1 Morrow Mirror A monthly newsletter brought to you by Morrow First United Methodist Church Pastor s Pen October 2018 Change is in the Air Can you see it? Fall, that is! Maybe you can t smell it, but I bet you can see it! I m excited about October, - - not just because of what God is doing among us, - - but because of what he is doing around us: College Football, Ladies Spiritual Retreat, Trunk-R-Treat, BBQ, Yard Sale, Halloween and Reformation Day on October 31, All Saints Sunday, and the leaves are beginning to change even as I write this. I look forward to seeing the beautiful changes God brings in the fall. Melanie and I love riding our Harley in the North Georgia Mountains during the fall season. Nature teaches us so much about God. In the fall, I learn that God brings change, and change can be beautiful. Yet, many people don t like change. Yes, change can be a bit scary because we are naturally fearful of the unknown. We know what life is like now, but if life changes, we don t know if we will like it, or if we will be able to survive it! Sometimes we like the way things are currently, yet, it s been said that for things to stay the same...they must change as well. I think there is truth in that statement. If you think about it, nothing ever stays the same. Over the past several years, my family has changed immensely. All of our children have changed. If they weren t changing, I would know something was wrong! They aren t who they were a few years ago, and I am amazed to see the changes God has brought in their lives, and to see that each year they become the person God created them to be. That has been my prayer for them their whole lives. While change can be frightening because we don t know what change will bring, change can also be beautiful. I m not writing about change for the sake of change. I m referring to purposeful change. When we allow God to bring changes into our lives, he brings beauty as well. Perhaps we shouldn t really be so afraid of change, but rather be intent on allowing God to bring change. As we continue to journey together, I believe God changes us. He continues to bring us to places of blessing and paths of love. God Bless, Love, Pastor Luis and Melanie

The pair ar e also volunteers at the historical home. (Special Photo) By Heather Middleton hmiddleton@news-daily.com Sep 10, 2018 JONESBORO Helen Adkins has always loved to read. As a child and into adulthood, books took her places around the globe and immersed her in fantasy worlds dreams are made of. She passed her love of reading on to her three boys. From the day they were born she read to them, taking them around the globe and sharing with them the fantasy worlds she had traveled as a child. Adkins said even though they were just babies, it planted a seed. When you read to children, it awakens their natural curiosity they have about the world and ignites their quest for learning, she said. She connects her childrens love of reading to their creativity now as adults. In addition to reading, Adkins loves history. For the last 15 years she s volunteered at the Stately Oaks Antebellum Home in Jonesboro. The Greek revival home was built in 1839 and serves as the centerpiece of the Historical Jonesboro community. Over the years, Adkins and her youngest son, Elliot, now 17, watched from Stately Oaks as parents and their young children walked to and from school at Suder Elementary School, down the road. We wanted to give the kids and their families something to read, Adkins said. The mother and son pooled their money to purchase supplies to build a Little Free Library. The library is typically a wooden box filled with books with the motto take a book, return a book. Little Free Libraries started with the nonprofit of the same name. Its goal is to inspire a love of reading, build community and sparking creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. We had seen Little Free Libraries and just decided that it would be a neat thing to put in front of Stately Oaks, a place where we both volunteer, Elliott said. Friend and carpenter Kerry Lancaster volunteered to build it while Jennifer Moore from Lady Fencer Inc. donated the cedar posts for the stand. Reading opens up a world to you, especially when you re young, Adkins said. We hope that visitors to Stately Oaks as well as local residents will enjoy using our Little Free Library.

10 Purposity comes from the core belief that humanity finds purpose through generosity. Everywhere around us we see people in need. We also see people who want to help others but don t know how. We connect those dots through the power of text messaging and social media. School systems and non-profits in local communities let us know needs in your area. We spread the word to individuals near them who are willing to help. They click a link, see the need, and make a difference for someone near them. It may be the family next door who lost their home in a fire or the child down the street you didn t know needed school supplies. It s easy. It s simple, and it takes just a few clicks to make a difference in someone s life. It s the fastest way to impact your community, one need at a time. Visit to start making a difference. Want to reach out to us directly? Send us a message at hello@purposity.com. Why Purposity? Purposity isn t just a tool. It s a vision. It s a vision of seeing the world as it should be. It s the quest to connect neighbors and communities around purpose. It s you helping those around you. As a group of social entrepreneurs, from the very beginning we wanted to make something that mattered. The solution we envisioned needed to be user friendly enough that anyone could navigate it, but sophisticated enough to solve complex social issues. To bring this to you, we had to ask ourselves, Is it possible to create a legacy that connects organizations and individuals in a meaningful way, unifying us all under the common quest for purpose? Turns out, the answer is yes. As the concept of Purposity scales nationally and worldwide, we see companies, nonprofits, churches, schools and individuals banding together, breaking down barriers, and uniting to help neighbors. We see the answers to complex social issues in each of you, our users and hope you ll join us on this journey to build a legacy. Blake Canterbury FOUNDER Henry County s Purposity was launched less than a year ago and has met 41 needs. Both Clayton and Fayette Counties have users but lack enough to launch. Clayton County needs 500 and Fayette County needs 200 users. By comparison Atlanta has 1994 users and has met 1511 needs.
