2 2016 LDS Fall Camporee Press Forward with a Steadfastness in Christ Friday Oct. 7 th and Saturday Oct. 8 th, 2016 Zion s Camp Patterson, CA Check in Friday night, 5 p.m. Check out Saturday afternoon, by 3:00 p.m. SPONSORED BY THE MERCED, TURLOCK, MODESTO, MODESTO NORTH, MANTECA, STOCKTON AND LODI STAKES OF ZION Overview The LDS Stakes within the Greater Yosemite Council will hold our annual LDS Fall Camporee on Friday October 7 th and Saturday October 8 th, 2016 at Zion s Camp near Patterson, CA. We are celebrating our 35 th annual LDS Camporee! This year s LDS mutual theme and our camporee theme is Press Forward with a Steadfastness in Christ. Our keynote speaker is Elder J. Scott Dorius. See Appendix C for biography. The objective of the camporee is to conduct a scouting camp that strengthens testimonies, builds character, teaches leadership skills and fosters fellowshipping. We want to see increased unity within the stakes and desire all attending, youth and adult, to feel the Spirit, enjoy the outdoors, and have fun together at the camporee. Attendees 11-Year-Old Scouts: This is one of the annual campouts that the 11-year-old Scouts can and should attend. Please make this Leader Guide available to the Ward Primary President and the 11-year-old Scout Leader. 11-year-old Scouts should be a separate Patrol by Ward. NOTICE: Pistols will be for 16 and older. Shotgun will be restricted to 14 and older. That means 16 and 14 (respectively) before the event!.22 Rifle will be for youth 12 and older before the event. Tomahawk, BB Gun and Archery will continue to be 11 years and older. Please make sure your units follow these BSA regulations. Eagle Scouts: We invite Eagle Scouts to attend the Camporee. Modesto North Stake will sponsor a breakfast for all Eagles, regardless of age, on Saturday morning held at Melchizedek Beach 7:15 a.m., see map for location. Scouters (Adults): Each Troop must provide a minimum of two adult leaders for 10 or less Scouts in attendance. Troops/Teams/Crews in excess of 10 Scouts should provide one additional adult leader for every increment of 5 boys (i.e. attendance of Scouts should have 3 adults supervising; Scouts should have 4 adults in attendance, etc.). Women Scouters: In the Scouting Handbook, instruction is given that women should not participate in Overnight camping that includes mixed groups of men and women, whether adults or youth, unless it is a family camp. We appreciate our women Scouters, and their understanding and support of that instruction. We invite them to join us for Friday evening campfire and Saturday activities, but no overnight stay. 3 Conduct All participants are expected to adhere to the Scout oath and law, and are expected to maintain the proper church standards throughout the entire encampment. There are 10 learning/discussion stations along the way. This trail was created as several eagle projects, and introduces a hiker to their destiny. This is a service project. We will work on a trail in Zion s camp that will eventually become a one mile, big-boy obstacle course for future LDS Camporee s. This course will be something you will be able to say to future generations: I built that! Pistols is an activity reserved for Venturers (16+). Shotgun shooting can be done by both Varsity and Venturers (14+). Learn how to groom, care for, and ride a horse. Already know how to ride a horse? Pass the riding test and go on a trail-ride. This is our work and our mission in this dispensation. You have been seen by generations of prophets since Adam. All Varsity and Venturing Scouts will be able to sit down learn about the gathering before actually going out to find the 12 tribes of Israel. Can you find them? The challenge is on! Additional Information: 1. Stakes who have small numbers of youth may wish to combine their Varsity or Venturing youth as a single unit. 2. When you arrive at Zion s Camp, all Varsity and Venturing Scouts will camp together at Camp Joseph. 3. Please have the Young Men bring shovels, rakes and gloves to participate in the trail blazing activity. Last Updated: 10 September 2016 Page 5

