Pastor s Notes We are quickly approaching the season of Lent. Lent is a time of grace. Many people give up their enslavement to sin when they come to church on Ash Wednesday. We need to pray for these conversions in our parish. In Pope Francis message for Lent this year, he reminds us that God cares for us individually and seeks us out whenever we become indifferent to Him. He never becomes indifferent to us. Pope Francis cautions us that when we are healthy and comfortable, we can forget about others. We become unconcerned with others who are enduring problems, sufferings and injustice. Our hearts can grow cold. The Pope calls this the globalization of indifference and he says that we need to confront this. Pope Francis asks us to meditate on If one member suffers, all suffer together (1 Cor 12:26). In recalling Jesus washing the feet of His Apostles, he reminds us that only those who have first allowed Jesus to wash their feet, can they offer this service to others. Jesus invites us to be a part in Him and with Him (Jn 13:8) so we can serve others. This service is different from just helping people because it is allowing Jesus to use us to show His mercy by assisting others. This can only happen when we, as Catholics, hear the Word of God and receive His Sacraments. In Christ s body there can be no room for indifference. In sharing with the communion of saints we share everything with others. More importantly are those who are so far away from us whom we can never reach on our own, especially those Christians and other minorities in Africa, the Middle East and South West Asia. But in our prayers, we can ask God to open our hearts to His plan of salvation for them. The life of our parishes and communities must point to the experience of being part of the one body of the Church. In joining the saints in heaven, we form a community that conquers indifference by love. The saints in heaven accompany us on our pilgrim way because they are more perfectly a part of the Mystical Body of Christ. The risen Christ gives us the strength to overcome our indifference and hardness of heart. As a parish we are called to go out of ourselves into the greater society with the distant poor. It is part of our missionary nature. We must see in the poor a brother or a sister for whom Christ died and rose again. We need to become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference. If we humbly implore God s grace and accept our limitations, the infinite possibilities of God s love will help us not to give into the diabolical temptation that we, by ourselves, can solve all the problems of the world. We cannot achieve these lofty goals by our own selfsufficiency. Praying for a merciful and poor heart pierced by the Holy Spirit is to realize our own poverty and give freely with what little we have for those suffering others. Ask Jesus to make our hearts like His so that we are not indifferent to those so far away and suffering. One of our parishioners is giving us a salt spreader which will attach to our truck. He is getting it ready. Please pray for him and ask God to bless his family. I have always been worried about the icing problems caused by the weather after a snow fall. Hopefully this will solve the problems we have in the parking lot. Many of our snow removal helpers have gone on to college. If you know of some young people who would like to help out, please call the rectory. Our weekly collection seems to be dropping again. I hope it is because of the weather. Just as you have trouble paying your bills, so do we. There really is not much more I can do since I have laid off all the staff that I can. We are down to the bear bones. Next year I anticipate the school starting to come close to paying for itself, but we still have to think about the future. So far we have not been able to sell our spiritual center. We will need much of this money in about ten more years when we will have to replace the roof on the school. Because it is a metal roof, it may cost as much as $400,000 when it finally gives out. Please remember that Ask Father night is every 4th Friday of the month. It is an opportunity to enrich your spiritual life and to have some input into the parish. The lectures on the Trinity have been well attended. I hope you can take advantage of them. Fr. Euk As we view the TV reports regarding so many atrocities, we can feel indifferent because we think we cannot do anything to help. But this is far from the truth. We can pray in communion with the Church on earth and in heaven to help these suffering people. We can perform acts of charity for them.

OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE Could you not watch on hour with me? (1/168th of your week?) If then my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and heal their land. Thank You My dear parishioners: I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and concern I have received from all over our Diocese, including your parish. I have received over 10,000 cards, letters, emails, video messages, gifts and countless prayers during my hospitalization and ongoing recovery. I could not begin to respond to each one personally, as much as I wish I could. Your pastor has allowed me to offer my heartfelt thanks in your parish bulletin. I am most grateful to you for your loving concern. The future looks good and I hope to be back in public by Palm Sunday. My thankful prayers are with you. God bless you. Bishop O'Connell 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The Diocese of Trenton is again supporting the 40 Days for Life event in all four counties. The 40 Days for Life is a prayerful, peaceful witnessing in front of an abortion clinic to help women who are considering getting an abortion. People are being asked to simply stand (or walk) there and say the Rosary or other prayers for one hour. Here in Monmouth County, the site is the Planned Parenthood facility at 69 E. Newman Springs Rd in Shrewsbury. We have been asked to staff each Wednesday of the 40 Days for Life event from Feb 18 to March 29. That is 6 Wednesdays, Feb 18 and 25, March 4, 11, 18, and 25. The hours are 8 AM to 6 PM. The National 40 Days for Life organization has a web site (http://40daysforlife.com) where you can obtain much information. Please consider signing up for one hour on one or more of the 6 Wednesdays. Please give us a call at 732-367-2565 or email us athmador@optonline.net.
