Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, `God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax 3

4 collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, `God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' Beth Scriven The Nicene Creed Please stand. Enriching Our Worship We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 7 Eucharistic Prayer 3 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Enriching Our Worship The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing: 7

8 The presider gives thanks to God for Christ s redeeming work, and remembers Jesus last supper with his disciples. The people are invited to respond to the words: we acclaim you, O Christ: Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! The presider concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread, the wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God s reign. We worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. On the left (West) side of the altar rail, the chalice is filled with grape juice, as a sign of welcome for those who choose not to consume wine. On the right (East) side of the altar rail, the chalice is traditional red wine. Please feel free to cross the aisle for your preferred chalice. Dia De Los Muertos: Altar of Remembrance In Latin America, the dead are remembered and celebrated on Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) November 2, All Soul s Day, with colorful, joyous altars filled with mementos and photos of the beloved to honor and remember those who have died. Over the next two weeks at Holy Communion, we will be decorating the chapel altar as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of All Saints and Dia De Los Muertos. Bring a photo or other memento of a loved one who has died and place it on the altar. You are also welcome to light a candle in this special place. and take a few minutes to rest and remember all those who have graced our lives for such a short time. We ll bless the ofrenda on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 6 during the services.
