Bench St. Galena, IL SUMMER WORSHIP 10:00 a.m. June Our Church in Mission We can be proud of our church this spring, with so much commitment and teamwork going into our efforts to catch up on our apportionment mission giving to our Conference! And this is in addition to our other mission projects in the community and beyond. At our recent Mission/Outreach meeting we discussed where to send our Change for the Better for the third quarter of the year. Although it may no longer be on the front page of the newspapers (or i-pads), Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded. It devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on November 8, Just six months ago Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc in that nation of many islands, killing at least 6,300 people and displacing more than four million residents. Tens of thousands of people are still waiting to be re-housed - an issue which was highlighted last week, when a fire in a "tent city" killed a woman and all six of her children. We are blessed to be a part of the solution through our gifts to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), so start saving up those coins for July, August and September. I thank God for your partnership in the Gospel.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED IN SO MANY WAYS! Our church will also be serving the Auction lunch for the Jim & Mary Jane Vincent Estate on Saturday, June 14, as we reach to pay a larger portion of our past due Apportionments. If you would have any creative suggestions for raising money to help pay our past due Mission/Apportionments, please contact the church office. Thank you for your support! Why We Pay Apportionments? Apportioned funds enable United Methodists to do together what no church, district, or annual conference could do alone. By paying our apportionments in full, we are taking part in many different ministries all around the world that we could not do on our own. Apportionments support outreach programs, our bishops, seminary and college students, and much, much more. Some Common Questions: What is an apportionment? Plain and simply an apportionment is the amount each local church pays its annual conference to support international, national, and regional missions. Why don t we just do it ourselves? Whereas it may be tempting to think that we can accomplish the same goals if we just go it alone, we would never be able to spread the gospel or the love of Christ as far and to as many people as we do when we are connected. By uniting our efforts, each dollar spent goes further, reaches more people, and does more good. What does it mean to be part of the Connection? The Connection is an idea or principle United Methodists hold. Basically, by being in the Connection we are recognizing that our loyalty to God s kingdom is bigger and goes much further than our local concerns. And we recognize that others in the Methodist faith are connected to us, whether they are down the street, or on the other side of the globe. What is connectional giving? This is simply another way of talking about apportionments. It is the amount each church is asked to pay in order to support the workings of the larger church as a whole. We call it connectional because we are aware that other churches are also giving to the same causes so that we can work together to make tremendous things happen. Lunch at Vincent Auction Saturday, June 14 th!!! Our church will be serving lunch at the Vincent auction at the Galena Convention Center on Saturday, June 14. Volunteers are still needed to set up, serve, bring cookies, etc. Please contact Ginny Carroll if you can help ( ). 3 Mission-Outreach/Change for the Better As we look back at the success of Change for the Better in these past seven years, we realize how grateful we are to Mel Young for believing in us enough to give us the initial $500 that started us off. When the first quarter didn't produce as much as we had hoped (as little as $139.60) we were able to add from our initial start-up funds. And, thanks to the generosity of all of you, the quarterly total has continued to grow, making it possible for us to give God's Littlest Angels in Haiti $ in our past quarter. For our current quarter, which wraps up in June, our coins benefit Hospice of Dubuque. On Sunday, July 22, Chaplain Penny Thomsen will bring us the morning sermon and receive our Change for the Better for Hospice. Plan to be here for her inspirational message. Since June of 2007 we have been able to give a total of $6, to various worthwhile projects. It's amazing how that loose change can add up! We will always miss Mel and be grateful for his generosity. --Charlene Price Did you know that all the ladies of the church are considered members of UMW?! And you are all invited to the annual Rockford District UMW Salad Supper at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18 at the Cedarville UMC. There will be a beautiful array of salads and also entertainment provided by Family Hayag from Lanark UMC. See Sarah Newton for salad needs and carpool information ( ). What a great way to renew acquaintances and meet new UMW sisters! Taize Continues Taize Candlelight Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 309 Hill St., on Tuesday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. We are thankful for the leadership of Janet Post and send our blessings to her and Jim as they relocate in Colorado. It was the consensus of the worshipers at May s service to continue meeting at Grace, and we thank the Rev. Dr. Gloria Hopewell for her leadership. Now is a good time to take a look and decide where you would like your family s brick to be. A little later this summer, when the garden is complete, we will have a dedication ceremony. United Churches Vacation Bible School VBS for 2014 will be Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 11, 8:30am- 4:30pm at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center will be leading this traveling day camp. Our church will need to provide snacks and lunch for one day of the camp.

6 Concerns Laverne Muehleip who suffered a heart attack but is back home, Gayle Monahan's daughter-in-law Celia who is now on dialysis, Sophie Wachter, Elisa Skeeter's granddaughter who was hospitalized in May, Betty Kabara, who is back in Galena, but needs to gain her strength back, Steve Ohms, will continue rehab at home after a farm accident, and all of those on the Prayer Concerns in our Sunday bulletin. Joys Wayne McDermott who was able to be a part of the recent Honors Flight to Washington, D.C., All of the middle and high school and college graduates in our church family, The success of the Rummage Sale and the enjoyment of the Women s' Banquet, The baptism of Clint and Jessica Bader's baby, Hunter, Olivia Schafer, student of Susan Lipnick, received an Achievement in Music Award for the piano, and Sami Anderson helped with the Haiti project done at the Galena Middle School.
