Deacon s Thoughts Merciful Like the Father Which of the 3 main characters are we in the parable of today s Gospel of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:1-32)? The father, son or older brother? There are times in our life journey that I think we have been each one of those persons. Are we the son that is lost, just like the lost sheep, the older son that doesn t appreciate and understand that the father is with him always or the merciful, forgiving and welcoming father? From this story today we should feel the overwhelming power of the mercy of God, who withholds no affection for those who have walked a crooked path or have been lost. God s mercy and forgiveness should touch, console and give us hope. Jesus wants us to know in a special way, that even after we have made stupid mistakes and sinned, He is there looking for us and with open arms wanting to take us back to Him. He is looking to restore us to His love, because God is tireless in seeking out sinners. It is comforting to know that should we, for some reason stray or become lost, our loving Father is joyfully there waiting for us. In our world today, in our Church today, we can see the signs, whereby there are a lot of souls, people who are adrift morally and spiritually and in need of so much healing. Just like the prodigal son, many have scattered, walked away from God and are leading a life of sin and are on the hard path of life. They have been misled by the world, confused and disoriented in their troubles and do not understand or are experiencing God as a loving Father. We must focus on the father, who is telling us something special about God our Father. We are in a family relationship with God whose kindness is beyond words that we can t describe. He welcomes his rebellious children home and treats them as if they never left. The battle of lost souls will not be won, but we have to do our part and not be like the older son who did not understand the pain and loss of the father or joy of the reunion. God expects His love and forgiveness to be imitated by us. How else can He seek the lost and scattered and save them except through us? His pardon is brought into this world by the love and mercy we show to others. Blessed Mother Theresa is a perfect example of one who spread love, compassion and mercy around the world. We may not be called to the same vocation and ministry as Saint Mother Teresa, but we are called to look past the doors of our Church and spread God s love, compassion and mercy. By doing so we welcome home the lost which shows how much we value and treasure our relationship with God. Remember that God s mercy is a gift to us and what we receive from Him we must pass on to others around us. On a personal note, I also want to thank everyone for your love, compassion and prayers for me this past week. The community prayers were felt and much appreciated. That is also a part of sharing God s love and mercy as we gather as a family and pray for each other. Thank you for your prayers. Deacon Gino Scripture Meditation "The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus knew these self-righteous religious leaders were complaining. And he knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived example of welcoming the company of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the importance of welcoming those who have been lost. Today's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup of three parables that all teach a similar message: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost coin, and rejoice over the return of the lost son. The theme can be summarized in the simple directive: rejoice don't reject. When someone who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause for gossip, sideways glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or say. Rather a genuine smile and word of welcome would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the community would be totally appropriate. Too often we become complacent about our Christian company. We get used to seeing the same people every Sunday and forget about the "lost" men and women who are outside the bounds of our comfort zone. Jesus gives us the image of an active shepherd who goes "after the lost one until he finds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully" until she finds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, embraced and kissed him," in spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they finally do come back home. The July through December Portion of the Mass Book for 2017 is Now Open.
