2 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 2 Important Messages Be Safe, Carry the Essentials This serves as a reminder that everyone using our fields should carry a fire extinguisher and First Aid kit in their own vehicle or trailer. Anything can happen at the field, and usually does when you re unprepared. Be Safe Be Prepared! Prado Field If you are the last person out at Prado Field, PLEASE make sure you lock the yellow gate behind you! N o r t o n F i e l d Some arriving fliers at the Norton have found the field cable unsecured. Please remember, if you re the last flier out at the field please make sure you put the cable across the runway and ensure it is padlocked on both ends. The Board of Directors wishes to thank you for the vote of confidence Okay, Christmas has come and gone, we had our Toys 4 Tots Fun Fly, a huge success to say the least. There were two hundred twenty (220) toys, and eight hundred sixty ($860.00) dollars donated. Thanks to Lonnie & Betty Morrison, Steve & Terri Parola for the delivery of toys and cash to the US Marines, Roy Barringer for cooking our food that kept us going, Cal Orr for keeping activities going, if I forgot anyone, please forgive me. I'm an old man, and "that" happens. Have you seen our Club Tee Shirts? They look great! We have sold quite a few so far, so get yours as soon as you can. At this time all sizes are available. Cost is only $15.00 U.S. dollars. We'll have them at the General Meeting. If you can t make it to a meeting, check with a Club Officer to find out how you can purchase one. BY THE WAY, the Board has voted in the issuance of Visa Cards as door prizes. I couldn't get a Bank to let me purchase them for January s meeting, so I took cash instead. All the members present voted that the club give out a cash prize for door prizes. Paul Smith and Steve Parola won the money for the "Show and Tell" program that was conducted all year long. The Show and Tell Program consists of bringing an RC Plane Model to the Club Meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, show it, tell us something about it, such as, how it flies, how its powered, etc., and your name goes into the pot. At the December club meeting, we take all the names, and draw the winning name. We give out two cash prizes, $350 for first, and $250 for second. Paul won first, Steve won second. Not too shabby, huh? I had not taken a plane in the past, but I took my Jerry Bates SBD Dauntless which I'm is in the build process right now. The AMA Expo was a huge success! The Club picked up, sixtyfive (65) new members! Yes, 65 new members, they joined at the AMA Expo, we took their picture, application, copy of their AMA Card and issued them a Club Members Card, along with a Gate key right then and there. We were not expecting to add that many at the show, we had figured that if we added 10 that would be a lot, so we were pleasantly surprised! 4 Page 4 Learn to Fly Free Have you taken advantage of the PVMAC Learn-to-Fly Program? PVMAC is giving free flying lessons to anyone interested. Lessons are at the Norton Field in San Bernardino or Prado Field in Chino. Both are excellent flying fields and will give you the chance to try out your flying skills. The PVMAC takes great pride in its ability to encourage new potential RC pilots of all ages to enjoy the hobby. With that in mind the PVMAC and its members invite you to learn how to FLY. The club will provide the training aircraft, fuel, radio and a knowledgeable experienced flight instructor at NO cost to you. You will fly on a Buddy Box which allows you to control the aircraft in the air, and if control is lost, the instructor will take it back, get it level and turn control back over to you. 5 Page 5 Prado Resurfacing & Restriping by Richard Smith Prado Airpark was closed Jan 16th (Fri) and Jan 17th (Sat) for recoating and stripping. Spectrum Stripping did a great job along with some things that weren't on the contract. Cost me lunch but more than worth it. They also gave me a 5 gallon can of slurry to use if we need it. Also want to thank the men that helped with placing the cement bumpers near the pit area. They weigh 165 lbs. each. We ordered 25 and they are all in place. Hopefully that will keep people from driving out on the blacktop. Thanks to LARRY, JOHN, SCOTT, AND HARRY. -Richard Smith Field maintenance Do you want a little excitement?... by Paul Smith Are you getting bored with flying the same airplane? Here is what to do. Find the ELEVON function on your transmitter and activate it. Then fly the plane. What you will find is that when you call for elevator you also get ailerons. The plane will roll one way for up elevator and the opposite way for down. Likewise when you command ailerons you also get elevator, up for left aileron and down for right. All of this makes for a really exciting flight and a very busy right thumb. Seriously, I had ACCIDENTALLY activated the elevon function when I recently flew my Extra 300S electric. Fortunately I didn t try any showtime tricks on takeoff and I was soon going nuts trying to trim the plane. I felt like I had forgotten how to fly. After a minute or so I gave up and made an uneventful landing. Ground check quickly revealed the strange control system action. The point here is that a THOROUGH control system check would have revealed the problem before I took off. I had done a preflight check and noted that each control surface moved in the correct direction but I didn t catch what the other surfaces were doing. My first New Years resolution for 2009 is to be a lot more observant when I do that preflight check. And if you do decide to try my suggestion at the top, please let me know. I want to watch. He also won the 50/50 cash prize at the meeting, which was $73.00 AND he also took home the biggest door prize, $ Richard Smith will putting up phone numbers for the local authorities, in case you see something out of the ordinary, suspi- cious or the like. Effective immediately the club has been ordered to leave the Cucamonga gate open while we are there, so the first guy in opens it, locks lock back in place, swings the gate closed, but don't lock it. Last person out has to lock gate. Our Next General Meeting will be February 10th 2009, we'll be giving away $ CASH! All you need to do is be a club member, sign in on the sign in sheet, and be lucky like Jose Brea. The reason you haven't received any s from me is that my PC crashed. 7 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 7 PO Box 2707 Chino, CA The Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of R/C model airplane flying. The club is composed of approximately 400 members and currently enjoys two flying fields. phil@goodwineglass.com We re on the web! The club has a field in Prado Park and another field at the old Norton AFB. The Prado field is approximately 800 feet long with enough pit area to support 30 fliers.
