Come on out to the field at 10:00 am on January 1st for Frozen Fingers Bring an aircraft to fly and try to be the First in Flight for Last year John Turner took the honors and the trophy. Who will it be this year? FROM THE EDITOR Doug Swanson newsletter@foxvalleyaero.com Happy Holidays to all! Welcome to the December Flypaper. Being the gift-giving season, I have included as many new products in this issue as space allowed. Whether you re shopping for someone else or yourself, there are all kinds of new and exciting products to consider (or dream about). As you shop for hobby products, remember to support your local hobby shops has been a year of mixed emotions for me. It started off with great news regarding the AMA 75th Anniversary newsletter contest, which was entered in late The results came out in January, and I was informed that we came away with top honors wow. In June the club was hit with some terrible news. I remember the call from Dan Rocha early one morning to inform me that Dan Knippen had passed after a brief battle with lung cancer. Those of us in the IMAC community were determined to carry on and continue the contest Dan had run for the past 18 years. me with the Christmas party. Not only did I come away with a new airplane, I was also the proud recipient of the Top Gun award. Thanks to those existing Top Gunners who bestowed such an honor on me. In this issue: Dale Gathman has shared the photos he snapped at the Christmas party. See them on page 6. He has also provided several Shots From the Field. See them on page 11. Thanks, Dale! Armin Weber has shared the experience of a full scale T-6 ride. See his photos and story on page 10. I ll see you at the January meeting; unfortunately, I can t make it out to Frozen Fingers. I will continue to be active with many events throughout the upcoming year, especially with the SWAP and Festival of Flight. My thanks go to the current B.O.D. s and membership who have supported my role within the club. The club membership continues to grow and our facility is one of the best within the Midwest! Be sure to mark your calendar for the annual SWAP being set up at the Kane County Fairgrounds on February 23rd. Both Joe Pedone and I have been working with various vendors and fellow RC enthusiasts to make this another successful event for the club. A suggestion was brought up this fall to possibly look at having a SWAP/Tailgate Event at the flying field vs. the standard SWAP. It may reduce expenses and we can have people set up at the site and charge a nominal fee a different approach, but a good idea. Finally, our annual tradition continues on January 1st with the First in Flight competition. Bring your plane and coffee as we watch fellow members fight the cold and wind to claim the trophy in Again, thank you to the board and membership for allowing me to serve as your V.P. 10 D e c e m b e r w w w. f o x v a l l e y a e r o. c o m Armin Weber recently went for a ride in a T-6 Texan. Below is a brief account of his experience, along with a few photos from the day. The flight was with Gauntlet Warbirds, based at Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove [ They offer rides and training in several airplanes including the T-6 Texan, L-39, Extra 300, Yak-52, and Decathlon. Being a big warbird fan, I was looking forward to a ride in the T-6 Texan. The experience begins with a briefing that describes the airplane, and flight from takeoff to landing, plus some very brief instructions on how to use the parachute. Prior to being buckled into the rear seat, the pilot said if we need to jump out for any reason, jump toward the trailing edge of the wing. That way you won t be cut in half by the stabilizer after leaving the plane. Good info, I thought to myself. 10 The engine was started and we were off. Shortly after takeoff, I was given control of the airplane and we flew to our practice area. We spent the remainder of the flight doing loops, barrel rolls, 4- and 8-point rolls, and Cuban 8's. All to soon, we were headed back to the airport where we did a pass over the runway, followed by a breaking turn and landing. It was an awesome experience, and I d definitely do it again. -Armin

12 D e c e m b e r w w w. f o x v a l l e y a e r o. c o m photos by Doug Swanson 12 SECRETARY S REPORT Tony Sokol secretary@foxvalleyaero.com President Tom Spriet called the meeting to order at 7:37pm. Secretary Tony Sokol asked for any additions or corrections to the S e p t e m b e r minutes. Tom informed the members that Tony would be stepping down from the Secretary s position for the coming year. Fox Valley Aero Club General Meeting Minutes November 8, Township Hall Tony Sokol Tony then asked for approval of the report and received a thank you hand of applause in return. That was taken as an approval of the minutes. (Thank you.) Treasurer Paul Jacobs reported that money is starting to come in for the Christmas party and 2013 dues. He did mention that we will be reminded at least weekly from now until the party deadline to get our reservations in. Hearing no questions from the members the report was approved. Swap Meet Cochairman Joe Pedone reported that people and vendors are signing up for tables. The word is getting out and our flyer will be in the December and January issues of Model Aviation. We plan to start the foamy flying at 1:00 o clock as we did last year, ending at 3:00. Joe Pedone G o v e r n m e n t Relations Chairman Alvin Cole informed us that the club will be presenting a Christmas basket to the 911 Center as well as the Agricultural Center to the North of the field. There is also a plan in the works to present a similar gift to the neighbors to the West. Alvin also reminded us of the Toys Alvin Cole for Tots effort at the Christmas party. Unwrapped toys, gift cards, etc. will be appreciated. Joe Pedone informed the members that we will be having the party after the party at Rookies again this year on December 13th. continued on next page
13 w w w. f o x v a l l e y a e r o. c o m D e c e m b e r Greg Bohler continued from previous page Field Chairman Greg Bohler had a good turnout to button up the field for the winter. Power to the left 3 bays of the Juice Bar will be left operational during the winter to see how well it survives. Greg also mentioned that we do not plow the road or parking area during the winter however if anyone has a plow and is so inclined their efforts will be appreciated. One important note is that the runways are NOT to be plowed. Plowing caused wind rows which have a tendency to draw airplanes like a magnet. Show and Tell Brian Mocny and Dan Vancura from HobbyTown brought along a couple of micro helicopters including the new 4-rotor offering from Heli Max which sells for $99 complete with radio. He also displayed the new Horizon Nano which incorporates AS3X stabilization technology. Newsletter Editor Doug Swanson thanked everyone for their contributions and encouraged us to keep submitting articles, building tips, etc.. Doug also noted that the special election edition will be coming out soon and any candidates wanting to submit a Bio need to have it in ASAP. President Tom Spriet opened the floor for any additional nominations noting that we are in need of a Secretary and Field Chairman for the upcoming year. The following nominations were made and accepted: Dan Vancura and Brian Mocny Secretary: Dale Gathman Board Member at large: Tony Sokol Tom Siwek John Griffith Following a recap of the various positions and nominees, President Tom Spriet closed the nominations. Heli-Max 1SQ Quadcopter 2.4GHz RTF (HMXE0834) Dale Gathman displayed more of his now famous field shots to the delight of all in attendance. Having no further business President Tom Spriet adjourned the meeting at 8:14pm. Respectfully submitted Tony Sokol Secretary FVAC Dale Gathman 13
