Barbra was a long time member of the Simi Noontime Club. She now works in Moorpark at Tender Loving Heart Hospice Foundation and has now joined our Club. She is also the Mayor Pro-tem of Simi Valley. 2 Page 2 The Rotary Wheel An EMPIRE Christmas Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the skies, Air defenses were up, with electronic eyes. Empire pilots were nestled in ready-room beds, While enemy silhouettes danced in their heads. Every jet on the apron, each SAM in its tube, was triply redundant, linked to the Blue Cube. Radar and AWACS gave coverage so dense that nothing that flew could slip our defense. When out of the klaxon arose such a clatter I dashed to the screen to see what was the matter; I increased the gain and then, quick as a flash, Fine tuned the filters to damp out the hash. And there found the source of the warning we'd heeded an incoming blip, with eight escorts preceded. "Alert status red!" went the word down the wire, As we gave every system the codes that meant "FIRE!" On Aegis! Up Patriot, Phalanx and Hawk, scramble our fighters--let's send the whole flock. Launch decoys and missiles, use chaff by the yard! Get the kitchen sink up! Call the National Guard! They turned toward the target, moved and converged. Till the tracks on the radar all finally merged, the sky was lit up with a demonic light, As the foe met his fate in the high arctic night. Then we sent out reconnaissance to look for debris, Yet all that they found, both on land and on sea Were some toys, a red hat, a charred left leather boot, Broken sleigh bells, white hair, and a deer's parachute. Now - it isn't quite Christmas, with Saint Nick shot down. There are unhappy kids in each village and town. For the Spirit of Christmas can't hope to evade All the web of defenses we've so carefully made. But a crash program's on: Working hard, - Night and Day, All the elves are constructing a radar-proof sleigh. So let's wait for next Christmas, in cheer and in good health, For the future has hope: Santa's coming by stealth! With best wishes for a Merry Christmas signed THE EMPEROR.

3 Page 3 The Rotary Wheel Please bear with us as we attempt to get caught up with your weekly Rotary Wheel. November brought one of our more interesting speakers. The Santa Anita Bugler T he honorable sixteenth speaker trumpeting the message of THE evil Emperor was the Benevolent Bugler from the Santa Anita horse and chariot race track. The Benevolent Bugler first played his life history to the crowd and mentioned how he started out his career as a teacher. He mentioned that he just was not cut out to brainwash brats and push parents to accept the word of THE Emperor so he instead turned to honking a horn. The Benevolent Bugler then began to trumpet tunes to communicate messages with music. He naturally started out with the official music of THE Emperor which was the death march song from Star Wars which pleased THE evil Emperor immensely. The Benevolent Bugler also honked Happy Birthday to Rick Tate and Cliff Williams as the masses cheered out condolences due to their old age! Next the Benevolent Bugler asked anyone to shout out a country name and he said he would play its national anthem. Scott Farrenkopf blurted out "Brazil" and sure enough the Benevolent Bugler knew the anthem and played it! This angered THE Emperor since he felt passionate that only his "Death March" should be played as an official anthem. Finally, questions were shouted out to the Benevolent Bugler. A peon asked the Benevolent Bugler if he ever used a mute. He said yes. Quickly a roar rang out from the masses as they all shouted, "Can we borrow your mute to place in the mouth of THE Emperor?" Following this question another rang out asking if the Benevolent Bugler could let THE Emperor to try and toot the trumpet. Only the Almighty Walt knows in what orifice of THE Emperor that bugle might end up with the physical assistance of the crowd. g{x VÉâÜà ]xáàxü The Peanut Gallery says, Is our Court Jester getting a bit cocky?? The Emperor might just put that MUTE to work on the Jester. Either end would work fine.

5 Page 5 The Rotary Wheel A Story Behind The Four-Way Test By Darrell Thompson, Rotary Club Of Morro Bay as edited by Jim Lewis M ore than 60 years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, a U.S. Rotarian devised a simple, four-part ethical guideline that has been embraced and popularized by Rotary International. The Four-Way Test stands as one of the organization's hallmarks. It may very well be one of the most famous statements of the 20th century. Herbert J. Taylor, author of the Test, was born in Michigan, USA, in He graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Though he was in line for the presidency of the Jewel Tea Company in 1932, Herb decided to help revive the near-bankrupt Club Aluminum Company of Chicago, taking an 80 percent pay cut to become it s president, even investing his own money in the company to give it some operating capital. Herb prayed for the inspiration to craft a short measuring stick of ethics for the staff to use. The first statement he wrote was too long. Then, Herb checked his statement with the four department heads, who, though of different religious backgrounds, all agreed that the Test's principles provided an exemplary guide for personal and business life. "The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do" was born. But would it work in the real world? The Four-Way Test was initiated in the rough and tumble world of business, and practiced during one of the toughest times that the business community has ever known. In 1942, Richard Vernor of Chicago, then a director of Rotary International, suggested that Rotary adopt the Test. The R.I. Board approved his proposal in January Herb Taylor transferred the copyright to Rotary International when he served as R.I. president in , during the organization's golden anniversary. Is the Four-Way Test still relevant today? You decide. Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
