made for an excellent Nembutsu seminar. Some things covered: How many Buddhas have there been? Only one, the Awakened One, Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The Buddha said the Dharma is like a ra, useful for crossing over but not for holding onto. Learn to let go. If you don t understand something, let it go and o en, at a later stage in your life, when you are ready, you will understand. Who decides when you achieve Buddhahood? No one decides; you can decide. You can also decide if there is a restric on from Buddhist imagery such as a ta oo or jewelry. It s up to YOU. What is the goal of Jodo Shinshu? The goal is to live with gra tude and apprecia on. What should your approach to a Dharma lecture be? Empty yourself first. Do not be a ached to the messenger or to the message. The messenger is poin ng to the Dharma so that is where you should look. You should ask What does it mean? ques ons rather than yes/no or true/false ques ons. The main thing is to use what you learn. Prac ce it. Is a belief in reincarna on and karma necessary to be a Buddhist? Can we know whether a person will be reborn in samsara? In Buddhism, there is no belief in God. The emphasis is on ac on rather than a metaphysical belief. You can a ain enlightenment without God. Happiness cannot stand alone. Because we have unhappiness, we can be fully happy. Every day is a good day. We have to make it so. Pain is inevitable but suffering is op onal. How much we suffer depends on yourself. What is the essence of Buddhism? Do no evil deed and engage in deeds of kindness. This is easy for a child to understand but difficult for an 80 year old to act upon. What is the future of Jodo Shinshu? Why is it important to belong to a Jodo Shinshu temple? 1) Because there are capable ministers 2) Unlike a business, you do not get something by being a member. Belonging is not self benefi ng, but benefits others. You don t join to gain something, you have already received the 3 treasures, so one joins in apprecia on. Shinran is like Forrest Gump. Watch the movie (again) and reflect on this simile. The difference between Zen and Jodo Shinshu is that Jodo Shinshu is not a sect, it is Buddhism. Shinran never said that the Nembutsu is the path for everyone. The Pure Land is a state of mind, not a place. Like the Buddhist analogy of the blind men and the elephant, we all see a picture only from our limited perspec ves. In talking about the death of his father and his good friends who died young, Bishop Aoki said that the point is not how long one s life journey is, but that we can enjoy the journey because we have some place to return to: the Pure Land. In Jodo Shinshu, a passing is a me the departed is teaching us about impermanence. What is the reason of death? Because we are born. The Pure Land is not the same as see you in heaven. It is not the same as this world. If we see loved ones, we will also see those we don t want to see. There are no dis nc ons in the Pure Land. Con nued on Page 8 5

DHARMA SCHOOL Sunday, February 26, 2017 By: Kiyo Welcome! What a delight it was to see the front pews on Dharma School Sunday filled with children and their parents. This is a heartening vision of the future of our temple. A er a short service, the children proceeded to the their respec ve classes in the social hall, the li le ones, from pre school to 1 st grade gathered with Mrs. Nagoshi, and the older students met with Mrs. Masuda. This month s topic focused on the Eigh old Path and how to put it into prac ce. Cookies, Bite Size Life Lessons by Amy Krouse Rosenthal was read to begin the lesson. In this book, key vocabulary words are highlighted to address those manners needed to have a happy me making cookies together. The children readily related to this cookie metaphor so it was not difficult to make the dharma connec on with the Eigh old Path. The li le ones were busy in an ac vity pinning learned new words on the Eigh old Path wheel, and the upper grade students engaged in a lively discussion about their interpreta on of the words. We found that many of the words were descrip ons of Right Conduct and Right Speech, such as compassionate, pessimis c, op mis c, greedy, generous and honest. As the culmina ng ac vity, the upper grade group made marshmallow treats for the Dharma School students, keeping in mind the key vocabulary words of the Eigh old Path. They did cooperate, took turns, and did a fine job making the recipe, but, oops, forgot about clean up un l they saw Mrs. Kosaka washing the utensils. They thanked her and then did their part, too. This ac vity was a fun, delicious and valuable prac ce of the Eigh old Path. We learned that we must prac ce Right Speech, Right Conduct and Right Thought in order that they become a natural part of our behavior. We will con nue to prac ce sharing, not always think me first, and to say 6

DID YOU KNOW (From me to me we come across ques ons from our members regarding this or that about our temple as well as the dharma. We will find the answer for you.) Why do we have memorial services? Hoji (Dharma ma er) was originally a general term for any ritual observance. It now refers specifically to a memorial service for members of a given family or clan. Extended members of a family and some mes close family friends gather at a temple or home in memory of a deceased member of the family. Following the service, the group will o en go out to lunch or dinner or serve a pot luck meal at the home, renewing and strengthening family es. This custom, along with the Buddhist emphasis on death observances over birth observances, has resulted in the understanding that death is a natural occurrence, no ma er how disagreeable it may seem to us. An important by product of this custom is reinforcing family es with members beyond one s immediate family and a sense of con nuity from genera on to genera on. Although every seventh day un l the 49th is some mes s ll observed in the United States, observing the 7th and 49th day is the more common prac ce. The 7th day Memorial Service is normally observed at the temple immediately following the burial or crema on service. Flowers and a box of manju are brought as an offering by the family and the private service is conducted with each person burning incense. The 49thday is the next Hoji usually observed. 7

Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii Phone: (808) Fax: (808) STATEMENT BY HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAII OFFICE OF THE BISHOP AND COMMITTEE ON SOCIAL CONCERNS ON THE PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDER ON REFGREES AND IMMIGRATION On January 27, 2017, the Office of the President of the United States of America issued an execu ve order that severely restricts immigra on from seven predominantly Muslim countries of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The order also suspends all refugee admission to the United States for 120 days and bars all Syrian refugees indefinitely. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii expresses its concern that such ac on, temporary or otherwise, appears to ban a class of people based on religion and/or na onality and is not consistent with the values upon which the United States of America is founded. Such ac on which applies in a blanket manner to those of the Muslim Tradi on raises fear that history is repea ng itself. Many people of our own Buddhist religious tradi on, because of the ethnicity and na onality of a large por on of our members, experienced discrimina on and incarcera on following an execu ve order during WW II. While we understand the importance of reducing terroris c threats through stricter screening procedures for entry into the United States, our government should not isolate and target en re groups based on religion, ethnicity, and/or na onality. It is the belief of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii that our own security as a na on is inextricably linked with the security of peoples around the world. Our policies should help relieve the suffering of all people, including those of Muslim majority countries. Guided by Wisdom and Compassion, may we as individuals, communi es, and a na on refrain from ac ons that cause divisiveness and instead act in ways that lead to peace, harmony, and safety for all peoples. Summary of Bishop Tatsuya Aoki Lecture...Con nued from page 5... Pay a en on to/be mindful of simple acts performed in the temple such as the offering of incense. All temples have similar incense boxes. For example the two dragons, one with open mouth and one closed, represent how we walk on the Buddhist path from beginning to end, from life to death. The lion symbolizes the Buddha s teachings. The three legs represent the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. Why don t all sects work together because we are all struggling and can be stronger in unity? Bishop Aoki said even if we join together, he thinks we would all separate again because we all have chosen different paths. by Sharon Higuchi 8

TROOP 18 NEWS Quinton Uradomo s Eagle Project By Bryson Uchima During this past weekend, Quinton Uradomo worked on his Eagle Project at Makawao Hongwanji Mission. His project was to build a sidewalk along the back side of the social hall. The construction took place on Friday, March 17 through Sunday, March 19. Everyone worked really hard and in the end, got the project done successfully. Day 1: The first day of the project was probably the hardest out of the three. Basically, Day 1 was preparation day. On that day we had to remove a large area where the concrete would be poured in the next day. This was mostly done manually with shovels and other various tools. This took up the whole day from 8:00 a.m to about 6:00 p.m. After those 9 hours we were prepared for Day 2, pouring day. Day 2: The second day of the project was more on the easier side of the three. Day 2 was pouring day. Before the cement truck came, we touched up on a few things and obviously prepared for the pouring of the cement. We didn t do much that day because workers came to help us. Even though we didn t do much we definitely learned a lot from the workers who probably did this a million times before. After the cement was poured it was leveled out, smoothed out, then finished up with a broom. Day 3: The third and final day was mostly back filling the spots where we dug out dirt. After doing that, there was a lot of dirt in the areas where we dug out grass and back filled. So, we got the grass from Day 1 and tried our best to patch up the spots where there was dirt. We watered the grass, cleaned up the sidewalk, and cleaned our tools. We were done with the project and the sidewalk was a success. See photos on next page. SHALL WE SAY THE NEMBUTSU? Le ers of Rennyo : Shonin Ichiryu no Sho The Tradi on of Shinran Shonin (From Shin Buddhism Transla on Series, Hongwanji Interna onal Center, Japan Pub., 2000) What is taught in the tradi on of Shinran Shonin is that the entrus ng heart is essen al. For when we abandon various prac ces and take refuge in Amida with singleness of heart, our birth in the Pure Land is se led by the Buddha through the inconceivable Vow Power. The state we thus a ain is described as with awakening of a single thought of entrus ng, we join those who are in the stage of the truly se led. Recita on of the nembutsu therea er should be understood to be the nembutsu as an expression of gra tude for the Tathagatha s benevolence for se ling our birth in the Pure Land. Humbly and respec ully. 9

THE 110 TH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CONTINUES WITH GOOD NEWS!!! Thanks to your generous donations, we are already meeting some of our project goals! But we still need more help! The repair and repaving of the main driveway, the major improvement for of our 110 th Celebration project, has already been completed! In addition, new chair racks for the hall and temple have already been purchased. We hope the long-overdue painting and repairs to the social hall can be scheduled to take place in a few months after fumigation of the buildings are completed. In addition, plans for a new driveway from the entrance gate to the front of the temple with some paved parking stalls are in the works. This can commence once the capital campaign funds are realized. As we work together to keep our temple a beautiful and safe place to listen to the Buddha Dharma, it is our hope that more people will be able to hear the teaching of the Nembutsu. Makawao Hongwanji s 110 th Anniversary theme is Keeping the Heart of the Buddha Dharma. Makawao Hongwanji Help Makawao Hongwanji Buddhist Temple keep alive the heart of the Buddha Dharma by working together to keep Buddhism viable in our community. By acting through Kindness, Peace, Compassion, and Generous Giving, our efforts to maintain our temple and provide service for those who wish to follow the Shinshu path, can continue for a peaceful world. Our goal is to raise $110,000 for our 110 th Anniversary Celebration. To quote Bishop Eric Matsumoto at the 2016 Giseikai Conference, The Dharma will always survive because of its universal truth.
