Service at 7:00 p.m. Services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. This day marks Christ s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week. A special dramatic presentation of the Passion Gospel Reading will conclude our service. Service at 7:00 p.m. This is the night when we remember the Last Supper and Christ s servant attitude. The service concludes with the stripping of the altar in preparation for Good Friday. This year we once again go together to a hill outside Jerusalem which we know as Calvary and where our Lord Jesus fulfilled all that the Father had ordained from the beginning of time. We invite you to join us at this very special worship service. April 20, 2014 Services at 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. A day to celebrate Christ s victory over death and the grave. A day to shout joyous Alleluias! Our 6:00 a.m. service kicks off the celebration with a traditional service of light. We continue our celebration at our 10:00 a.m. service. Everyone is invited to worship with us invite your family and friends! 2

V e s p e r e G r a t i a EVENING GRACE by Esther Dharmaraj & The Rev. Steve Kennedy E very Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Vespere Gratia Evening Grace - is held at St. David s Anglican Church. It is a time of worshipping God as He has been worshipped in the ancient liturgical tradition - with the reading and study of Scripture, the chanting of the Psalm, the ringing of the sacramental bells, the offering of incense as a high-ascending, sweet smelling offering to God and the partaking of the Lord s Supper. O n March 21 and 22 our Membership Class was held and was attended by five people. It was a joy the following Sunday, March 23 to welcome as new members: Gregory Campeau, Kola Fasoranti, Sarguis Ganjeh, Terri Lund and Ashley Trim. For those who feel you have found for yourself and your family a spiritual home at St. David s and would like to enjoy the benefits of membership, our Membership Class will be offered again on September Mark the date on your calendars and keep an eye out for more details and registration information coming soon. We invite you to be blessed by being a part of this timeless narrative of worship, united with those who have gone on ahead and those who will come after us. On April 23, 2014, after service, there will be a potluck meal. It will provide a wonderful opportunity to visit with, and do life with fellow worshippers. Members of St. David s Elected to Serve the Diocese t the last Executive Committee A meeting of our Diocese, on March 7-8, said committee elected our own Alex Falo to be the new Treasurer of the Diocese of Western Anglicans. This election and appointment is a one year position but most likely will end up being a multiannual position. At that same meeting our own Spencer Johnson was also elected to represent our Diocese at the Provincial Council of the Anglican Church in North America. This position is for five years. Spencer also will represent the Diocese at the Provincial Assembly in June. Please pray for the two of them and rejoice with them for the trust placed upon them. 3

T-Shirts and Tote Bags Ready, Set, Go! S t. David s is launching an evangelistic effort that will involve sharing Jesus with others through the ministry of Presence, a message on a St. David s T- shirt and Tote Bags and all of us being able to answer others when they ask us what the signage and the slogan mean. The most important thing for all of us to keep in mind, as Fr. Jose preached to us in January, is that as people come and visit St. David s they need to be able to meet Jesus in us, among us and through us. The question for you here is: Does Jesus live at St. David s? The slogan says He does. How can you make Him visible at our church? The price of the t-shirts is $11.00 each and will be offered in your choice of black or white. The cost of the Tote bags will be $7.00 each. We will begin to accept pre-orders on Sunday, April 6. Please see Deborah Chase to order your shirts and bags. Let s GO! R emember that you were once separated from Christ without hope and without God. It is by grace that you have been saved through faith. Ephesians 2:12 & 2:8 some of the most quoted scriptures in the New Testament, offering you and me the bridge between our former state and our salvation and hope!! The Women of Light will be meeting the second Saturday in April on April 12 th at 10am at the church office. We will continue our study on Ephesians, Lessons 4 and 5: The Key to Salvation and Christ the Bridge Builder. 6 April 2014 by The Rev. Jose Poch W henever we think of Discipleship the thing that most often comes to our minds almost immediately is Bible Studies, group learning or being guided by a mentor, being taught to walk as Jesus walked and taught us to walk and being led into the knowledge of the Lord. There is no question that Discipleship includes this. But I believe that Discipleship does not start here and this may be what is missing in many disciples and therefore the reason for so few true disciples or for lukewarm disciples. Discipleship begins in the Inner Life of the spirit. A man named Nicodemus came to Jesus once under the cover of night. He was of the party of the Pharisees, a very religious group within Judaism. Jesus helped Nicodemus understand the importance of a new spiritual birth. Nicodemus had been a religious man most of his life and yet Jesus called him to be born again/anew. By this symbol of new birth Jesus was pointing to the necessity, in the inner life of a person, of a new relationship with God through Himself, the only Son of God, and by the power of the Holy Spirit. A Disciple of Jesus must necessarily begin here for if we are not born again and our spirits transformed by the reality of the love of God and of who Jesus Christ is and of the importance of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, we will not be very good disciples, no matter how much we are taught. When God enters our inner life, the change He brings will also affect our outer lives. So as I write to you on Discipleship today, I want to encourage each of you who truly want to follow our Lord to put some attention on your Inner Life, the new birth, the start of a good and strong relationship with God and the nourishment of your Inner Life through prayer and meditation. A good Disciple has a strong Inner Life. 7 Love Notes A Ministry to the Couples of our Community by Luisa Johnson I t is our plan to present you with opportunities to strengthen your marriages once a quarter this year. However, the responsibility of building and growing in love for one another is a daily practice. How are things going in that regard? Is there evidence of your effort? Ask your spouse for some honest and encouraging feedback. Have you heard of the Pauline Sandwich? It is a practice of St. Paul s as he was writing letters of exhortation to the church communities that he would sandwich the exhortation between words of encouragement and praise. He began and ended his letters with prayer. He gives praise to God and lifts up words of gratitude for the believer s good works of faith. His instructions and criticisms may have been hard to hear but even today are clearly tempered with love. As a spouse, it is always tempting to react to annoyances or disappointments with words of criticism. Remember: God gives us our marriage relationships to make us HOLY, not happy. We are together to help our growth as Christ s ambassadors in our generation, to our families and to our neighbors. Be kind and gentle with your words. And if need be, communicate the problem, with prayer and with a sandwich of what is good in your marriage. Also, offer the problem with a clear and specific SOLUTION. This step will give tremendous benefit to building a stronger union. Saturday, May 31 st 10:30am to 1:30pm Pastor/Teacher/Speaker Tim Smith, MFT and Luisa Johnson, PhD will be presenting a workshop on Parenting our Adult Kids with Love and Boundaries. All interested are welcome, even if you do not have kids over 18 years in your household. Invite your friends and let s discuss and learn together. If you have questions, talk to Luisa or contact her at

