And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, by the hand of Moses your servant you led your people out of slavery, and made them free at last: Grant that your Church, following the example of your prophet Martin Luther King, may resist oppression in the name of your love, and may secure for all your children the blessed liberty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 1st Lesson Please be seated 1 Samuel 3:1-10(11-20) Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, 1
for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. [Then the Lord said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever. Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. He said, Here I am. Eli said, What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you. So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him. As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 139:1-5, Read responsively by verse; the congregation is invited to read the verses in bold. Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. Refrain You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. 2
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I will thank you because I am marvelously made; your works are wonderful, and I know it well. Refrain My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. Refrain 2nd Lesson James 2: 1-8 My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, Have a seat here, please, while to the one who is poor you say, Stand there, or, Sit at my feet, have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel please stand John 1:43-51 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. 3
Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Prelude: Wade in the Water Wade in the water, wade in the water children. God s gonna trouble the water! See that host all dressed in white, God s gonna trouble the water, The leader looks like the Israelite, God s gonna trouble the water. See that band all dressed in red, God s gonna trouble the water. Looks like the band that Moses led, God s gonna trouble the water. Offertory Anthem: Selma 1965: Let My People Go Tell ol Pharaoh, tell ol Pharaoh to let my people go. Go, down! When Israel was in Egypt s land, let my people go. Oppresses so hard they could not stand, let my people go. Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt s land. Tell ol Pharaoh to let my people go. Thus spoke the Lord, bold Moses said: Let my people go. If not, I ll smite your first-born dead. Let my people go. Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt s land. Tell ol Pharoah to let my people go. Communion Anthem: Witness for My Lord Witness for my Lord! The Lord has been so good to me, He brought me through the storm and gave me victory. I ll testify His goodness, and I ll praise Him ev ryday. 4 arr. Rollo Dilworth arr. Rollo Dilworth arr. Rollo Dilworth
For I want to tell the whole world of His everlasting love! I want to be a witness for my Lord! Amazing grace, how sweet the sound Twas grace that saved a wretch, a wand ring wretch like me. I once was blind and aimless, but with new eyes I can see And I owe it all to the Lord who has been so good I want to be a witness for my Lord! Postlude: Justice arr. Rollo Dilworth Let justice roll, lift your voice and sing! Let justice roll, let freedom ring! Enthroned upon the mighty truth within the confines of the laws, True Justice seeth not the man, but only hears his cause. Let justice roll, lift your voice and sing! Let justice roll, let freedom ring! Unconscious of his creed or race, she cannot see but only weighs. For Justice with unbandaged eyes would be oppression is disguise. Let justice roll, lift your voice and sing! Let justice roll, let freedom ring! ABOUT TODAY S MUSIC ROLLO DILWORTH (b. 1970) A member of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, Overbrook, Pennsylvania, Dilworth is a highly sought-after choral music clinician, and an oft-published composer of choral music, emphasizing spirituals and gospel-inspired pieces. His works often couple gospel and jazz-style harmonies, the results of which are exciting and refreshing works. And like many composers, his works often have a message for both performer and listener alike. At first glance, the lyrics of Wade in the Water encourage Christians to wade in the waters of baptism, which God would trouble to release the bonds of sin. However, runaway slaves would listen to the coded language, which referenced Moses and the Israelites escape from Egypt, which reinforced the idea that when escaping bondage, the water represented possible freedom for the slaves, and an escape by water greatly increased their chances of evading search dogs. Selma 1965: Let My People go was written in commemoration of the historic Selma to Montgomery March of The spiritual Let My People Go emerged as a freedom song during the time of slavery and during the American civil rights movement, the significance ever-changing as the sense of bondage shifts in society. 5
Many composers of African-American gospel music like to use textural phrases from existing works, especially texts from other spirituals and hymns, as a basis for new works. Witness for My Lord does exactly that, taking phrases from Witness for My Lord and Amazing Grace, and paraphrasing them in this original work, a reminder that we need to be witnesses. Dilworth pairs original lyrics with words from the poem Justice by Paul Laurence Dunbar in his composition Justice. This piece cries for justice, freedom, and peace for all in our nation.
