1 Joyful News 1 July/August 2017 Volume XXi, No. 7 (Rev) Open Communication and Compassion The intention to communicate openly lies at the heart of community. Open communication arises when people feel secure in who they are. Being comfortable with oneself leads to compassion which is love in action. Clear intentions hold us together both as individuals and as a congregation. When we identify and commit ourselves to a clear intention, we lay the framework for internal congruence. A singleness of purpose influences every dimension of our lives. Our whole being coalesces around our intention. We tap into a power greater than ourselves. We start to live in the zone and the Universe rushes in to support us. Sports heroes illustrate the power of personal intention, intention with commitment. When asked, athletes speak of having a drive to attain an overarching goal. They are committed. Often it is an ambitious goal. It could be to create a new personal best in the next contest, or to qualify and win state finals or to qualify for the Olympics. I recently heard Cyrus Hostetler speak at the 2017 graduation ceremonies at his alma mater, Newberg High School. He spoke of the many physical injuries that could have stopped him from competing. Because of commitment to his Woodland Chapel Celebrates Joy! In One Spirit, One Life, One World! Rev. Maur Horton, Senior Minister intention, he qualified to throw the javelin in the PanAm games and in the Olympic games in 2012 and He said: if he, an average student and an average athlete could reach great heights, so could each of the graduating seniors, albeit in their respective chosen endeavors. One of the highest intentions we can form as an individual is one of compassionate service. Once we are committed to compassion, we can let our love spring into action. Action arises from compassion. Talk about clear and open communication and about compassionate service! Recently Woodland Chapel hosted oral panels for four people who took the final step to become Practitioners. Three were from Eugene Center and one from our Center. I served on three of the panels. We heard life stories in which each candidate has formed the clear intention to serve others through prayer and action. Spiritual mind treatment or positive prayer work is the basis for each of them. Their life journeys illustrate Paul s admonition in 1 Thessalonians: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in all circumstances. Each of the four identified specific areas of sacred service: (Continued on page 2) Woodland Chapel Spirit s Church!

2 2 July/August youth ministry, teaching adult on-line classes, serving as a role model for young adults and making church fun through music. There is a lesson in all of this for us. As a congregation our intentions are to help each person reveal their spiritual magnificence and to help the world work for everyone. We do this when we live our spiritual values. Open communication and compassion are two of these values. Each of us expresses our intentions when we serve our Center and our world through our work and our volunteering. We benefit ourselves and our communities. We grow in the ability to show love. We contribute to peace and harmony in our families, our community, our nation and in our world. Let s do it! Let s allow our best intentions to be our reality. Here is a way to get there: meditate until reaching clarity about your intentions and open yourself to Spirit in prayer. As we do this, we see the path. Divine Love infuses us. We bring divine right action into our world. We are a community of open communication and compassion. Namaste, Rev Maur Applause We recognize and thank the following people: Candy Willimann, Sue Rawson, and Madeline Osborne for providing the Spaghetti Dinner & Movie night fundraiser. Pete Dane and Phyllis Kerrr for braving 100º heat to work in the Meditation Garden on June 24. Special thanks to our ministry team: Rev Maur, Rev Don, Rev Julie, and Kathy Prather for participating in the oral panel exams for four new practioners, including Ruth TenEyck. And thank you to Rev Linda Finley, who also participated. Vicki Tournay, Phyllis Kerr, and Madeline Osborne for their teamwork on kitchen duty for our June potluck. July Theme- Open Communication We communicate openly with each other in an atmosphere of collaboration and inclusion. Books: Gracism David A. Anderson, Blink Malcolm Gladwell August Theme- Love, Compassion and Caring We embrace Love as the Self-Givingness of God to all creation, moving through us into expression as compassion, caring, mutual respect and kindness. We express interest in and support for the well-being of ourselves and others. We express unconditional love when observing the suffering of others and do what we can to give aid and show compassion. Books: Through the Flames Alan Lokos, The Kindness Handbook Sharon Salzberg

Sacred Giving We believe that abundance flows in all directions when we give. It not only blesses and prospers where our money goes, but abundance comes back to us. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over (Luke 6:38) Thus we practice tithing to our spiritual home. Giving can also be part be of our overall financial plan. A bequest in a will or trust can be a powerful way to extend your love for generations to come through our community.

As I arise in the morning, I remember that God is Energy. As I step into the shower, eat my breakfast, brush my teeth, I remember that God is Wholeness. As I plan my day, I remember that God is Infinite Intelligence. As I greet other people, animals, or tend to my plants, I remember that God is Love. As I write, draw, play or work, I remember that God is Creativity. As I meditate or pray, I remember that I am the Peace Within. As I interact with others, I remember that I am Harmony. As I find pleasure in the things that I do, I remember that I am Joy. As I serve others in any capacity, I remember that I am Compassion. As I see flowers, trees, oceans, mountains, I remember that I am Beauty. As I live, move and have my being, I remember that I am Freedom. What I know for myself I know for everyone As I am mindful of all that God is, I remember that God is Abundance. I am blessed to experience all the Abundance that God is: Source, Energy, Wholeness, Intelligence, Love, Creativity, Peace, Harmony, Joy, Compassion, Beauty, Freedom. These are the qualities that enrich our lives. I see every heart and mind open to receive them. Awareness is the key, and I pray for this awareness for family, friends, and all people around the world, especially those in leadership positions. I am grateful to have this awareness. On behalf of all who join with me in Spirit, I release my awareness into the Creative Energy that is God. And so it is.