7 4. Stakes (or their youth) need to provide their own dinner and breakfast. 5. Pizza will be provided for lunch at Camp Joseph for those who finish all the morning activities. Ice cream will be provided at Nauvoo Grove for those who finish the afternoon activities and arrive at the Nauvoo Grove on time (2 p.m.) 6. No parking in the Camp Joseph area. You will get to carry your equipment and supplies the feet from the parking area to your campsite. Please plan accordingly. Thank you for your cheerful attitude with this request. Program Objectives: Invite our Young Men to come unto Christ. The process to accomplish this objective: 1. Bring the Varsity and Venturing youth together from the 7 stakes for the LDS Camporee. They can encourage and strengthen each other in building strong quorums, crews, and teams in each of the stakes. 2. We want great activities so the younger scouts look and say, Cool, I want to do that! I can t wait until I am a Varsity/Venturer Scout so I can do some of those things. 3. Provide activities that help Varsity/Venturer Scouts make decisions to become priesthood men who reach out to strengthen our church and community. 4. Begin a discussion with the year old boys about growing their quorums and scouting units. Why is this to their advantage? How do we need to change to accomplish this? 5. Build a desire within the year old boys to create a Varsity/Venturer program that is engaging and causes the younger boys to look up and say, I can t wait to be a Venturer. I can t wait until I am in the priest quorum. Ward/Unit Responsibilities: Verify all necessary documentation has been collected and is in your possession before you leave for the Camporee: Church Permission slips for every youth participant. Parent Medical Release slips for every youth participant. Completed Stake Activity Plan (see Appendix B). Organize your units into patrols. Bring Unit (Troop, Team, or Crew) Flag and American Flag. Maintain Church Standards within Patrols, Teams and Crews. Supervise Troop/Patrol Participants During the Assembly, Activities, and Service. Maintain Campsite Discipline. Maintain Campsite Quiet After 10:30 PM Friday Night, 11:30 in Camp Joseph. Possible Allergy Concern: In 2014, walnut shells were placed at the camp to help reduce the dust level. Please advise your youth and parents that if they have nut allergies, they may need to come prepared. As of this time, it is NOT anticipated that a new layer of shells will be laid down for this year. Equipment Damage & Loss: Camporee activities are closely monitored and well-organized to avoid any possible damage to personal and unit equipment. We put trust in the honesty of our Young Men and their leaders. Each Scout is responsible for the care and supervision of his own equipment. Each unit is responsible for the care and supervision of their equipment. The Camporee Committee does not assume any responsibility for damage or loss to any Scout, or unit equipment. Last Updated: 10 September 2016 Page 6

8 Electronic Devices: Personal electronic devices are not welcome at the camporee. Please leave all electronic devices (i.e. game, mp3 players, CD players, DVD players, laptops, etc.) at home. They can disrupt the individual and patrol participation in the programs and events and can pose a safety hazard. Additionally, we cannot secure these items from loss or damage at the Camporee. Patrol Responsibilities: Activities are organized by Patrols, Teams & Crews. Units should stay with their Stakes after the Friday evening program, with the exception of Teams and Crews who will camp together (all 7 Stakes) in Camp Joseph. It is the responsibility of each patrol, Team & Crew to insure its members attend assemblies and event activities. Each patrol will need a patrol name and flag. Patrols are responsible for supplying and cooking their own food. They are also responsible for all cooking equipment and clean-up. The only exceptions are the Cracker Barrel Friday evening, the Eagle breakfast Saturday morning and Lunch for 14+ Saturday afternoon. General Information: Again This Year: The flag grounds for the flag ceremonies and the Amphitheater for the Friday night Fireside are separate areas. For the Fireside, everyone will take a short hike to the Fireside area after retiring the colors at the flag grounds. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended as the terrain in the area varies from compact dirt to soft sand. Everyone should bring a flashlight. Grounds Organization: The Camporee will be held at Zion s Camp near Patterson, CA. Stakes will camp together in designated areas with the exception of year old Teams and Crews who will camp together (all 7 Stakes) at Camp Joseph. Vehicles will be able to drive to and drop off items at their campsite but we ask that you not park in the campsite. All vehicles are to be parked in the parking lot. We appreciate the opportunity to use this area for our Camporee, and ask that the boys observe the ideals of the scout Outdoors Code with respect to the surroundings. Campsites: Each Stake will have one designated area for their year old Scouts. All units must camp within the boundaries of their area. Use good judgment in setting up your