Pastors Notes I am deeply grateful to all of you who have pledged over $325,000 last and this week to the Faith to Move Mountains capital campaign. That gives the parish a total pledge of $600,000. I do hope that more of you will make pledges so that we can meet our $1.4 million goal. Elijah, whose name means My God is the Lord, just killed 450 of Baal's prophets after his water drenched holocaust was accepted by God and after Baal s prophet s holocaust failed to ignite. Now Elijah is fleeing from Jezebel who wants to kill him. In his exhaustion, Elijah falls asleep under a broom tree and an angel provides him with food and sends him on a 40 day journey to Mt. Horeb. Here, like Moses who received the Ten Commandments there, he encounters God Who directs him to anoint Elisha, whose name means My God saves. This reminds us of Jesus 40 day fast followed by His selecting His Apostles. Elijah s cloak is symbolic of his office and his rights as a prophet. The act of throwing the mantle over the shoulders of Elisha represents Elijah acquiring authority over Elisha and the divine call to share in the prophetic mission. Elisha s response was total obedience to God s call and he detaches himself from his former way of life to become Elijah s apprentice. This reminds us also of the Apostles immediate response to Jesus call to follow Him. Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem to die for us. Jesus was refused hospitality by the Samaritans because He was heading toward the city which held to a higher standard of Judaism. Samaritans intermarried with gentiles and they also mixed paganism into their rites. This rejection upset the disciples, but Jesus wanted them to not show their zeal for God with vengeance. When a person approaches Jesus to become a follower, Jesus points out that His life is difficult because His followers must put God first, as well as live a life of selfdenial. A follower cannot be undecided. He cannot put any conditions on God s will for him. Scripture Meditation "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." What have we left behind? What have we traded in to become faithful followers of Christ? The answer is different for all of us. Some of us can tell the tale of a dramatic conversion story, leaving behind a life of blatantly selfish indulgence or obviously sinful behavior in order to embrace the call of Jesus. Others of us have been Christians since the day of our baptism as infants and have always walked the path of belief, but perhaps can trace certain moments when we embraced a deeper commitment and resolved to abandon particular behaviors, relationships, or worldly priorities that were in conflict with our faith. Whatever the case, Jesus instructs us today not to look to "what was left behind." Instead, we are called to keep our focus on what lies ahead, namely, life in Christ and the ultimate hope of union with him in heaven. Keeping this focus can be quite a challenge. So often, it's tempting to think that the grass is greener somewhere else. As Christians, we can fall into the trap of imagining that it might feel better to be... something else. Perhaps, seeing others around us whose lives are not shaped by their faith, we might think they have it easier than we do. Or perhaps we get lost in reminiscence about the way things were in the good old days, and thus get distracted from the mission that stands in front of us today. But thoughts like these are not fit for our new life as disciples of Christ. As St. Paul says in today's epistle, "For freedom Christ set us free." May we embrace the gift of this true freedom and follow Christ without looking back. St. Paul reminds us that sin enslaves us. It almost sounds counter intuitive, but when you really think about it, many people are actually enslaved to sin. It is through asking God for pardon of our sins and acts of charity toward our fellow man that we free ourselves from sin. It is so much easier to incorporate the mind of Christ into our hearts because He makes us spontaneously follow the commandments in a lighthearted way. Fr. Euk
