1 Scholarship Application 2018 Terra Madre /Salone del Gusto (Turin, Italy) The Terra Madre Scholarships (up to three) Slow Food Hunter Valley is offering up to three scholarships to Turin, Italy for the international Terra Madre event (20-24 September 2018). The scholarship categories are: Young Hunter Valley Farmer scholarship: This category is open to all Hunter Valley farmers between years of age who can demonstrate sustainable farming practises and the good, clean and fair production of food in our area. Hunter Valley Chef scholarship: This category is open to all chefs working in the Hunter Valley who can demonstrate a longstanding and strong commitment to sourcing local, seasonal produce for their menus. Earth Market Farmer/Producer scholarship: This category is open to all farmers or producers who have been longstanding Earth Market stallholders (participating in the markets for more than 12 months to May 2018) and have had an 80% (or higher) attendance between May 2017 and May What is Terra Madre? Terra Madre means Mother Earth. Terra Madre is a movement that consists of a network of people spanning the globe. It consists of farmers, teachers, producers, chefs, academics, food communities, youth and activists working in the food system to promote more sustainable food production practises. The common thread that binds these people is the desire to move to a more sustainable food system, promote good, clean and fair food for all and to positively impact our food system. Every two years the Terra Madre network holds an international event in Turin, Italy where members of the network (and interested parties) gather, exchange ideas, strengthen the network and, above all, learn from others. 2 Scholarship Application 2018 Terra Madre /Salone del Gusto (Turin, Italy) The Scholarship in More Detail Each scholarship has a maximum value of $2,500 (AUD) and includes: return air fares from Sydney, Australia to Turin, Italy (transfers included) travel insurance accommodation in Turin, Italy during the Terra Madre event a maximum of $200 (AUD) spending money for incidentals attendance at and participation in Slow Food International s 2018 Terra Madre /Salone del Gusto (Turin, Italy) from September, 2018 (inclusive) access to Slow Food International (SFI) Terre Madre Network to establish mentoring partnership/s facilitated by SFI access to producers and Slow Food convivia within Italy facilitated by SFI. NOTE: Other independent travel (including any accommodation, tours, or other costs) either side of the event are at the winner s expense. Page 2 of 7

3 Selection Criteria and Requirements You will be asked to clearly demonstrate your commitment to using, promoting and/or farming local and seasonal produce in a way that promotes more sustainable food production practises and has a positive impact on our food system. To be eligible for one of the scholarships: 1. You must be eligible under one of the criteria set out on page 1 (as a Young Hunter Valley Farmer, a Hunter Valley Chef, or an Earth Market Farmer/Producer). 2. You must be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of local produce. 3. You will be asked to demonstrate an understanding of the Terra Madre network, and have a clear vision as to how it may have a positive impact on you (as a chef/farmer/producer). 4. You will be expected to help build the local Terra Madre Network and/ or participate in a number of events across the Hunter Valley utilising information gained at Terra Madre. 5. Following your return from Terra Madre you will be required to speak at a number of engagements or conduct demonstrations where you will be asked to be an advocate for Slow Food and the Terra Madre network. 6. You will be asked to make yourself available for media interviews prior to and following your return from Terra Madre. 7. You will be required to lead a project within the local community that helps develop the local Terra Madre network (supported by Slow Food Hunter Valley members). 8. You will be asked to provide relevant photos and text for Slow Food Hunter Valley Facebook posts and website during your time at Terra Madre. 9. You must be or be prepared to become a member of Slow Food Hunter Valley (or the Slow Food Youth Network Hunter Valley). Membership is payable prior to your departure. 10. If you are winner of the scholarship under either the Young Hunter Valley Farmer or the Earth Market Farmer/Producer category, upon your return to the Hunter you will conduct two sustainable farming workshops with aspiring young farmers and producers and engage them in the work of Slow Food. 11. If you are a winner under the Hunter Valley Chef scholarship category, upon your return to the Hunter you will conduct at least four cooking demonstrations or workshops with aspiring home cooks or at events around the Hunter Valley. 12. If you are a short-listed candidate you will be contacted and requested to participate in a face-to-face interview conducted by the selection panel. Panel members will include two executive members from Slow Food Hunter Valley and two industry/community representatives. IMPORTANT DATES 15 Mar submissions open. 21 May submissions close. 25 May potential candidates contacted for interviews. 2-4 Jun interview process. 6 Jun all candidates contacted and informed of whether they were successful. 7 Jun successful candidates announced. 4 The Agenda During and After Terra Madre/Salone del Gusto 1. The scholarship recipient must be free of all Australian job commitments whilst attending this event. This includes allowing at least two days prior to and following the event for travel time. 2. Recipients must arrive in Turin, Italy in time to attend the Terra Madre/ Salone del Gusto 2018 opening ceremony on 20 September, You will undertake the FULL program approved by Slow Food Hunter Valley to ensure your full participation in 2018 Terra Madre /Salone del Gusto (each item on the program will require a report). 4. You will maintain a high level of interest, participation and behaviour throughout the event. 5. While overseas you will maintain and update a social media presence as negotiated with Slow Food Hunter Valley either on your own Facebook page or on Slow Food Hunter Valley s Facebook page (or both). 6. You will provide Slow Food Hunter Valley with a written report of your time in Italy within four weeks after your return to Australia and include photographs. 7. You will give a presentation about the scholarship at a Slow Food Hunter Valley function on Terra Madre Day (December 10th 2018). 8.
