August 28, 2016: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost at 10:30am Welcome! Wherever you are on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at Holy Communion. Prelude: Prelude from Suite in E Major Edward Titcomb Gathering Song Please stand. Goodness Is Stronger Than Evil Opening Hymn: Please stand. St. Denio Hymnal 423 Opening Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever.

The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. 1st Lesson Jeremiah 2:4-13 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, "Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?" I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, "Where is the Lord?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children's children. Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 81:1, read responsively, by verse Sing with joy to God our strength * and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, * "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." And yet my people did not hear my voice, * and Israel would not obey me. 2

So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their hearts, * to follow their own devices. Oh, that my people would listen to me! * that Israel would walk in my ways! I should soon subdue their enemies * and turn my hand against their foes. Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him, * and their punishment would last for ever. But Israel would I feed with the finest wheat * and satisfy him with honey from the rock. 2nd Lesson Hebrews 13:1-8, Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Please stand. Luke 14:1, 7-14 The congregation is invited to sing the Alleluia twice to the tune of Goodness Is Strong Than Evil (p. 1) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest 3

place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is invited to sing the Alleluia twice to the tune of Goodness Is Strong Than Evil. The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the Preacher. The Rev. Marc Smith The Nicene Creed Please stand. Enriching Our Worship We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 4

The Prayers of the People Book of Common Prayer, p.387 Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. In the Diocese of Missouri we pray for Rockwell House Episcopal Campus Ministry. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you. That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Michael, our presiding bishop, George Wayne our bishop and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for Barack, our president; the members of Congress; the Supreme Court; Jay, our governor; and for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world. That there may be justice and peace on the earth. We give you thanks for all the blessings of this life, especially those celebrating a birthday this week: Diane Willingham and Caye Sarber. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. We pray for all who are deployed to the Middle East, especially Corrine Lamberson; and for those on our prayer list. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. 5

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome and Announcements Please be seated. Offertory Anthem: The Valley Jane Siberry I live in the hills, you live in the valleys And all that you know are these blackbirds You rise every morning, wondering what in the world will the world bring today? Will it bring you joy or will it take it away? And every step you take is guided by the love of the light on the land and the blackbird's cry You will walk in good company The valley is dark, the burgeoning holding The stillness obscured by their judging You walk through the shadows, uncertain and surely hurting, Deserted by the blackbirds and the staccato of the staff And though you trust the light towards which you wend your way, Sometimes it feels all that you wanted has been taken away You will walk in good company I love the best in you, you love the best in me Though it's not always easy Lovely, lovely We will walk in good company The Shepherd upright and flowing You see Offertory Hymn: Please stand Hymn to Joy Hymnal 376 6

Eucharistic Prayer 1 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing: Enriching Our Worship 7

The presider gives thanks to God for Christ s redeeming work and remembers Jesus last supper with his disciples. Then the presider invites the people to respond: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The presider then concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread, the wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God s reign. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. The congregation sings the Great AMEN two times to the tune of Goodness Is Stronger Than Evil. The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread God of promise, you have prepared a banquet for us. Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb. Administration of the Sacrament You are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Gluten Free wafers are available on request, from the minister. On the left (West) side of the altar rail, the chalice is filled with grape juice, as a sign of welcome for those who choose not to consume wine. On the right (East) side of the altar rail, the chalice is traditional red wine. Please feel free to cross the aisle for your preferred chalice. Additional instructions about how to receive Eucharist or a blessing are available on the red cards hanging on the ends of the pew racks. 8
