2 BRIGHTER ENDING, CLEARER BEGINNING As the end of the year approaches quickly and quietly, I see the many wonderful moments we experienced and shared with our Makawao Dharma friends. One of the highlights is the 110 th year celebra on of the Makawao Buddhist Temple and reflec ng on the many Dharma friends from the past and present who cherish and celebrate our temple as the symbol of their spiritual refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. All the events throughout the year, for me, give meaning to this fundamental commitment and dedica on to the Three Refuges. I firmly believe that when the Three Refuges are alive and well; illumina ng our heart and mind, our Makawao Buddhist Temple community evolves meaningfully in faith and devo on, commitment and dedica on for the be erment of the Buddhist way in Maui. I am reminded of an anecdote about a person who was browsing at a temple garage sale somewhat akin to our annual garage sale. While walking among the many people who were also browsing, his eyes were drawn to a beau ful vase almost hidden amongst all the items for sale. He was cap vated and filled with delight. He bought it and hurriedly took it home. The vase was so beau ful that it made his living room look dull, drab and unappealing. So he bought a gallon of bright paint, a bright pa erned carpet, and even stripped down and varnished the furniture. Because of the beauty of the vase, the whole room was totally transformed. In a similar way, when the light and beauty of Amida Buddha s workings of wisdom and compassion enters and brightens our heart, the areas of our life in need of a en on become quite obvious and clear. And in this oneness and wholeness with Amida Buddha I realize too that I am more deeply a person of ignorance and foolishness than I ever thought I was! The closer and more in mate I become with the workings of Amida Buddha the more obvious the contrast becomes. With the clarity of this awareness, taking refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha again affirms my resolve to live with faith and trust, devo on and commitment to the meaning and joy of the Nembutsu way. What is the difference with these strands of beads? Some people call them nenju and others call them juzu. Are they the same? In some Buddhist tradi ons and other religious tradi ons, the nenju or juzu is used for coun ng how many mes a person recites something. In the Chinese characters for juzu, ju means counter and zu means beads. However, in our Shin tradi on, since we do not use the beads as an aid for medita on or chan ng, we should refer to it as a nen ju : nen (mindful or thinking) + ju (beads) = beads to keep us mindful of the Buddha. 5 Hi. Hope you are all happy and well. Last month our temple hosted the Maui Hongwanji Council Nembutsu Seminar. About 50 were in a endance. Our resident minister, Rev. Dr. Will Masuda, invited Rev. Dr. Nobuo Haneda, Director of Maida Center of Buddhism in Berkeley, California, as our guest speaker. The messages that he delivered were very enlightening. On November 11 th (Veterans Day), I a ended the Welcome Back Home dinner for the Vietnam Veterans. About 150 veterans a ended with their wives and friends to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the ending of the war. Although I was not a combat infantryman, I was In Country for a year of duty. At first, I wasn t planning on going but my friend said, lets go. My unit supported the troops in the fields with supplies necessary for them to do their job. I went to the dinner to lend support to them. Many of them are now suffering from the effects of Agent Orange... cancer, diabe c, and PTSD. Some of my high school classmates who served in Nam are now being treated with some form of cancer. On November 14 and 15, a couple of us (sons and daughters of the 100 th Infantry Ba alion, and the 442 nd RTC), a ended the 10 th Graders classes at Kamehameha School (Maui Campus) to share stories of our dads experiences during World War II in Italy and France. This was my 5 th me going there. Every year that I a end classes, I meet students that have rela ves who were in the 100th, 442 nd, or MIS (Military Intelligent Services). You may be wondering, Why are we going over to Kamehameha School?. Well, did you know that prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, some of them were part Hawaiians with Japanese last names? In Hawaii, there were two Army Reserve units prior to the war. Many of them were of Japanese ancestry. They were released of their du es of fear that they may fight alongside with the enemy. Later, they were allowed to return to the Army to fight for their country They became