Pastor s Notes This Wednesday we begin the season of Lent. Bishop O Connell has asked me to remind you of our obligation during this holy season. Each Lent, the Church asks us to join Jesus in the desert spiritually by following Lenten regulations. Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to do: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday we are asked to fast with only one full meal and no meat. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On Fridays we are asked to abstain from meat. Those 14 years and older are obliged to abstain from meat. Eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even if made from animal fat are permitted on days of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of days, which must be considered serious. The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called Easter duty --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14th to Trinity Sunday, May 22nd. However, the Church s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause. Our reading from Isaiah and Luke present a challenge to us in preparation for Lent. Both Isaiah and Peter experience God in an unusual way. This is called a theophany. That is, a manifestation of God to a human being. What is characteristic about theophanies is an overwhelming sense of wretchedness before God. But God in His mercy cleanses Isaiah with the help of an angel and Peter is told to, Be not afraid! Both are then prepared for a mission to evangelize. Over the season of Lent, it is my prayer for you to relive these experiences in the Sacrament of Penance and in the special calling God has given you to spread the Good News. Yes, Penance is the standard for us to start anew and the encouragement to practice our faith. This is enhanced by the power of the Sacrament of Confirmation, which takes away all fear in fulfilling the mission God intends us to do in this life. You might want to consider replacing expensive coffees for cheaper ones during Lent. The sacrifice could be a convenient spiritual sacrifice for you. The money saved could be donated to the parish or to another charitable cause. This Ash Wednesday I will receive a mandate from Pope Francis to be a Missionary of Mercy. I will be serving is some special capacities reserved only to the Pope and will be required to give days of recollection and parish missions upon the requests of all the Bishops throughout the world. (I hope only in the United States!) I ask for your prayers during this appointment which should only last till November 20th. Please also pray for Fr. Vic and Fr. Bill who will fill in for me while I am gone. Please pray for Deacon Gino who will take on more responsibilities in management during my absences. I got a call from Fr. Francis Sirolli, OSA, who was to conduct our annual parish mission. He unfortunately has become ill and will not be able to give the parish mission. Please keep him in your prayers for a speedy recovery. On a brighter side, Fr. Bill O Brien will conduct the Mission. He will be addressing the mystery of mercy Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Just when business was finally booming, Simon and Company closed up shop. The timing was strange, really. After a lifetime of fishing to make a living, these men had just hauled in so many fish that "their nets were tearing" and "the boats were in danger of sinking." Just imagine the profit on the other side of this night's work! Just imagine how their reputation would have grown. How easy it would have been to go out and buy a new fleet of boats and to upgrade their stash of nets. Most likely for the first time, wealth was within reach. And yet, just then, Simon, James, and John left their boats on the shore and followed Jesus in the task of "catching men." This is astonishing. Not only did they give up their sudden monetary success, they gave up EVERY- THING. In a moment's time, these men radically altered their life, their plans, their future, and their fortune. And civilization has never been the same since. Thanks in large part to the courage of these first apostles, and of their successors the bishops, and of all the faithful men and women religious throughout history who have "left everything and followed him," our church has continued to flourish and our culture has been greatly enhanced. Those of us who are members of the laity are likewise called to follow Christ, of course. The tremendous sacrifices that priests and religious sisters make should inspire us, and remind us that serving Christ-at any cost-is worth it. Their lives stand as a powerful witness indeed. Today, let us pause to thank God for these men and women and to ask his blessing on them all.

HOME ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS The parish of St. Veronica s invites and encourages all families and those living alone to enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in their homes. This involves a ceremony in which a priest or deacon solemnly blesses an image of the Sacred Heart, the image is displayed in a prominent place in the home, and all the members of the family consecrate themselves to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This home enthronement becomes our link to the tabernacle in our church, inviting our Lord in the Eucharist to be the King of our hearts and our most intimate companion. The enthronement of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and family consecration to her Immaculate Heart is usually performed at the same time. If you are interested in the Home Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, please contact Joan and Hu Mador at732-367-2565 to make arrangements. The Home Enthronement team is also looking for volunteers to join the team and help promote and set up Home Enthronements. If you are interested, please call at 732-367-2565 Divine Mercy Devotions Please come and join us today, Feb 7th at 1:30PM for the Divine Mercy prayer service, especially in this year of mercy declared by Pope Francis. We not only will be praying for God s Mercy to be outpoured upon this sinful world, but also for the atonement of our own sins. All are invited to join us. Lenten Parish Mission The Name of God is Mercy Come join us on this special Lenten Journey, as Fr. Bill O Brien points us to God s Mercy and the Power of Prayer. Dates: Feb. 14th through 17th at 7:30PM in the church. Each night includes a talk, and on Tuesday night there will also be a Penance Service and Wednesday night closing liturgy. Jesus is calling! Ash Wednesday Schedule February 10th Masses are at 7:20AM, 12 noon and 8PM. (Ashes will be distributed at each Mass) Services are at 3PM and 6PM (Ashes will be distributed at each service.) 3 rd Friday Community Gathering During Lent we invite our 3 rd Friday Community to join us for Stations of the Cross at 7:30 PM, our 3 rd Friday gathering will resume on April 15 th Bishop O Connell has asked all the parishes in the Trenton Diocese to be part of plans for the future. Father Euk, as requested by the Diocese, has formed a committee of four to facilitate this goal. The members of this committee are Lora Franceschina, Claire McCarthy, Joseph Mossa and Joseph Panarella. The first step in this process is the parish survey that we hope will be completed by all. Additional copies can be obtained at the rectory offices. The goals at this time is to strengthen our parish by using the talents and time of all its parishioners to plan for our future. Anyone interested in actively joining this effort can call Claire McCarthy at 732-364-1292.

Since its inception in 2007, 11,165 lives have been saved, 127 abortion workers have quit, and 64 abortion centers have closed. 40 Days for Life also involves prayerful, peaceful witnessing in front of an abortion clinic. The goal is to help women who are considering getting an abortion and encourage them to change their minds. People are being asked to simply stand (or walk) there and say the Rosary or other prayers for one hour. Here in Monmouth, the site is the Planned Parenthood facility at 69 E. Missionaries of the Poor Annual Food Drive Dear St. Veronica Community, We express our sincere gratitude for your continued support throughout the years, in providing food for the children and adults who are under the care of the Missionaries of the Poor in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. In their Apostolate--Asile Communal, they have about 50 mentally and physically challenged children and about 170 adults, also physically challenged and destitute. In addition to these, the Brothers have a food line every two weeks, on Wednesdays, for the poor in the neighborhood who often times have one meal a day. About 500 people come to this food line. In this year of Mercy, the Lord reminds us in the Gospel of St. Matthew, (cf. Matthew 25,40) "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." With your generosity, we hope to put together a 40 ft. container of food for their residents and the local poor in Haiti. We will be handing out food pledge cards after all the Masses on Feb. 27th and 28th and collect your donations on March 5th and 6th. Thank you and God bless you.
