Pastors Notes I would like to thank the Knights of Columbus and their Color Guard for making our Memorial Day observance so special. It was a great tribute to all those who gave their lives to keep our country safe. They put on a wonderful Communion Breakfast where over 140 people came for a great community gathering. Thanks also to our Choir and Regina Reale for a fitting assistance to this holy event in honoring our fallen and wounded. I am grateful to our grass cutters who are keeping up the grounds so well. It would be nice if we could get a few more to help out during summer vacations. I wonder if we should train some of our high school age kids to cut the lawns. We have some very powerful equipment which, with some experience, could land them a summer job in the area. If anyone is interested in seeing the document that our Cohort from Faith in the Future is recommending to our Bishop s planning committee, the ten page document can be viewed in the rectory. At the last Ask Father Night two interesting suggestions were made. The first was to have a sidewalk built so that people could walk to the rectory entrance from the back parking lot. The second was to put a handrail down the left side of the church to help people walk safely during the winter to either the cafeteria entrance or the school entrance. Are there any volunteers to do the work? The parish can pay for the materials. In today s readings there are two reviving miracles, one by Elijah and the other by Jesus. Elijah s miracle demonstrated to the Widow of Zarephath that He was truly a prophet of God. The woman thought it was a divine punishment for her past sins. The Fathers of the Church wrote that as Elijah gave life to the boy, so Jesus gave life to the Church. In the Gospel, Jesus shows his sensitivity to sufferings that stem from love. He therefore overcomes death to give life. The restoration of the son s life shows a parallel of joy for Mother Church when a sinner returns. The second reading from Galatians is unrelated to the other readings because it is a continuation of the letter which we will pick up next week. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her." A survey of the Gospels reveals many ways in which Jesus upheld the dignity of women. In a culture where women were considered second-class citizens, Jesus was never afraid to encounter women, to affirm them, and to welcome them among his followers. He regularly broke rules about interaction with women and understood the value of women's religious testimony. In today's Gospel we see another aspect of Jesus' respect for women. Here we see that his heart was stirred by the situation of this grieving mother. The man who had died was "the only son of his mother, and she was a widow." In other words, this woman had just been stripped of her primary focus in life. Also, in this culture, a woman was protected by her father, her husband, or her son. Absent one of those men in her life, she was in an incredibly vulnerable position. This, along with the grief of losing her child, struck the Lord with pity. "Do not weep," he told her, clearly moved by her sorrow. And then, he did the impossible and restored the dead man to life. But he did more than this. After "the dead man sat up... Jesus gave him to his mother." In other words, Jesus made a point to restore and affirm this woman's vocation as a mother. In our culture, women have earned a much more respectable status and are no longer dependent upon men. But, at times, the noble and irreplaceable role of mother is still undervalued in society. Too often, women who devote themselves to this vocation are dismissed as unimportant. Christ himself reveals, through his ministry to this mother, that her role is vital. May we also find ways to affirm and serve the mothers in our midst.

Grace Notes Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 Have you ever wondered why we sing? Why it is important to sing the Mass? Perhaps because when we sing, we dig deep roots in the Word of God! The St. Veronica Music Ministry offers many opportunities for the youth and adults of our parish to glorify our God. We have two youth choirs, an adult choir, a school choir, and now the ministry of instrumentalists. The youth choirs have served the parish twice monthly and the local community by singing at various health facilities. The adult choir leads us weekly. Take a moment to prayerfully consider walking with us on the pathway of joy. Consider singing with the adult choir once or twice during the next few weeks. Do you play an instrument? Offer your talent! Together let s continue to build the music ministry here at St. Veronica.
