Pastor s Notes Every Holy Week and Easter I am at a loss for words. These mysteries are so gigantic that they cannot be reduced to any simple expression. The mystery of the Incarnation which made all of this possible is incomprehensible to the human mind. It is totally humiliating to see God being killed for my sins. Perhaps there is some comfort in realizing that He had died for everyone else s sins. At least I am not alone! I hope that all of you have taken advantage of the great Sacrament of Reconciliation during this Lent. Yesterday, we extended our hours for that purpose and today we will continue to hear confessions a half hour before each Sunday Mass. I also hope that all of you are reading the Catholic Catechism along with the Bible so that you can enrich your faith and gain some understanding of the mysteries of our faith. I look forward to Holy Week, especially to the live Stations of the Cross which will be at noon on Good Friday. The school children seem to make it into a masterpiece by giving us a deeper insight into Our Lord s love for each and everyone of us. I am very happy that they are putting it on for us again this year, and I hope you will take advantage of making this journey with Christ, again. Although the church was not packed last year, all who did venture out were so moved by it. In many ways the value of a Catholic education really shines and makes our parish s sacrifice in sustaining our school worthwhile. I also hope it will be an incentive for us to support Catholic education not only here, but also in the Catholic institutions that made us who we are today. I want to give a special thanks to Jersey Mike s for donating all their proceeds to St. Veronica s School on the Solemnity of the Annunciation. I am told the owner is an alumnus of SVS. May this Holy Week be a peaceful one for all of you. May it make your Catholic faith even stronger. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one, Surely it is not I?" During this dramatic scene at the Last Supper, we can picture Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, trying to play up his innocence as long as possible. He knew he had already betrayed Jesus, and if he joined in the "who, me?" ritual, he was just putting on appearances. But what about the others? The rest of the Twelve were deeply disturbed by the idea that they might betray Jesus. As we know, however, when push came to shove, Peter's fear of betraying Jesus was trumped by fear for his own life. "I do not know this man about whom you are talking," he said in order to protect himself. But notice Peter's reaction when he realized what he'd done: "He broke down and wept." How different was humble Peter's response from that of prideful Judas, who acted as if he hadn't done anything wrong: "Who, me?" Both men were unfaithful to the Lord, but only Peter immediately felt real sorrow, what we traditionally call contrition, for his sin.... The betrayers in today's Gospel readings are not just these two men. We also follow the crowd who hailed Jesus one day with "hosannas!" and a week later nailed him with their angry "crucify him!" How quickly our faith can turn fickle. For some of us, it may be easy to condemn the crowd and Judas and Peter, thinking that we would never do such a thing: "Who, me?" But today, let us resolve not to be so proud as to think we are perfect disciples. Let us have the humility of Peter who wept over his imperfections and, ultimately, repented of his sins. Only when we acknowledge that we need God's help will we be able to hail him and praise him as he truly deserves.
