OBON The origins of Obon can be traced to the Ullambana Sutra, which relates the story of Mahamaudgalyayana (Mogallana in Pali), the most gi ed of Sakyamuni Buddha s disciples in the area of extraordinary sense percep ons. The story teaches the important of hearing the Buddha s teachings and observing the precepts. In realizing the compassion of the Buddha, Mahamaudgalyayana was so overjoyed that he clapped his hands and danced about. This is said to have been the beginning of Bon Odori (tradi onal Japanese dances on Obon Day). Obon, therefore, being an occasion for rejoicing in the awakening offered by the Buddha, is an opportunity to express gra tude not only to ancestors, but to all who have passed on. Therefore, it is o en referred to as Kangi e, Gathering of Joy.
2 2017 Obon Reflection Some 10 years ago, our family, including our son, his wife, son and daughter visited Japan to introduce our grandchildren to our relatives in Hiroshima. Our grandson was then 7 years old and our granddaughter was 3 years old. Our short, three day visit was warmly received and welcomed by our Hiroshima family. We visited my grandparents gravesite on the hillside behind the neighborhood temple. We washed and cleaned their gravestone, placed fresh flowers on the pedestal, and burned the always soothing incense. We joined our hands in reverence (gassho), chanted the Juseige together, and ended the short service with our grandson leading us in the recitation of the Golden Chain. A few years prior to our visit, I had taken a portion of my mother s ashes to be placed at this gravesite with her parents. I imagined my mother s and grandparents smiling countenance in seeing all of us together to remember and express our love and appreciation for them. It was a warm and sacred moment for all of us to reflect on our deep karmic ties of love and gratitude for our eternal bond as family. During this annual Obon season, I am again transported to the dharma narrative of Mogallana s joyous awakening and gratitude for his mother s many untold sacrifices, which he learned through his transforming guidance and conversation with Sakyamuni Buddha. Mogallana s narrative speaks to me of the untold sacrifices my parents made while acquiring countless karmic sufferings for the sake of their children myself and my siblings; so that we would have as many opportunities as possible to live a meaningful, gratifying and fulfilling life as possible. I wish I had the wherewithal and insight to thank them when they were still alive, for their influence which led my life to the gate of the Buddha Dharma. I realize each day it is never too late to express my appreciation and gratitude; I need only to say Namu-Amida-Butsu. Obon is truly a time to reflect deeply on the many karmic sacrifices of parents, family, teachers and others have made so that our lives can be lived more deeply and gratefully for the life we ve received. And in that realization, with the unconditional affirmation we receive through Amida Buddha s enduring wisdom and compassion, the jewel of the Dharma we call Namu-Amida-Butsu express our shared life of thankfulness and happiness with family, friends, and others. In the spirit of the late Mrs. Mitsuyo Makinodan: I say goodbye to the old home Of karmic suffering; Now I live in the (true life of) Namu-Amida-Butsu. Palms together in gassho, Rev. William Masuda July,

5 Right, Wrong, Who Knows? Last month we had our first Sangha Town Hall Mee ng of the year (Sunday, May 28, 2017) a er our Dharma Sunday Service. The purpose of the mee ng was to inform our temple members what is going on at our Council mee ngs. Two topics: First, who will be our next residence minister a er Rev. Will Masuda, and his lovely wife, Kiyo, contract is up come next February. Second, we discussed the development of a rental unit on our peach lot. With the declining of membership and the high cost of maintaining our ac ve temple, we are inves ng into the future. I remember years ago that we had a Sangha Membership mee ng discussing whether we should purchase the Masusako Property, the property adjacent to our temple. There were ques ons Where the money coming from?, Why are we purchasing a large property for parking only?, We are a temple, not a developer ves ng temple s money in real estate. Well, we purchased the adjacent property. We purchased the property by selling the Kula property as well as the Pauwela Hongwanji temple property. The temple officers at that me looked at the property as to the possibility of leasing or developing the front por on of the property with commercial rental units to help sustain the future of our temple. Was the ac on Right, Wrong, Who Knows? We planted peach trees around the perimeter of the vacant lot. For the past 9 years, we have been harves ng the fruits to make our delicious pickle peach products as one of our major fundraiser. As the volunteers who harvest and produce the pickle peach age, the ques on is how long can we con nue doing this money making project? The Council decided to develop a residence rental unit on the back por on of our Peach Tree Lot. The net income generated from the rental unit (s) will help relieve the temple with its financial woes and for the Sangha to con nue listening to the Dharma. Right, Wrong, Who Knows? Floyd MHM COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS June 11, 2017 Old Business: 110th Anniversary: Invita ons will be mailed out to our general membership, individual and corporate donors, other Buddhist temples/churches ministers and their presidents.
