2 SECRETARY S REPORT June 12, 2016; President: Dale Weinhold called the meeting to order at the Ellsworth Airport with 15 members and guests present. Guests included Galen Seehafer and Red Sigle. Secretary s Report: Jim Price made a motion to accept the minutes as printed in the newsletter. Milton Wehrman seconded the motion. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report: Jim Homolka reported a balance of $3, in our checking account. No checks were written from the account this month and Jim is not aware of any outstanding bills. There are only 1 or 2 members with unpaid dues. Jim pointed out that we also have money in two Federated accounts. The balance in one account is $5, and the other is $1, for a total of $7, There was some discussion about how the money was generated (sale of a donated aircraft being one item). It was discussed about how we should do something with the money and President Weinhold encouraged members to come to the meeting with ideas for the group to consider. The money is there to use, we just need ideas of how to spend it in a way that helps the club achieve our goals. Anne Piper made a motion to accept the Treasurer s report as presented. Larry Adamek seconded. Motion carried. Young Eagles Report: Larry Farmer reported that we still have a $180 credit from last year from EAA. Larry said that in the past we typically have just turned it back to national and that unless somebody had a suggestion of a way to use it, that we do the same this year. After discussion, Larry Adamek made a motion to return the $180 credit to national. Jim Price seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Larry thanked those who have completed the child protection forms and reminded us that we need more pilots to complete the forms so that we have adequate number of pilots available for our Young Eagle event. Reminded us that the process includes completing the on-line Youth Protection Course, the EAA Criminal History Background check, and attesting to having the required insurance coverage. Tech Counselor s Report: Jim Homolka mentioned that Dale and others have been having trouble with valves sticking on the engine of their aircraft. Jim did some research and provided info on why valves stick on Continental engines. Jim suggested for older aircraft that do not get flown consistently we should consider oil changes at 25 hours instead of 50 hours. Jim also said that on hot days, rapid cooling of engines contributes to the issue as does corrosion. Interesting discussion followed on the use of additives such as Marvel Mystery Oil and others. (The recent issue of Flying magazine has an interesting article on extending the life of your engine.) Flight Advisor Report: Keith Houghton congratulated Milton Wehrman on obtaining his private pilot certificate on Monday, June 6 th! (Way to go Milton!) Jim Price reminded us that the new Airman Certification Standards (ACS) go into effect June 15 th. The ACS has more definitive requirements in the check ride and has less flexibility for the Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). There will be a webinar on the ACS on June 25 th for anybody interested. See Jim after the meeting for details if you want to participate in the webinar. Jim also asked if we noted that there had been 16 aircraft lost in the last 3 weekends. Great concern and we all should take note! This is unacceptable and we all need to make certain we are well prepared for flight and current. Reminded us that being legal can be significantly different than being proficient. We all must be proficient and safe! Other Old Business: None New Business: Dale reminded us that our fly-in is scheduled for August 6 th. (First Saturday in August) Mark your calendars! Dale will send flyers and use the EAA blast . Jim Price suggested using the KAA . Dale has picked up pancake mix. The City of Ellsworth will sponsor the event again at the $150 to $200 range. Dale reminded us that this is the 25 th year of our fly-in. Oshkosh is coming up and there are still chapter camping sites available. Dale let us know that courtesy cars have recently been stolen from Iowa airports. Our key is kept in a locked box with code that pilots know so hopefully that helps reduce inappropriate use by others. Adjourn: Larry Adamek made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Anne Piper seconded. Motion carried. Mike (Dawn) Olson provided treats. Larry Gourley provided an excellent presentation on his recent journey to Alaska. He had video footage of the journey and his son had edited the video into a great documentary. This was an incredible adventure and a great presentation. (Larry you will have to show us how you have the cameras mounted on your aircraft sometime. Do you ever mount any cameras external?) Next Meeting: July 10, 2016, 2:30 pm. Mike Olson, Secretary

3 FROM YOUR PRESIDENT: Well, a month has gone by with no flying by me. However, judging by the fuel sales at 9K7, some people have been flying in-spite of the heat. I, however, am still grounded. The cylinder for the old Hawk is still not back from repair. However, I did have an update today, and it should be on its way very soon, maybe even today. I was told by the repair station that when the cylinder was topped, the clearance in the valve guide was not correct, too tight, resulting in a stuck valve in only 200 hours. So they were reaming the guide, installing a new valve, and with any luck it will be on its way back. Now what I need is an A&P to come to Ellsworth and install it. The one that had agreed to do it, is probably in the harvest field, so we will see how that goes. A special thanks again to member Larry Gourley for the great program at the last meeting. Some really beautiful video of his trip to Alaska, and great info also. I also want to thank Larry for bailing me out on a Young Eagles promise I had made several months ago. I had made a promise to fly an individual s grandkids when they came to Ellsworth for his Grandparents camp. However, since I did not have an airplane flying that wasn't possible. Larry stepped up and came over to Ellsworth and took 4 very happy and excited Young Eagles along with their Grandmother on a trip over Wilson Lake. Thanks Larry! Also a special thanks to Patti Kubick who came in and took pictures and printed certificates for the kids. Thanks Patti! Our annual fly in is slowly moving closer. I have been working on getting the word out, updating our snail mail as well as our list, and posting it on various web sites. This year EAA will be helping by sending out an blast to members in our area. At our July meeting we will be setting up committees, hopefully those that have helped in the past will step up, as well as others. If you want a fun day of airplanes plan on attending, and we always need helpers, and gracious hosts, if you do no more than visit with visiting pilots that helps. Pilots always comment on our fly in and its grass roots atmosphere. Plan to be there. For those of you with Oshkosh plans, it won't be long. I thought I ordered a NOTAM, but since I haven't received it, maybe I didn't. I don't think I am going, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared just in case, plus I like reading the NOTAM's. By the way, CONGRATULATIONS are in order to our VP Milton. After what I understand has been a 25year project Milton is now a Licensed Private pilot. Good Job Milton. Well, that's about it for this month, happy flying and I hope to see you on July 10 th.
