Sharma Lewis Elected Bishop in The United Methodist Church Rev. Sharma Lewis was elected bishop by the Southeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church at the 2016 Southeastern Jurisdiction Conference meeting at Lake Junaluska, NC on July Rev. Sharma Lewis is the first African-American woman elected bishop in the Southeastern Jurisdiction. She was the first of five new bishops elected by the 376 delegates, an equal number of United Methodist clergy and laity, from the nine states that form the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ). She was nominated by the North Georgia Conference and escorted to the stage by Bishop Mike Watson and Bishop Lindsey Davis after the announcement of her election. Rev. Lewis has been assigned as Bishop of the Virginia Conference. A consecration service for the five new bishops was held on Friday, July 15, at Lake Junaluska. IT IS TIME TO PACK FOOD AGAIN! Lewis is District Superintendent of the Atlanta- Decatur-Oxford District; has served as pastor of churches throughout Georgia and on a multi-staff, the cabinet, and numerous committees, boards and task forces; and is the recipient of several distinguished awards. A native of Statesboro and a life-long Methodist, she is a graduate of Mercer University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology; a graduate of the University of West Georgia with a Master of Science degree in Biology; and was a biologist in the academic and corporate sectors. After answering the call to ministry, she entered Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta where she earned the Master of Divinity with honors.
