Pastor s Notes Peter s message about the responsibility for the death of Jesus is actually a more global one. All of us sinners bear guilt for the death of Jesus in this cosmic event. Our only salvation is in Christ and we can only achieve it by converting and repenting of our sins. Peter makes an excuse for those who actually caused the death of Jesus in time when they chose to free a murderer instead of the Author of Life. A man so badly beaten would not be easily identified as the Messiah. It is not at all what the Jewish people were expecting. By calling Jesus a servant, Peter makes reference to Isaiah s prophecy about the Suffering Servant (Is 52:13-15). Peter connects the Old Testament writings further by calling Jesus the Holy and Righteous One. It is very important to note that while the Jewish authorities in Jesus time instigated Jesus death, not all Jews complied with them. The Jews and Catholics of today are not responsible for the sins of our forefathers either. But because we know better through divine revelation, we Catholics are more responsible for our sins than the Jews of today are for their sins because they have never accepted the Gospel. We Catholics have. Peter calls all people to repent and turn from their sinful ways. Whether we are Catholic or Jews, the message is the same, but we Catholics have the great gifts of the Sacraments, especially Baptism and Penance. John addresses us as little children to speak to us with a tenderness and a pastoral concern. He is expressing a deep love for us like Jesus did at the Last Supper. John seems to exhort us to avoid sin because he is afraid that we might lose heart and despair. He does not want us to get enslaved to sin and he does not want us to recall past forgiven sins in a morbid way, both of which can have overwhelming effects on our sanity. He fills us with hope that when we resolve not to commit these sins again, Jesus will become our Advocate with the Father. Keeping the commandments is a sure sign of true knowledge of God. Knowing God is not just an intellectual exercise because we cannot grasp God s immensity. Knowing God is uniting ourselves to Him by faith and love. Keeping His commandments is keeping His Word. When Jesus appears in His resurrected body, His body exhibits subtility. Subtility is when the body responds to whatever the soul wishes, e.g., the ability to pass through material obstacles. Jesus has the Apostles touch His body and He eats food, although not necessary for a glorified body, to show the Apostles that He is alive. This meeting gives us hope because it shows us just one of the gifts of the glorified body for those who enter heaven. Fr. Euk St. Veronica School Walk-A-Thon This year, Fr. Euk will be walking in the school Walk-A-Thon on May 4th, to help raise money for the school. If you would like to be a sponsor for Father, please drop off a check to the rectory, or put it in the collection basket, and mark it Fr. Euk sponsor. Thank you. Scripture Meditation "He stood in their midst and said to them, 'Peace be with you.' But they were startled and terrified." What was so terrifying about being wished peace? How ironic that the disciples were so scared right at the moment that Jesus was offering them peace. The fact is that they didn't understand what was going on. They were already aware at this point that Jesus had risen from the dead, and two of them had just had a powerful encounter with him on the road to Emmaus. But now, he suddenly appeared before them, in a manner that was not only totally unexpected, but also apparently physically impossible. This is why they thought they were seeing a ghost. It just didn't make sense. Jesus reassured them with concrete actions. He told them to look at him and to touch him. He wanted his disciples to be comforted by his real physical presence among them. He wanted them to come into contact with his entire being, not just the abstract idea of his presence. Once they did this, they were "incredulous for joy and were amazed." The peace that he wished for them was now complemented by great joy. It just took a while to sink in. This may be the case for us at times too. We may not understand the mysterious ways in which Jesus is present in our lives. Sometimes he is hidden in what Mother Teresa called "the distressing disguise." His Spirit may be present, wishing to bring us peace right in the midst of stress, sickness, anguish, or pain, but we may not recognize him at first. But just because he may not "show up" in the way we expect doesn't mean he isn't with us. The risen Christ also wants to give us the gift of peace.
