Pastor s Notes I would like to thank all those volunteer parishioners who made all of our holy days possible during this Christmastide, especially the choir, the children s choir, our Praise and Glory group and our young adult choir. I also want to thank all the little elves who made the church look so beautiful and their ingenuity in redesigning things to work with the changes in the sanctuary. I am grateful to all the altar servers, the Ministers of Holy Communion, the lectors and the ushers who participated in the Masses. It really added to the festivities and prayerfulness of all the liturgies. I am looking forward to this next year. Father Vic and I thank the many people who have sent us good wishes and prayers for Christmas and the new year. ******************************** The Books of Samuel are very worthwhile to read. In today s reading we find Hannah (aka Anna) barren and being ridiculed for it. She prayed for a son and promised to dedicate him to God. As with Isaac, Samson and John the Baptist, God intervenes and she conceives Samuel, which means, I asked God for Him or the name of God. In keeping her promise, Hannah presents Samuel to Eli at the temple of God. Samuel becomes very beloved to the people while Eli s sons are corrupt and disliked. He will eventually anoint David who will replace King Saul. Today, more and more people are becoming infertile. There are many reasons for this. Sometimes it is just a natural defect. Other times it is because of using drugs that make people that way or various acquired diseases. Infertility is as heartbreaking as it was for Hannah. With modern technologies, scientists have developed sinful ways of producing a child outside of the body, generally using the in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique. The Church has condemned this method for a few reasons. The Church sees producing a child as a product as degrading. It is well documented how undignified the IVF process is for both the man and the women. (The process can involve up to three persons contributing to the product.) Technicians then treat the products like live stock by choosing the healthiest specimen to implant into the biological mother, who also may be hired to have the child for someone else. Many times several fertilized eggs are implanted in the hope of producing a pregnancy because the technique is only 30% effective. Some physicians then cull the excess products to avoid complications. The left over fertilized eggs may be left to the unhappy fate of being frozen. The Gospel tells us about Jesus getting lost for three days. It is a mystery of the Rosary, a mystery of family strife. Family life is not always filled with happy events like on TV. Families are held together by a bond of Charity, a theological virtue. This makes harmony particularly difficult to achieve, but the more parents rear their children in this bond, the better they become outside of the home. Outside the home, people are bonded by the virtue of justice, a much easier virtue to achieve. Perhaps this is why St. John Paul used to describe home life as a place to have children grow in humanity. When we mediate on Mary and Joseph losing their child, we can think of losing a child in a store or even worse losing a child to drug addiction and the like. We would ordinarily think of blaming ourselves. Well, however Mary reacted to this incident, we know she never sinned. So we can look to her as a model for how to live through bad family situations. Joseph, a highly virtuous man, but afflicted with human weakness like us, may have been pushed to his limit like us. Mary still asks the question that all of us ask when life goes wrong, Why have you done this to us? It is the question that many parents have asked throughout the centuries. Jesus give a unique response which strikes the heart of His mother and all mothers. I am sure Mary recalled the words of Simeon that a sword would pierce her heart. Mary and Joseph confront the mystery of the Incarnation s final purpose and do not understand it. Jesus came into the world to bear witness to the Truth. All who are on the side of Truth bear witness to the Truth which leads them to the Cross. The letter from John talks about being called God s children. May we become precisely that. On this feast of the Holy family, may we reflect on our own family life and come to see the family as the domestic Church, a place for teaching about the love of God, practicing the ways of Jesus, correcting and forgiving transgressions, making acts of faith especially in times of strife and most of all seeing the glory of the Cross throughout. As you know this year is dedicated to the Mercy of God. I will be in Rome to be formally appointed by Pope Francis to begin my service as a Missionary of Mercy. I will be meeting with the Pope on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and then will receive my mandate on Ash Wednesday during the Mass in St. Peter s. Fr. Euk Please Note: The rectory office will be closed on Thursday, December 31st and Friday, January 1st.