the One Puka Puka Ba alion (100 th Inf. Bn.). Later, an all volunteer unit was formed. The 442 nd Regimental Combat Team, which was made up of 2 nd genera on Japanese Americans born in Hawaii and the young men that volunteered from the internment camps on the mainland. This year, the 100 th Inf. Bn. is celebra ng their 75 th Anniversary. Next year, the 442 nd RTC will be celebra ng their 75 th Anniversary. Photo displays and other memorabilia are being shown at the Maui Nisei Veterans Educa on Center here on Maui. If able, please go and see the display. Many of the men were Buddhist or of Buddhist families. On October 22nd, Makawao Hongwanji celebrated its 110th Anniversary. How wonderful this event was. This could not have happened if it wasn t for the first Buddhist Minister from Japan who came to Hawaii to propagate Jodo Shin Shu Buddhism..and from the support of the Sangha that con nues to spread the teachings of Shinran. For this, I am truly grateful. I encourage all of you to a end our Buddhist seminars. To hear and learn about the Buddha Dharma..and to support all those that bring the teachings to our temple. Namo Amida Butsu. Floyd Don't forget to remit your 2017 membership dues by November 15, Dues for 2017 are $240/year or $20/month. Next year, 2018, dues will be $300/year or $25/month. 7 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii Phone: (808) Fax: (808) Web: Message From The Gomonshu: It is my pleasure to be able to visit Makawao Hongwanji Mission, and join all of you here today for the first time as Monshu. On this occasion, I would like to express my sincere respect to you and our predecessors who had emigrated from Japan to Hawaii, despite such challenging times, building temples, and having transmitted the Dharma and supporting the temples until today. The Jodo Shinshu teaching expounded by Shinran Shonin about eight hundred years ago became known and supported by more and more people during Rennyo Shonin s tenure due to his skillful propagational efforts. After the Meiji era, the teaching was spread beyond the national borders to the rest of the world, therefore making it possible for us to meet here today. This global propagation is realized because the Jodo Shinshu teaching can essentially serve as anyone s spiritual foundation without regard to time and place. Being aware of Amida Buddha s great compassion embracing every one of us, we are enabled to accept each incident we come across as a great opportunity, and thus we are able to live our lives energetically even though life itself is filled with a variety of limitations. However, we cannot help but stop thinking of only our own desire or convenience and find it difficult to accept things as they are. That is why it is important for us to continue listening to the Dharma and understanding how Amida Buddha s working reaches us. Through such efforts, our views and ways of living gradually changes. In conclusion, I hope that every one of you who have gathered here today will continue your efforts in listening to and sharing of the Dharma with as many others as possible. SHINSHU PLEDGE 1. I take my refuge in the Vow of the Buddha. Reci ng his Sacred Name, I will live through life with strength and serenity. 2. I adore the light of the Buddha. I will put my effort in my work with self reflec on and gra tude. 3. I follow the Teachings of the Buddha. Discerning the Right Path, I will spread the True Dharma. 4. I rejoice in the Compassion of the Buddha. I will respect and help others and do my best for the welfare of humankind. 7

There was a general mee ng with reports & discussion on goals of the BWA, 2018 officers were installed & a memorial service was held. Embrace Change Open Communica on was the theme as we learned about Islam from our guest speaker Emna Maksud. In the panel discussion with two genera ons of Muslim women, we heard about how important their religion is to them and how it affects their daily lives, & how their perspec ves of life and desires for their family are universal to all women. When they did a hijab (head covering) demonstra on and tradi onal wedding presenta on, the men present were asked to leave the room. The desserts and food shared was delicious; we only wish we had had more me to share our cultures. This year we welcomed new members Christy Vale, Denise Fleetham, & Sherri Okuni. We honor and give thanks to our deceased members Ruth Magarifuji, Narue Nitahara, Sachiko Smith, &Gladys Ushijima. In the spirit of universal sisterhood, each of us is part of the world peace movement by dispelling our ignorance through Wisdom and Compassion, and compassionately sharing our understanding with others.
