Page 2 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2015 NOVEMBER VISION: Last Things First There is a radiant kind of autumn light, an ever-changing landscape of leaves caught in the wind that tell us we have begun November. It is harvest time. Markets offer a profusion of apples, squash and pumpkins. Corn stalks and Indian corn decorate our doorways and multi-colored mums hold out against the frost - - a last hurrah of nature s bounty. All Saints and All Souls Days are past, but they herald an ongoing harvest of souls. The revelation may quicken our faith or challenge it. Will this poetic time lead us to intimations of Immortality or desperate strategies to escape the Grim Reaper? The Last Things - - death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory - - are not far from us. They are November s prophecy of the inevitable. Purgatory stirs the Catholic imagination. Classic Dante leads us to a diorama of the Seven Storey Mountain with seven deadly sins and their virtuous antidotes. A dated, and misguided, illustration of purgatorial fire showed a boy in a burning hospital bed! It made the remedy worse than the disease. Frankly, I think Fr. Maurice Zundel s vision of Purgatory makes much more theological sense. He asks: What is the characteristic suffering in Purgatory? It is a suffering of love... It is a fire of love which inspires the soul to hurl itself towards God, but it cannot. Its selfishness still enchains it, and it must rid itself of this selfishness before going to God. The soul must reach the cellar in which the fruit, harvested too soon, is left to ripen. It is an incubator of hope and love, where the embryo souls may develop, provided their liberty succeeds... in hollowing out for itself this hole of light in which Man is placed beyond time and death. Fr. Zundel s imagery makes the suffering of Purgatory much less torture than rehabilitating therapy. It also reminds me of a young girl I knew in my first assignment. Let us call her Mary Jo. She was a member of our youth choir. More than pleasingly plump, she wore heavy glasses. Mary Jo had an Irish sense of humor and dressed like a smaller version of Mama Cass. Mary Jo was away at college for much of the year. She arranged her wedding long distance. I will never forget the sight of her as a Bride coming down the aisle. The new Mary Jo had lost a prodigious amount of weight, wore contact lenses, and abandoned her muu muu like a cocoon! Someone commented: She went through hell to look like that! Actually, she went through a kind of Purgatory. The key to her transformation was love! Fr. Maurice Zundel I think of Mary Jo and the love that transformed her into a beautiful bride. She has become part of my November vision. It is a vision of Last Things, to be sure, but it is also a lesson about what we should put first. In the old preface for weddings, we heard: Love is man s origin; Love is his constant calling; Love is his fulfillment in heaven. November and thoughts about the harvest of souls need not frighten us. In the love of Christ, Last Things are BEST THINGS. -Fr. Luczak

If you would like the names of family members and/or friends (especially those who have died in the past year) to be announced during the service, please contact the RE Office, 847/966-1180 or sijre2004@yahoo.com, with the name and correct spelling. Names received by November 11 th will be included in the prayer service booklet. Names received after that date will be called at the prayer service, but will not be in the booklet. Please invite your families, friends and neighbors for this heartwarming story of an eight year old boy who will do whatever he has to end the world war and bring his dad home. As always the movie, popcorn and beverages are free! St. Isaac Jogues Men s Club News SIJ Men s Club Memorial Mass honoring past deceased members will be held November 18th at 7 p.m. in church with Fr. Andrew Luczak and Deacon Paul Stanton presiding. After Mass our Thanksgiving church dinner will be hosted by John Affatati and held in the church hall. All members of the parish are invited to the Mass and men to the dinner. The cost of dinner alone is $15.00 and to join the Men s Club for the remaining six meetings is $35.00. Prizes to be raffled include four turkeys and one dart board. Your presence will be greatly appreciated! JOHN 17 FELLOWSHIP -In response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis the John 17 Fellowship is praying for the refugees during their services today. We are also accepting donations to assist in providing humanitarian relief for them. The donations collected in the alms boxes at the doors of St. Isaac Jogues today will be sent to Catholic Relief Services. Thank you for your generosity! -The next John 17 Fellowship gathering is this Tuesday, November 10, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenview. Parishioners interested in sharing in this ecumenical group comprised of St. Isaac Jogues Church, Messiah Lutheran Church and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church are invited to come. In addition to prayer and discussion we will talk about events in our churches as well as make plans for the ecumenical Advent Morning of Reflection (December) and Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Service (January, 2016). GIVING TREE Every December, your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry visits the Glenbridge and Niles Nursing Homes, bringing gifts, music and cheer to the residents. As many of you may know, life as a resident in a nursing home may often be difficult. Some patients are recovering from an illness and will be able to get back to their homes and families, but many will remain there as a final residence. Our parish tradition has been to share our bounty by giving communal gifts to the nursing home residents which can be enjoyed throughout the year. We also give each resident a small Christmas balloon to brighten up their rooms and help spread the holiday spirit. We rely on your support to make it possible for us to continue our Giving Tree tradition. Giving Tree envelopes have been included in the November collection envelopes which have been mailed to you. On Nov. 15 th, the second collection will benefit the Giving Tree. Extra envelopes can be found at the church entrances. Donations may be made at any time, up to and including Christmas. GOD S WORD TODAY Saint Mark s Gospel has been a rich source of challenge and inspiration for us as we have moved through these latter Sundays of Ordinary Time. Today we hear the familiar story of the poor widow who placed her two small coins in the temple treasury. She did not give from her surplus, simply because she had no surplus. The Lord tells us that she gave from her poverty. In the first reading the widow of Zarephath gives Elijah her final store of food. She admits that without this food, she and her son will soon die. Yet her generosity and selflessness result in a jug of oil that never runs dry and a jar of flour that never goes empty. May these two women inspire us to respond to the Lord with generous hearts.
