2 Executive Minister Avilesbernal Meets with Representatives of Local Burma Churches by Rev. Dr. Paul Aita On September 8, 2018, Rev. Doug Avilesbernal met with representatives of three of the churches in the Evergreen Association that were started by refugees from Burma (also known as Myanmar). They discussed special arrangements being made for streaming sessions of Evergreen s Annual Meeting from Grace Baptist Church San Jose, CA, to Panther Lake Community Church in Kent with translation into Burmese. This arrangement will make it possible for the churches to take part in the Friday evening worship service, the Saturday afternoon business session, and the closing worship service on Saturday evening when Doug will be formally installed as Executive Minister. (The streaming is to be both ways, so that participants in San Jose will also be able to see those gathered in Kent, who have been asked to make a presentation of some kind at one of the services.) Those who participate in Kent will also have dinner together between the Saturday afternoon sessions and the evening worship. Doug recognized that the Karen, Chin, and Kachin churches represent a significant segment of Evergreen s membership. He asked them to share ways that they would like Evergreen to be of assistance to them in their ministries and indicated that he is also eager to have these churches share their talents and leadership in the life of the association. One of the outcomes of this discussion was the scheduling of a leadership training event for the Washington Chin Baptist Church, which Doug will conduct in early November. The end of summer was a busy one for all of the Burma churches in the Seattle area. Among other events, the Karen Community Church participated in an annual cultural Wrist-Typing event. The Washington Kachin Baptist Church held a number of home worship services with Rev. Tu Lawt, its visiting pastor from Burma. The Washington Chin Baptist Church celebrated its sixth anniversary. The Seattle Chin Baptist Church had a farewell service and dinner for its pastor, Rev. Dr. Hrang Hlei, who has since moved to Indianapolis. The Seattle Falam Baptist Church had a membership retreat with its Honorary Pastor, Rev. Dr. Biak Hlei Mang, from Chicago. Volume 17, Issue 10 Page 2

Good News from FACF Praise the Lord, after much prayer and waiting (exactly two years - September 20, September 20, 2018), TODAY we received the official approval of the building and public works permits for Filipino-American Christian Fellowship (FACF) building project from the City of Lynnwood. The scheduling of the work is now in the hands of our General Contractor. We expect the construction to be completed within 8 months. We'll keep you posted of any development. 6 Social Media Corner: How to Watch the Annual Meeting Worship on Facebook Mindi Welton-Mitchell Pastor, Queen Anne Baptist Church and Evergreen Social Media Specialist If you are unable to attend the Annual Meeting in San Jose this year, you can still watch the worship service on Friday, October 12 th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 13 th at 6:30 p.m. (both times in Pacific Time). Rev. Douglas Avilesbernal will be installed as our Executive Minister during the Saturday evening worship. Visit the Evergreen Facebook page evergreenabcusa. Make sure you have liked the page, and also click Following in the box to the left of the Like button (location of button may vary if you are using a mobile device). Clicking Following will make sure that you receive notifications of new posts and videos. Around the appointed time the video will start. Remember that Facebook Live is not perfect. Dear Loved Ones, Greeting. You [might have] read in our Nzunga & Kihomi journal how stressful the beginning of July was. Kihomi got caught in Darbonne, where she went for training and supervision. Since then, her blood pressure has been acting up up & down all day, and it was making her very uncomfortable. A friend who is a nurse came to visit to support and comfort us. She came with her glucometer. The next morning, she poked Kihomi to find out that Kihomi blood sugar level was 370. She was panicked. So Kihomi and I became panicked also. The nurse suggested starting the insulin right away. We were wondering now what to do. We decided to try the Haitian tea that helps lower blood sugar. The nurse left Kihomi with her glucometer to check her blood level twice a day. Every time, her blood sugar level was going up and up. One morning it hit 487. We were more panicked and we did not know who to call and what to do. You can imagine the multitude of ideas that were running in our heads. In our uncertain situation, God inspired us to go to the eye clinic and test it at our own lab. Amazingly, our lab result showed that Kihomi s blood sugar was normal. The same blood sample showed the result of over 404 in our friend s glucometer. Our nurse friend meant well. However, we wonder how many patients have been victims of bad equipment in our hospitals/clinics. We wonder what would happen if Kihomi had started taking insulin already? Thank you for praying daily and supporting us. After 3 doctors and two MRI s and many, many x-rays on my bad hip they all were in agreement; they do not know what is wrong. Now all I have to do is try to figure out what is going on with the bills and Medicare. You can imagine what it is like in a country that is way behind on medical technology and training. Who knows how much bad information is being delivered to patients. If you would like to help out with the medical equipment that Nzunga references in his journal remember you have to pay twice to get to to him. First to send it to Agape Flights in Venice FL and then $4 a pound for them to fly it to Haiti. We have problems with this every year and sometimes get a substantial bill at the end of the year due to unpaid transportation costs.