campsites. Tent setup should be as low impact as possible. Please do not trench around tents. Keep your site organized and clean. It is recommended that each Troop/Team/Crew, supply each of their members with a garbage bag who will be responsible for site cleanup. Stake Leaders are to ensure each campsite has been policed and left better than when they arrived. We are Boy Scouts! Trash: There is no trash service to this campsite area; pack it in - pack it out. Water: Each unit please bring your own water for cooking and cleaning. Potable Water will not be provided. Fires: New this year, each camp site is supplied with a fire ring (courtesy of the Turlock Stake). Modest fires are permitted Friday evening and Saturday morning (if desired). Wood is provided at each campsite. Please use discretion and avoid large fires. Leaders are to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and cool to the touch by the time the Stake leaves the campsite on Saturday. Sanitation: "Porta-Potties" will be available on site. It is important that everyone respects these facilities so they can be returned in good repair. Swimming: There is plenty of water for swimming in the San Joaquin river BUT swimming is NOT, however, part of our program events. If Scouts and Scouters are in the water they must do so under their Last Updated: 10 September 2016 Page 7

11 Stake Leader Instructions / Reminders GENERAL Invite and encourage all of your units to participate; Scout Troops, Varsity Teams, Venturing Crews and 11-year old scout patrols in the Primary. Encourage each of your units and leaders to come prepared to meet the needs of their young men physically and spiritually. Prayerfully consider each young man. UNIFORMS We encourage all scouts to wear uniforms though the camporee, especially at Flag Ceremony. If you have a designated activity shirt, that would be appropriate for the activities on Saturday. Encourage all of your stake and ward leadership in attendance to wear their uniforms. This is a powerful example to our young men and leaders and is a frequently under-utilized scouting method. What we wear changes our attitudes and brings us together in unity. PATROL GAMES Each Stake is assigned to lead one patrol games. These assignments can be found on page 5. Each Stake needs to assign an activity leader for the patrol game. That stake will need to bring any necessary supplies or equipment for the activity. Keep these activities fun and feel free to have a discussion about the activity afterwards. MAJOR ACTIVITIES To help maintain a steady flow of participants at the higher demand activities (for example.22 rifle, archery, knife toss etc.), each stake will be assigned a time to participate in those activities. It will be up to each stake to decide who can participate during their allotted time and to monitor their time closely to ensure their scouts have a chance to participate. It s important to make sure that the appropriate age groups have ample time for the major activities, so make sure that the appropriate age groups are at the events specifically for those groups, e.g. Deacons at the rifle range, 11 year old Scouts at the BB gun range. SAFETY As you prepare for and participate in the Camporee please keep a keen eye to safety. Sometimes, both youth and leaders can require timely safety suggestions and reminders from others when something unsafe is taking place. We want to avoid injury or accident wherever we can and minimize potential risks and avoid tragedy. Make sure the BUDDY system is in place in your units. Swimming is NOT part of the Camporee program. No lifeguard is provided. The Modesto North stake will have a medical tent and medical staff if needed. ADULT LEADERSHIP Invite ALL adult YM leaders to attend YM Presidents, Advisors, Scout Leaders of all levels, Bishoprics, Stake YM Presidencies, Stake Presidencies, and High Counselor over YM. Make special invitations where needed. Some of our leaders don t consider themselves necessary at these events. We encourage them all to come and to spend time with youth and the leaders during the Camporee. Also, please encourage them to wear their uniforms. HEAD COUNT It is crucial that each Stake YM President ready the final head count for his stake by Saturday morning Counts should be taken as individuals arrive on Friday. Please use the form on Page 13 for your use and then transfer the final numbers to the form on Page 12 to be handed in to the Stockton Stake YM Presidency, during morning events. The camporee patches will be handed out based on these totals and each stake will be billed based on these totals. Last Updated: 10 September 2016 Page 10
