1 Holy Eucharist The Second Sunday after the Epiphany Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday January 20, 2019 at 10:30 am St Paul s Church in Englewood an Episcopal Parish in the Diocese of Newark and the Anglican Communion Welcome to St. Paul s We are glad you are here, and we invite you to enter fully into worship today, and to receive Communion or a blessing. We invite you to ask questions, explore, and to make yourself known to those around you. Please pick up a newsletter and any other information about the parish located at the entrances to the church. Join us for coffee hour and fellowship in the Parish Hall following the service. Help us make this a place where God s grace is freely shared by all. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Reverend Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. As the son and grandson of Baptist preachers, he was steeped in the Black Church tradition. To this heritage he added a thorough academic preparation, earning the degrees of B.A., B.D., and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Boston University. King founded the Southern Christian ship Conference to spearhead non-violent mass demonstrations against racism. Many confrontations followed, most notably in Birmingham and Selma, Alabama and in Chicago. His campaigns were instrumental to the passage of the Civil Rights acts of 1964, 1965 and King then turned his attention to economic empowerment of the poor and opposition to the Vietnam War, contending that racism, poverty and militarism were interrelated. After preaching at Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968, King went to Memphis in support of sanitation workers in their struggle for better wages. There, he proclaimed that he had been to the mountain-top and had seen the Promised Land, and that he knew that he and his people would be free at last. On the following day, April 4, he was cut down by an assassin s bullet. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in His feast day was added to the calendar of saints in the Episcopal Church thereafter. adapted from Lesser Feasts and Fasts Parish Mission Statement The mission of St. Paul s Episcopal Church is to love God and our neighbor, continuing Christ s life in the world. With God s help, and embracing our diversity, we will proclaim the Gospel, seek the truth, and strive for peace and social justice.

Glory to you, Lord Christ. Deacon On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. Silence is kept for a space Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon 3 4 After the Sermon, we turn to the Book of Common Prayer Nicene Creed BCP, page 358 Prayers of the A New Zealand Prayer Book Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear when we pray in the name of your Son. Therefore in confidence and trust we pray for the Church: Father, enliven the Church for its mission. That we may be salt of the earth and light to the world. Breathe fresh life into your people. Give us power to reveal Christ in word and action. We pray for the world: Creator of all, lead us and every people into ways of justice and peace. That we may respect one another in freedom and truth. Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it. Teach us to care creatively for its resources. We pray for the nation and the world: God of truth, inspire with your wisdom those whose decisions affect the lives of others. That all may act with integrity and courage. Give grace to all whose lives are linked with ours. May we serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. We give thanks for the blessings of this life: God of hope, comfort and restore all who suffer in body, mind or spirit. May they know the power of your healing love. Make us willing agents of your compassion. Strengthen us as we share in making people whole. We remember the sick and the suffering, and those in need:
4 We remember with thanksgiving those who have died in the faith of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone. Father, into your hands we commend them. Give comfort to those who mourn. Bring them peace in their time of loss. We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory. May their example inspire and encourage us. We pray for ourselves and our ministries: Lord, you have called us to serve you. ALL Grant that we may walk in your presence: your love in our hearts, your truth in our minds, your strength in our wills; until, at the end of our journey, we know the joy of our homecoming and the welcome of your embrace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