A Gathering of Lay Leaders Class B eginning on Saturday, April 5 and continuing on the first Saturday of every month from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Church Office in Sherman Oaks, a new class will be started for those interested in more advanced and intensive studies and to grow as leaders at our church. The study will be connected to Ligonier Ministries and Dr. R. C. Sproul and this first study will be on Systematic Theology. The study will be through the internet in the office. There is no cost for anyone interested in this and no additional materials will need to be purchased. All you will need is your Bible, writing materials and an open heart to learn. The study will be led by Fr. Jose. at St. David s C alling all our Single Young Adults we want to invite all of you who are Single, feel they are still Young and are Adults (over 20), to a special organizational meeting of this group and ministry on Sunday, April 13, after that day s church services. Please speak with Ashley Trim for more information or to share with her any idea you might have, (cell) or ashley.trim@gmail.com. 8

For more information on how to become a SAGE, see Spencer Johnson or at spenjohn@yahoo.com Happy Easter from the SAGES! Sharing the Faith by Serving by The Rev. Jose Poch I t is unquestionable to any Bible-reading person that sharing our faith in Jesus Christ is essential to the Christian walk of discipleship. First, because it was commanded to us by Jesus Himself in what we call the Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20: All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen. Secondly, because it is an act of love toward all our fellow human beings that we introduce them to the Savior of the world, to the only One through whom our sins can be forgiven and the only One by whom we can come to the Father s house (John 14:6). Continued on page 10 9

Thirdly, because there is no greater joy in life than to tell others about our Lord, the One who holds us in the palm of His hands, the One whose love fills our hearts and the One in whose communion we find the greatest source of peace and joy, the One who gives reason to our existence. Jesus should be the most exciting topic of conversation for us who believe in Him. A form of sharing our faith that we should never overlook is one in which we use more than words, more than a testimony or a convincing argument. It is the sharing of the faith that is in us through serving others. I heard on the radio once that For Jesus, ministry was the person right in front of Him. Think about these words. Every time someone comes across your path, whether at home, at work or at play, is an opportunity for you to show them Jesus, to introduce him or her to Jesus. The love of Jesus for them will come through you, His care, His provision, His prayer, His companionship and His presence. Sometimes this will be more powerful than any words you can speak. I am not suggesting by this that actions alone introduce Jesus, words are also necessary. The Gospel is to be communicated. Jesus sent His disciples into all the world to spread a Good News for all people. But also words alone without actions are not enough. Jesus sent His disciples into the world to incarnate the Gospel, to make it visible and tangible. I want to encourage you to begin with your actions and then share with them the reason for those actions. Illustrate the Gospel by/with your life, serve all who cross your path, greet those you meet in an elevator, help a child, smile and be courteous to all, give someone the right of way on the road or in a line at the grocery store, visit the sick and pray for them, give to the poor, forgive those who hurt you immediately, let the light of Christ s presence in you shine forth and then share with them Jesus with joy, make Him a topic of conversation. Don t do one without the other (James 2:18-26). Be a servant as your Lord who saved you was a servant. Take a page from His book on sharing the faith. Will you do it? 10

On The Search For A New Bishop As we have been announcing for several months already, our Diocese is conducting a search for our new Bishop. All we can tell you for now is that the Bishop s Nominating Committee, of which our Dcn. Dianne Charves and our Jr. Warden, Spencer Johnson are members, are in the process of conducting a Background Check and a Psychological Exam on the candidates. References are also being contacted and a visit to the congregations where the two remaining candidates serve (Fr. Russell Martin and Fr. Keith Andrews) is in the works. It is extremely important that you all know that as of Monday, March 24, Fr. Jose is no longer a candidate for Bishop. He is staying at St. David s as our rector. Please mark your calendars immediately. The election of our new Bishop will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 9:30 am at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, 600 St Andrews Rd, Newport Beach, CA Please be in prayer that the Lord would have His way in giving us the person He has already chosen for this important position in His Church. Spiritual Disciplines Entering the Heart of God St. David s is producing a series of short videos on Spiritual Disciplines. In these short videos Fr. Jose Poch will be teaching on spiritual disciplines such as prayer, meditation, fasting etc. that enable us to walk close with God and abide in Him.
