1 The Gods and Greek Tragedy* What should we make of the Greek gods? They lead human beings into terrible crimes and excruciating suffering, while the tragic dramas that result make us wonder at their incomparable humanity. Perhaps they have something to teach us even now. We ll read Aeschylus Agamemnon and Prometheus Bound, along with Sophocles Oedipus the King. Our aim will be to determine what the tragic poets had in mind and who the gods might be. Instructor: Richard Dworin, MA, taught Greek epic poetry, tragedy, history and philosophy in adult seminars at the Newberry Library in Chicago. He currently teaches philosophy courses at Bellarmine University. HMAN 433 / 5 Saturdays / Sept. 25 Oct. 23 / 10 a.m. noon / $89 ($99 after Sept. 18) Exploring Germany s Rich History* Kingdoms, empires, monarchies and dictators have impacted the rich history of Germany. Starting with the Holy Roman Empire, we ll trace Germany s evolution and development from a small kingdom into a world power. Instructor: William Schrader, MA, Ph.D., is a retired Professor of History from Tennessee Technological University. HMAN 432 / 5 Tuesdays / Oct Nov. 16 / 7-9 p.m. / $89 ($99 after Oct. 12)

This walking tour of selected sections will focus on tombstone symbolism and some of the unique historic personalities interred within the grounds. It will also feature a discussion of the wide range of trees and plantings of Cave Hill - both those flowering in nature and those etched in stone. Guide: Clyde F. Crews, Ph.D., is a Louisville historian, priest and professor. HMAN 130 / Sunday / Oct. 24 / 1:30 4 p.m. / $35 ($45 after Oct. 17) Lock of Ages: A Guided tour of McAlpine Locks at the Falls of the Ohio At one time, the Falls of the Ohio was the most serious obstruction to navigation on the 981-mile Ohio River. Since the early 1800s, the US Army Corps of Engineers has undertaken a series of projects to provide safe and efficient navigation at the Falls. Take a guided tour of the newest completed project the 1200 lock chamber. Learn interesting information about the history of the river and the Falls area.
